When do I start receiving unemployment benefits in Washington - timeline confusion
I submitted my unemployment claim last Tuesday and I'm really confused about when the payments actually start coming. The Washington ESD website says something about a waiting week but I'm not sure if that means I have to wait a full week before I can even file my first weekly claim or if the first week just doesn't get paid. My rent is due in 10 days and I'm starting to panic. Has anyone gone through this recently? How long from filing to actually getting money in your account?

The waiting week in Washington means your first eligible week doesn't get paid, but you still need to file weekly claims starting the week after you applied. So if you filed last Tuesday, you should be able to file your first weekly claim this Sunday for the week ending Saturday. Your second weekly claim (filed the following Sunday) would be your first payable week if you're approved.

•Thank you! So I need to start filing weekly claims even though the first one won't get paid?

•Exactly. You have to establish the pattern of filing every week or you could lose benefits. Don't skip that first weekly claim even though it's unpaid.

it depends on if your claim gets approved right away or goes into adjudication. mine sat in adjudication for 3 weeks before they approved it, so even though i filed weekly claims the whole time i didnt get paid until week 4

•Oh no, how do I know if mine is in adjudication? My eServices account just shows 'claim under review

•that sounds like adjudication to me. check if you have any 'to do' items in your account that need attention

I had the same confusion when I filed. Here's what I learned: Week 1 (when you file) = no payment possible. Week 2 = you file first weekly claim but it's the waiting week so no payment. Week 3 = you file second weekly claim and IF approved, this is your first payable week. Payments usually hit your account 2-3 business days after filing the weekly claim. The whole process from filing initial claim to first payment took me about 2.5 weeks.

•This is super helpful, thank you! Did you have any issues getting through to Washington ESD when you had questions?

•Oh yeah, calling Washington ESD is a nightmare. I probably spent 6 hours on hold total across multiple days trying to get answers.

•I found this service called Claimyr that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Saved me so much time and frustration. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Game changer for me when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE EVERY SUNDAY! I missed one weekly claim filing because I thought I had to wait longer and it messed up my whole claim. Had to restart the process.

•Wait, what happens if you miss filing a weekly claim?

•They close your claim! You can reopen it but there might be delays and you lose those weeks permanently.

•You can actually backdate missed weeks if you have good cause, but it's a hassle and requires documentation. Better to just file every week like clockwork.

honestly the whole system is confusing on purpose to make people give up. i had to file three separate times before i figured out all the rules

•Same experience here. The website makes it sound simple but there are so many hidden requirements.

•That's exactly how I feel right now. Like there's information I'm missing but I don't know what.

One more important thing - even if your initial claim is still under review, keep filing those weekly claims. If you get approved later, they'll pay you retroactively for all the weeks you properly filed, minus the waiting week. Just don't stop the weekly filing process.

•Good to know! I was worried about filing weekly claims before knowing if I'm approved.

•Yeah this is key advice. I stopped filing weekly claims when my claim went into adjudication and lost 2 weeks of benefits when I finally got approved.

The timing also depends on your payment method. Direct deposit is faster than the debit card they send you. If you can set up direct deposit in your eServices account, do it ASAP.

•I think I set up direct deposit when I applied but I'll double check. Thanks!

•The debit card took forever to arrive for me, like 2 weeks. Direct deposit was definitely the way to go.

Also remember you have to do job search activities every week and log them. Three job contacts per week minimum in Washington. Don't forget this part or it can hold up your payments.

•Where do I log the job search activities? Is that part of the weekly claim?

Freya Christensen
•Yes, there's a section in your weekly claim filing where you report your job search activities. Keep detailed records.

•You can also use WorkSourceWA.com to track some of your job search activities. It integrates with the Washington ESD system.

I'm in week 4 and still haven't gotten paid because they want more documentation about my separation from work. Meanwhile my bills are piling up. This system is broken.

•What kind of documentation did they ask for? Maybe others here have dealt with the same request.

•They want a detailed statement about why I left my job even though I already explained it was a layoff. Makes no sense.

•This is another situation where Claimyr really helped me. I was able to get through to an agent who explained exactly what documentation they needed and how to submit it properly. Check out claimyr.com if you're tired of the phone runaround.

Pro tip: file your weekly claim as early as possible on Sunday. I file mine at like 6am and it seems to process faster than when I filed later in the day.

•That's interesting, I wouldn't have thought the time of day mattered.

•I think it's just because fewer people are filing early Sunday morning so there's less system load.

Just want to add that if you're approved, your first payment should include both your first payable week AND any back pay from the waiting period if you qualify for certain programs. Don't panic if the first payment amount looks different than expected.

Paolo Longo
•Good point, I'll keep that in mind when I see my first payment amount.

•Wait, I thought the waiting week never gets paid back? When would it get paid?

•There are some federal programs that can waive the waiting week, but it's not common. Most people don't get that first week paid.

•Have you tried contacting your state representative's office? Sometimes they can help with Washington ESD issues that are dragging on too long.

•didnt know that was an option, ill look into it

•Before you go that route, definitely try getting through to an actual Washington ESD agent first. Claimyr made that possible for me when I couldn't get through on my own. Sometimes these delays are just miscommunications that can be cleared up quickly with the right person.

The whole timeline gets messed up if you file your initial claim incorrectly too. I had to refile mine because I put the wrong separation date and it delayed everything by 3 weeks.

Paolo Longo
•How did you know you had put the wrong date? Did they tell you or did you figure it out?

Nia Harris
•They sent me a letter asking for clarification about the dates, then I realized my mistake. Always double check your initial application before submitting.

For anyone reading this thread later - the key takeaway is START FILING WEEKLY CLAIMS IMMEDIATELY even if your initial claim is still processing. Don't wait. File every single Sunday without fail. That's the most important thing to remember.

Update for OP: I just got my first payment after 3 weeks total (filed initial claim, waited one week, filed first weekly claim for waiting week, filed second weekly claim and got paid 3 days later). So if everything goes smoothly you're looking at about 2.5-3 weeks from initial filing to first payment.

Paolo Longo
•That gives me hope! Fingers crossed mine goes as smoothly as yours did.

•Just stay on top of the weekly claims and you should be fine. Good luck!

Another tip that helped me - set up text or email alerts in your eServices account so you get notified immediately if there are any issues with your weekly claim or if additional documentation is needed. I caught a problem early because of the alerts and was able to fix it before it delayed my payments. The alerts also remind you when it's time to file your weekly claim each Sunday.
