Who applies for unemployment in Washington - confused about eligibility requirements
I'm really confused about who actually qualifies to apply for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. My roommate got laid off from her retail job and filed immediately, but I got my hours cut from full-time to part-time at the warehouse and wasn't sure if I should apply. Then my friend who quit his job said he was thinking about applying too. I thought you had to be completely unemployed but I'm seeing mixed information online. Can someone explain who is actually eligible to apply for unemployment benefits in Washington? I don't want to file if I'm not supposed to but I also don't want to miss out if I qualify.

You can definitely apply for partial unemployment if your hours got cut! Washington ESD allows claims for reduced hours as long as you're earning less than your weekly benefit amount.

•Really? I had no idea about partial unemployment. Do I still have to do the job search requirements?

StarStrider
•Yes, you still need to search for work and report it on your weekly claims, but the requirements might be different depending on your situation.

Your friend who quit probably doesn't qualify unless it was for good cause. Generally you need to be unemployed through no fault of your own - layoffs, company closure, hours reduction, etc. Quitting usually disqualifies you unless there were serious issues like unsafe working conditions or harassment.

•what about if you quit because your boss was making you work unpaid overtime? would that count as good cause?

Yuki Sato
•That could potentially qualify as good cause, especially if you can document the wage violations. Washington ESD looks at each situation individually.

I was struggling with getting through to Washington ESD for weeks about my eligibility questions. The phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made the whole process so much easier than trying to call myself.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already struggling financially and can't afford extra fees.

•It was worth it for me to finally get answers about my claim status. The peace of mind was huge.

Here's who typically qualifies for Washington unemployment benefits: 1) People who lost their job through no fault of their own (layoffs, company closure, position elimination), 2) Workers whose hours were significantly reduced, 3) People who quit for good cause (unsafe conditions, harassment, significant changes to job duties), 4) Seasonal workers when their season ends, 5) Some independent contractors in specific situations. You must also meet work history and wage requirements.

•what about people who got fired for attendance issues? my coworker got terminated for being late too many times

•Being fired for misconduct like chronic tardiness usually results in disqualification, but each case is reviewed individually during adjudication.

•adjudication takes forever though, my claim has been stuck there for 6 weeks

I'm so confused by all this. I work two part-time jobs and one of them ended but I still have the other one. Can I apply for unemployment for just the one job that ended?

•Yes, you can apply for partial unemployment if your total weekly earnings are less than your weekly benefit amount. Washington ESD will calculate your benefits based on your reduced income.

•Do I need to report the income from my remaining job every week?
0 coins
Jamal Anderson
•Absolutely. You must report all earnings when filing your weekly claims, even if it's just a few hours of work.

what about gig workers like uber drivers or doordash? can they apply for unemployment?
0 coins
Yuki Sato
•It depends on how you're classified. Most gig workers are independent contractors and don't qualify for regular UI benefits, but there might be other programs available.

I've been on standby status for 6 months because my union job is seasonal. Do I count as someone who applies for unemployment?

Jamal Anderson
•Standby status is different from regular unemployment claims. You're not actively searching for work because you have a defined return date to your job.

•Right, I don't have to do job searches but I still file weekly claims. It's confusing when people ask if I'm unemployed.

The whole system is a mess. I applied 8 weeks ago and still haven't gotten a decision. Called hundreds of times, sent messages through eServices, nothing. How is anyone supposed to survive this long without income?

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. The waiting and uncertainty was killing me. At least with their service I could actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about what was holding up my claim.

•I might have to try that. This is ridiculous.

students can't apply for unemployment right? I'm in college and work part-time but my hours got cut

Yuki Sato
•Students can apply for unemployment benefits if they meet the work history requirements and are available for work. Being a student doesn't automatically disqualify you.

•oh wow I had no idea. I thought students couldn't get unemployment at all

Don't forget that you need to have worked enough quarters and earned enough wages to qualify. Washington ESD has specific thresholds you need to meet based on your work history.

•How do I know if I've worked enough? I've been at my job for about 18 months.

StarStrider
•You can check your quarterly wage statements in your eServices account. You need wages in at least two quarters of your base year.

My sister applied after being laid off from her teaching job over the summer. She was worried because she has a contract to return in the fall but Washington ESD approved her claim.

•School employees can sometimes qualify for benefits during summer breaks if they don't have reasonable assurance of returning to work.

Amara Eze
•Yeah that makes sense. She wasn't guaranteed her position would still exist when school started.

What about people who work under the table? Can they apply for unemployment?

Yuki Sato
•To qualify for unemployment benefits, you need reported wages and employment history. Cash payments that weren't reported to the state won't count toward your eligibility.

•That's what I figured but wanted to check

I got fired from my last job for stealing (I didn't do it but they said I did). Will that prevent me from getting unemployment?
0 coins
Jamal Anderson
•Being fired for alleged misconduct will trigger an adjudication process where Washington ESD reviews the circumstances. You'll have a chance to present your side of the story.

•How long does adjudication take? I need to know if I should look for other assistance.

•Adjudication can take several weeks depending on the complexity of the case and how quickly they can gather information from all parties.

military spouses can apply too right? my husband is deployed and I had to quit my job because we're moving to a new base

Yuki Sato
•Military spouses may qualify for unemployment benefits in certain circumstances, especially if the job loss was due to a military-related move.

The bottom line is that most people who lose their job through no fault of their own can apply. The worst thing that happens is you get denied, but at least you tried.

Ethan Clark
•That's a good point. I was so worried about doing something wrong that I almost didn't apply at all.

Sofia Torres
•Exactly! And even if you get denied initially, you can always appeal the decision if you think it's wrong.

Just want to follow up on the Claimyr thing since a few people asked - I used them when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about my eligibility questions. Really helped me understand if I qualified and what I needed to do next. The demo video I mentioned shows exactly how their system works for getting through to ESD agents.

•It definitely saved me a lot of frustration. The phone system at Washington ESD is just impossible to navigate on your own.

retirees can't apply for unemployment right? my dad is thinking about taking early retirement but wants to know his options
0 coins
Jamal Anderson
•If someone chooses to retire, they typically don't qualify for unemployment benefits because they're voluntarily leaving the workforce.

Dmitry Smirnov
•Makes sense. I told him he should probably look into other retirement benefits instead.

I work for a temp agency and my assignment ended. Can I apply for unemployment between assignments?
0 coins
Yuki Sato
•Temporary workers can often qualify for unemployment benefits between assignments, but it depends on the specific circumstances and whether you're available for new assignments.

•The temp agency said they'd call me when something comes up but that could be weeks or months.

Thanks everyone for all the info. I think I understand better now who can apply. Seems like the key is whether you lost work through no fault of your own and whether you meet the work history requirements.

One more thing - make sure you apply as soon as possible after losing work. There's no waiting period but you can't get benefits for weeks before you actually file your claim.
0 coins
Ethan Clark
•That's really important to know. I've been putting off applying for weeks thinking I needed to wait for something.

•Nope, apply right away. Even if there are issues with your claim, at least you'll have the earliest possible effective date.
