Why can't I get unemployment benefits approved by Washington ESD?
I've been trying to get unemployment for over a month now and Washington ESD keeps denying my claim. I worked at a retail store for 8 months before getting laid off due to budget cuts. They said I don't have enough work history but I thought 8 months was enough? I'm really confused about the requirements and don't understand why I keep getting rejected. Has anyone else had this problem with not qualifying?

You need to have worked in at least two quarters and earned a minimum amount during your base period. For Washington ESD, you need at least $3,850 in your highest quarter and total wages of at least 1.5 times your high quarter wages. If you only worked 8 months, depending on when you started, you might not meet the base period requirements.

•What's a base period? Nobody ever explained this to me when I filed.

•The base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim. So if you filed in January 2025, your base period would be January-December 2024.

I had the same issue! Turns out I needed to request an alternate base period because my recent work wasn't included in the regular base period calculation. You should call Washington ESD and ask about this option.

•How do you even get through to them? I've been calling for weeks and either get busy signals or hung up on after waiting forever.

•It's honestly a nightmare trying to reach them. The phone system is completely overwhelmed.

I found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I was stuck in the same situation. They handle the calling process and get you connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They got me through in about 30 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own.

•Might be worth trying at this point. I'm getting desperate here.

Before you do anything else, check your wage history in your Washington ESD account. Go to the 'Payment History' section and look at your quarterly wages. If they're missing wages from recent employers, you'll need to contact those employers to verify they reported your wages correctly to Washington ESD.

•I just checked and it looks like my last employer isn't showing up at all in the system. Is that why I'm getting denied?

•That's definitely a problem. Your employer has to report wages to Washington ESD quarterly. If they didn't report or reported late, it won't count toward your eligibility.

ugh this happened to me too... worked for almost a year but still got denied because of some stupid technicality about when I started working vs when the quarters ended. the whole system is broken

•It's not broken, it's just complicated. The quarterly system exists for a reason - to ensure people have sustained work history.

•whatever, still doesn't help when you're broke and need benefits

Update: I talked to my old manager and they said HR never filed the wage reports with Washington ESD because they were "transitioning systems" when I got laid off. What do I do now?

•Your employer needs to file corrected wage reports immediately. Contact Washington ESD's employer services division and explain the situation. They can help ensure the wages get properly reported.

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr to talk to someone at Washington ESD about my wage issues. They helped me understand what documentation I needed from my employer.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for 6 months now and honestly the only way to get real help is to actually talk to someone there. The automated system and website are useless for complex issues like missing wages.

•Agreed. I spent months trying to figure out my eligibility online before finally getting through to an agent who sorted it out in 20 minutes.

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Worth every penny to avoid the phone hell.

Make sure you're not confusing regular unemployment with other programs. Some people think they can get UI benefits immediately after starting work but there are specific requirements about how long you need to work and how much you need to earn.

•I definitely worked long enough - 8 months straight. The problem seems to be that my wages weren't reported properly.

•That makes sense. Unreported wages are a common cause of denials.

You might also want to check if you qualify under the alternate base period. This uses more recent wages and can help people who recently started working or had gaps in employment.

Zainab Ibrahim
•How do I request that? Do I need to file a new claim?

Emma Anderson
•You don't file a new claim, but you need to specifically request the alternate base period calculation. This is something you'd need to discuss with a Washington ESD representative.

Been there! My first claim got denied too because I didn't understand the base period thing. Once I got my employer to fix their wage reporting and requested the alternate base period, everything went through fine. Don't give up!

•That's encouraging to hear. I'm going to push my old employer to get this fixed.

•Yeah definitely stay on them about it. Some employers are lazy about wage reporting until you make it their problem.

Just want to point out that even if your wages weren't reported, you should still be able to use pay stubs and W-2s as proof of employment. Washington ESD can accept alternative documentation in cases where employer reporting is missing.

•I have all my pay stubs saved. Should I mail them to Washington ESD or is there a way to upload them?

Isabella Ferreira
•You can upload documents through your online account, but for wage verification issues, you'll probably need to speak with someone directly to explain the situation.

omg this is so frustrating to read because I'm going through the exact same thing right now!! my employer "forgot" to report my wages and now I'm stuck in limbo

•Right?? It's like being punished for your employer's mistakes. So unfair.

•seriously considering using that calling service too because I can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD

I work in HR and see this all the time. Employers are required to report wages quarterly but some small businesses miss deadlines or don't understand the process. If your employer admits they didn't report, they need to contact Washington ESD immediately to file corrected reports.

•My employer said they'll "look into it" but I don't trust them to actually follow through. What can I do to make sure they actually file the reports?

•You can contact Washington ESD's employer services division yourself and report the issue. They'll follow up with your employer directly.

The whole wage reporting system is such a mess. I had to wait 3 months for my benefits because my employer filed late wages. During that time I almost lost my apartment.
0 coins
Zainab Ibrahim
•That's terrible! Did you eventually get back pay for those months?
0 coins
Freya Nielsen
•Yes, they back-dated everything once the wages were properly reported. But the waiting period was brutal.

Pro tip: if you're having wage reporting issues, document everything. Keep records of your communications with your employer and with Washington ESD. This can help speed up the resolution process.

•Good advice. I'm going to start keeping a log of all my calls and emails about this.

•Smart. Also screenshot your online account showing the missing wages - that's useful evidence.

I used Claimyr last month when I had a similar wage issue and they got me connected to someone who walked me through exactly what needed to happen with my employer. Definitely recommend it if you're stuck in phone hell.

Final update: I got through to Washington ESD (thanks to everyone who recommended Claimyr) and they confirmed my wages weren't reported. The agent helped me understand what my employer needs to do and gave me a reference number to track the correction. Hopefully this gets resolved soon!

•Great news! Once the wages are properly reported, your claim should be processed pretty quickly.
