When did unemployment start for covid in Washington ESD system?
I'm trying to figure out the timeline of when Washington ESD first started processing unemployment claims related to COVID-19. My employer laid me off in March 2020 but I didn't file right away because I was confused about what programs were available. Now I'm dealing with some paperwork issues and Washington ESD is asking about dates from that time period. Does anyone remember exactly when the pandemic unemployment programs became available through Washington ESD? I think I missed some deadlines but want to make sure I have the right dates.

The CARES Act was signed March 27, 2020, but it took Washington ESD a few weeks to implement the new programs. Regular unemployment was always available, but the expanded benefits and new categories like PUA didn't start until mid-April 2020 in most states.

•That makes sense. I think I was eligible for regular UI but got confused by all the new program names being thrown around.

Washington ESD started accepting applications for pandemic-related benefits around April 18, 2020. The regular unemployment program was already in place, but they had to build new systems for PUA and the $600 weekly boost. If you're dealing with Washington ESD paperwork issues now, you might want to try calling them directly.

•I've been trying to call for weeks but can never get through. The hold times are still ridiculous even now.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I found out about it recently and it actually got me through to a Washington ESD agent within a few hours. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than sitting on hold all day.

I remember filing my first claim in late March 2020 and it was a nightmare. Washington ESD's system kept crashing and nobody knew what they were doing. The phone lines were completely jammed. Took me almost 2 months to get my first payment.

•Two months?? That's terrible. I hope the system is better now for current claims.

•It's definitely better than 2020 but still has issues. I had to call Washington ESD last month about an adjudication problem and it took forever to reach someone.

•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr - it handles the calling part for you. You just put in your info at claimyr.com and they call Washington ESD repeatedly until they get through, then connect you. Saved me hours of frustration.

The pandemic programs are over now though, right? If you're filing a new claim today it would just be regular Washington ESD unemployment benefits. The extra $600 and $300 payments ended a long time ago.

•Yeah I know the pandemic programs ended. I'm dealing with old paperwork from 2020 that Washington ESD is now questioning. Something about whether I was actually eligible back then.

•Oh that's different. Washington ESD has been doing a lot of auditing of old pandemic claims. You definitely need to talk to them directly about that kind of issue.

why are they bothering people about old claims now?? seems like they should have figured this out years ago

•There was a lot of fraud during the pandemic, so Washington ESD is required to review claims and recover overpayments. It's frustrating but they have to do it.

•I wasn't trying to commit fraud, I just filed based on what I thought I was supposed to do at the time. Everything was so confusing.

I think Washington ESD started taking regular unemployment claims immediately when the pandemic hit, but the special programs took longer to roll out. The dates might vary depending on which program you're talking about.

•That's probably why I'm confused about the timeline. I might have filed for regular UI first and then gotten moved to a different program later.

•Yeah that happened to a lot of people. The programs overlapped and Washington ESD moved people around between them.

The whole pandemic response was a mess. I know people who got overpaid and now owe money back, and others who never got what they deserved. Washington ESD is still sorting it all out.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about. I don't want to owe money back if I filed correctly at the time.

•definitely get documentation together before you talk to washington esd about it

If you need exact dates for your paperwork, Washington ESD should have records of when you filed and what programs you were on. But good luck getting someone on the phone to help you access those records.

•Seriously try Claimyr if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD. I was skeptical at first but it really works. They keep calling until someone answers and then patch you through.

The regular Washington ESD unemployment system was always there, but they added the pandemic programs in phases. PUA for gig workers came later than the regular UI expansion. If you were a traditional employee you probably qualified for regular benefits right away.

•I was a regular employee so that makes sense. I probably should have just filed regular UI instead of waiting for the other programs.

Washington ESD's website has some historical information about when different programs started, but it's not easy to find. You might have better luck calling them directly for your specific situation.

•I'll keep trying to call. Maybe I'll get lucky and get through eventually.

•Or use Claimyr to skip the wait. I'm telling you, it's worth it to not waste hours on hold.

Good luck with your paperwork issues. The pandemic unemployment stuff is still causing problems for people years later. Washington ESD really should have better systems in place by now.
