Where to claim unemployment in Washington state - need help finding the right place to start
I just got laid off yesterday and I'm completely lost about where to claim unemployment benefits. I've never had to do this before and don't even know where to begin. Is there a specific Washington ESD website I need to go to? Do I need to go somewhere in person? I'm really confused about the whole process and could use some guidance on where to actually start my claim.

You'll want to go to the Washington State Employment Security Department website at esd.wa.gov. There's an 'Apply for Benefits' section where you can file your initial claim online. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months.

•Thank you! Do I need to file right away or can I wait a few days?

•File as soon as possible. Your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you lost your job, so waiting costs you money.

The online portal is called SecureAccess Washington (SAW). You'll create an account there and then apply for unemployment insurance benefits. Make sure you have your employer information handy including dates of employment and reason for separation.

•Is that the same login for filing weekly claims later?

Fatima Al-Rashid
•Yes, once you create your SAW account you'll use it for everything - filing your initial claim, weekly claims, checking payment status, updating job search activities.

I tried calling Washington ESD yesterday to ask the same question and was on hold for 3 hours before getting disconnected. The website is definitely your best bet. I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual person when I had questions later. They have this demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•That sounds really helpful! Did it cost a lot to use?

•It was worth it for me because I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and needed to talk to someone. Way better than wasting entire days trying to call.

•Never heard of that service but honestly anything is better than Washington ESD's phone system. It's completely broken.

Don't even bother trying to call them. I've been trying for 2 weeks to get through about my claim being stuck and it's impossible. The online system is the only way that actually works.

•Same here. I think they have like 2 people answering phones for the entire state.

•This is really discouraging. What if I have questions after I file?

For most basic questions, the website has a pretty good FAQ section. You can also send secure messages through your SAW account, though responses can take a while. The key is to be as complete as possible when filing your initial claim to avoid issues later.

•What kind of issues should I watch out for?

•Make sure all your employer information is accurate, especially dates and wages. Any discrepancies can trigger adjudication which delays your benefits.

Also heads up - after you file your initial claim, you have to file weekly claims every week to actually get paid. It's not automatic. I learned that the hard way and missed my first week of benefits.

•When do I file my first weekly claim?
0 coins
Giovanni Rossi
•Usually the Sunday after your waiting week ends. The system will tell you when it's available.

•Actually there's no waiting week anymore in Washington. You can file your first weekly claim right after your initial claim is processed.

The whole system is a mess honestly. I've been dealing with Washington ESD for 6 months now and it's been nothing but problems. Good luck getting any help when things go wrong.

•What kind of problems did you have?

KylieRose
•My claim went into adjudication because my former employer contested it. Took 3 months to resolve and I couldn't get anyone on the phone to explain what was happening.

Don't let the horror stories scare you. Most claims go through without major issues if you're eligible and provide accurate information. The problems you hear about are usually when there's a separation issue or wage discrepancy that needs investigation.

•How do I know if I'm eligible?

•Generally you need to have worked and earned wages in at least two quarters of your base period, lost your job through no fault of your own, and be able and available for work.

Just to add about Claimyr since someone asked - I used it when my claim got stuck and I needed to reach an actual Washington ESD agent. You basically tell them what you need help with and they get you connected. Saved me probably 20+ hours of calling myself.

•Did you have to give them all your personal info?

Aaliyah Jackson
•No, just basic contact info so they could set up the call. They don't need your SSN or claim details.

Make sure you keep track of all your job search activities from day one. Washington requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and you have to log them in the system.

•Where do I log the job search activities?

Sasha Ivanov
•In your SAW account there's a section for job search log. You enter the employer, position, date, and type of contact.

Jamal Brown
•This is really important - they can audit your job search activities and if you don't have them documented you could lose benefits.

One more tip - if you worked for multiple employers in the past year, make sure you list ALL of them on your application. I forgot about a part-time job I had 8 months ago and it caused delays.

•How far back do I need to go with employment history?

•They look at your 'base period' which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file.

The good news is once you get your claim established and start filing weekly, it becomes pretty routine. The hard part is just getting through the initial setup without any flags that send you to adjudication hell.

•Adjudication hell is right. 3 months of my life I'll never get back.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - couldn't wait months for adjudication to resolve itself.

Also be prepared for the identity verification process. They're really strict about it now. You'll need to upload documents proving who you are - driver's license, Social Security card, etc.

Zoe Papadopoulos
•How long does that verification take?

Giovanni Rossi
•Mine took about a week but I've heard it can take longer if there are any issues with your documents.

Just start the process online at esd.wa.gov and take it step by step. The system will guide you through everything you need to do. Don't overthink it.

•Good luck! Remember to file your weekly claims on time and keep looking for work. You've got this.

One last thing - if you get any correspondence from Washington ESD, respond to it immediately. Missing deadlines for things like appeals or providing requested information can mess up your whole claim.

Fatima Al-Rashid
•This is crucial advice. Washington ESD is very strict about deadlines and they don't give much leeway.

•I'll make sure to check my account regularly. Thanks again everyone!

Hope your experience goes smoother than mine did. The system works for some people, just be prepared for potential headaches.

Sasha Ivanov
•Try to stay positive. Most people don't post online when everything goes smoothly, so you mostly hear about the problems.

Final reminder - file your claim as soon as possible, be completely honest and accurate with all information, keep detailed records of everything, and stay on top of your weekly filings and job search requirements. You'll be fine.

•Perfect summary. I feel much more confident about starting this process now.

•And remember services like Claimyr exist if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. Don't spend weeks banging your head against the wall like I did.

Good luck with everything! The first few weeks are always the most stressful but it gets easier once you understand the routine.
