When do you get unemployment payment from Washington ESD - confused about timing
I just filed my first weekly claim on Sunday and I'm trying to figure out when I should expect to actually receive the unemployment payment. The Washington ESD website says payments are processed but doesn't give specific days. I have direct deposit set up but I'm not sure if that makes it faster or if there's still a waiting period. Does anyone know the typical timeline from filing your weekly claim to when the money actually hits your account?

Usually takes 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim if everything goes smoothly. But that's assuming your claim isn't in adjudication or anything like that.

•My claim status shows active so I think I'm good there. So if I filed Sunday, I should see it by Wednesday maybe?

•Yeah that sounds about right, maybe Thursday at the latest if there are no issues

Direct deposit is definitely faster than waiting for a debit card or check. I've been getting mine on Tuesdays consistently when I file my weekly claim on Sunday mornings.

•That's good to hear! I was worried it would take a week or something.

•Tuesday sounds fast, mine usually comes Wednesday but maybe it depends on your bank too

The key thing is making sure you file your weekly claim correctly and on time. Washington ESD processes payments in batches, typically Monday through Wednesday. If you have direct deposit, you should see it within 2-3 business days of filing. If you're using the unemployment debit card, it might take an extra day.

•What happens if I mess up filing my weekly claim? Can I fix it or do I lose that week's payment?

•You can usually call Washington ESD to correct mistakes, but it's better to be careful the first time. Double-check your work hours and job search activities before submitting.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to ask about payment timing because my first payment never came and I can't get through to anyone! The phone system is impossible. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to a real person there?

•I had the same problem until someone told me about claimyr.com - it's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you through to an agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Really? That actually works? I'm desperate at this point, I'll try anything to get answers about my missing payment.

•Yeah I used Claimyr too when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Much easier than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

Just a heads up - sometimes the first payment takes longer because Washington ESD has to verify everything. Don't panic if it's not exactly 2-3 days the first time.

•Good to know, I was already starting to worry and it's only been two days!

•My first payment took almost a week but after that it was regular every Tuesday

Make sure you're filing during the right time window too. I think you can file your weekly claim from Sunday at 6am through Saturday at midnight, but payments process faster if you file early in the week.

•I filed mine Sunday morning around 8am so hopefully that helps with the timing

•Sunday morning is perfect, that's what I always do and like I said I get paid Tuesdays

One thing to watch out for - if you worked any hours during the week you're claiming, make sure you report them accurately. Even small mistakes can delay your payment while Washington ESD reviews it.

•I didn't work at all last week so that shouldn't be an issue for me

•Yeah but still double check the job search requirements too, they're pretty strict about that now

Does anyone know if Washington ESD pays on holidays? Like if Tuesday is a federal holiday do they skip that week or pay Wednesday instead?

Axel Far
•Payments get delayed by one business day on federal holidays. So if Tuesday is a holiday, expect payment Wednesday instead.

Kaitlyn Otto
•Good question, I never thought about that but it makes sense they'd follow banking holidays

I'm still confused about the whole system. Do you get paid for the week you just completed or the week before that? Like when I file on Sunday, what week am I getting paid for?

•When you file your weekly claim on Sunday, you're certifying for the week that just ended (Sunday through Saturday). So if you file on January 12th, you're claiming for January 5-11.

•Oh that makes more sense, I thought there was some weird delay built in

•Yeah I was confused about that too at first but it's pretty straightforward once you get it

The waiting week thing confused me too when I first started. Washington doesn't have a waiting week anymore so you should get paid for your first week of unemployment as long as you're eligible.

•That's a relief, I was worried I'd have to wait an extra week for my first payment

Eva St. Cyr
•Yeah they got rid of the waiting week a few years ago, made things much easier

Just want to add that you should check your payment history in your Washington ESD account too. Sometimes payments show as processed there before they hit your bank account.

•Good tip! I'll check that tomorrow if I don't see anything in my bank account

•Yeah the payment history is helpful for tracking everything

I know this is slightly off topic but does anyone know how much the unemployment payment actually is? I filed but I'm not sure what to expect.

•Your weekly benefit amount is based on your earnings from your highest quarter in your base period. Washington ESD should have sent you a monetary determination letter showing your benefit amount when your claim was approved.

Ashley Simian
•I think I got that letter but I'll have to dig it up, thanks!

For what it's worth, I've found that Washington ESD is pretty reliable with payment timing once you get into the routine. It's just that first payment that can be nerve-wracking.

•That's reassuring to hear, I'm definitely feeling anxious about everything being new

•Yeah after a few weeks it becomes pretty routine and predictable

Quick question - if my bank account number changed, how do I update that with Washington ESD? Will that delay my payment?
0 coins
Axel Far
•You can update your direct deposit information through your SecureAccess Washington account. It might take one payment cycle to take effect, so you might need to get your next payment via debit card.

Taylor To
•Thanks, I'll get that updated right away then

I remember being so stressed about my first unemployment payment timing! Now I just file Sunday morning and know Tuesday is payday. You'll get used to the rhythm quickly.

•I hope so! This whole unemployment thing is stressful enough without worrying about when payments will come

•Totally understand that stress, we've all been there

One more thing - make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if you don't see a payment right away. Don't skip weeks thinking something is wrong, just keep filing and call Washington ESD if there's actually a problem.

Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•Good advice, I was wondering about that. So just keep filing every week no matter what?
0 coins
Kevin Bell
•Exactly, missing a weekly claim can cause way more problems than whatever payment delay you might be dealing with
0 coins
Axel Far
•Yes, continuous filing is crucial. Missing even one week can cause complications with your claim.

This thread is super helpful! I'm in the same boat as OP and was wondering the same thing about payment timing.

Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•Glad it's not just me! Sounds like we should both expect our payments by Wednesday if we filed Sunday

•Yeah fingers crossed! At least now I know what timeline to expect

Last bit of advice - if you ever have issues reaching Washington ESD by phone, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it got me through to an agent when I couldn't get past the busy signal for weeks.
