When did Washington ESD COVID unemployment benefits officially end?
I keep hearing different dates about when the pandemic unemployment programs ended in Washington state. My neighbor says it was September 2021 but I thought it went longer? I'm trying to figure out if I might have missed filing for something back then. Anyone know the exact cutoff dates for PUA, PEUC, and the extra $300 weekly payments through Washington ESD?

The federal pandemic programs (PUA, PEUC, and the $300 Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation) all ended on September 4, 2021 in Washington state. That was a Saturday, so the last week you could claim was the week ending September 4th.

•Thanks! So if someone was on regular UI after that date, they just got the state amount with no extra $300?

Yuki Tanaka
•Exactly. After September 4, 2021, only regular state unemployment insurance continued with the standard Washington weekly benefit amounts.

I remember that transition period was confusing for a lot of people. Washington ESD had to process thousands of claims that were switching from pandemic programs back to regular UI. Took weeks for some people to get their benefits sorted out.

•yes!! i was one of those people stuck in limbo for like 3 weeks while they figured out my claim

•The system just wasn't set up to handle that volume of transitions smoothly. I heard Washington ESD had to bring in extra staff to process everything.

If you're trying to research old claims or think you missed something, you might want to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD directly. I spent months trying to figure out my 2021 benefits through their website and messages, getting nowhere. Finally used claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent who pulled up my whole claim history in 5 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works - basically they handle the calling and waiting so you don't have to sit on hold for hours.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already broke from being unemployed lol

•It's way cheaper than the time and frustration I was wasting trying to get through on my own. Plus they actually got me connected to someone who could help.

•I might try that. I've been calling Washington ESD for two weeks about this and either get disconnected or told they'll call me back (they never do).

The whole covid unemployment thing was such a mess. I knew people who got overpaid and had to pay back thousands, others who never got what they were owed. Washington ESD is STILL dealing with appeals and audits from that period.

•Tell me about it. My sister got an overpayment notice last year for PUA she received in 2020. Two years later!

•That's exactly what I mean. The whole system was thrown together so fast during the pandemic that they're still sorting out the mess.

Just to clarify the timeline for anyone reading this: PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance) was for self-employed, gig workers, etc. PEUC (Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation) extended regular UI benefits. Both ended September 4, 2021. The extra $300 weekly payment (FPUC) also ended that same date. After that, Washington state went back to pre-pandemic unemployment rules and benefit amounts.

•What about people who were still on regular UI after September 2021? Did their benefits continue normally?
0 coins
Yuki Tanaka
•Yes, if you qualified for regular state unemployment insurance, that continued as normal. You just lost the extra $300 per week federal addition.

•That makes sense. I think that's what happened to my situation - I was confused about which program I was actually on.

i remember that september 2021 date because it was right when i was supposed to go back to work but then my job fell through AGAIN and suddenly there was no more pandemic unemployment to fall back on. worst timing ever

Gabrielle Dubois
•That's rough timing. Did you end up qualifying for regular Washington ESD benefits?

Klaus Schmidt
•eventually yeah but it took forever to get approved and the weekly amount was way less than what i was getting with the extra $300

For anyone dealing with old pandemic-era claims, keep in mind that Washington ESD extended some deadlines for appeals and documentation. But those extensions have mostly expired by now. If you think you have an issue from 2020-2021, don't wait to address it.

•Good point. I should probably get this sorted out sooner rather than later.

•How do you even know if you have an issue from back then? My records are a mess.

•Log into your Washington ESD account and check your payment history. Look for any overpayment notices or pending issues. If you can't figure it out from the online system, that's when calling becomes necessary.

The September 4, 2021 date is burned into my memory because I was helping my elderly neighbor with her claim and we had no idea the programs were ending. She went from getting like $450/week to suddenly nothing because she didn't qualify for regular UI as a self-employed person.

•That's exactly the kind of situation that caught so many people off guard. The communication about the end dates wasn't great.

•Washington ESD did send notices but they were confusing and a lot of people didn't understand what it meant for their specific situation.

Since we're talking about getting answers from Washington ESD - seriously consider using a service like Claimyr if you need to actually speak with someone about your old claims. I wasted so much time trying to get through their phone system the traditional way. With Claimyr, they handle all the calling and waiting, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration and I actually got my questions answered.

•Does it actually work though? Sounds too good to be true.

Just remembered - there was also that Mixed Earners Unemployment Compensation (MEUC) program that gave an extra $100/week to certain people. That also ended September 4, 2021. A lot of people forget about that one.
0 coins
Yuki Tanaka
•Good catch! MEUC was for people getting regular UI who also had self-employment income. Not many people qualified but it was another $100/week for those who did.

•I have no idea if I was eligible for that. This is exactly why I need to talk to someone about my 2021 claims.

The whole pandemic unemployment era feels like a fever dream now. So many different programs, extensions, changes in rules. I don't blame anyone for being confused about what ended when.

•Right? And now Washington ESD acts like everyone should have perfectly understood a system that was changing every few months.

•I kept a spreadsheet trying to track all the different programs and deadlines. Even then I was confused half the time.

wait so if covid unemployment ended in september 2021, why am i still seeing news about unemployment fraud from that time? are they still investigating?
0 coins
Esmeralda Gómez
•Yes, Washington ESD is still investigating fraud cases and recovering fraudulent payments from the pandemic era. That's separate from the programs ending - they're still cleaning up the mess.

•oh ok that makes sense. i was worried there was some program i missed out on lol

For what it's worth, if you're trying to research your 2021 claims, Washington ESD keeps records going back several years. You should be able to see your full payment history in your online account, including which programs you received benefits from and when they ended.

CaptainAwesome
•I tried looking at my account online but it's confusing. All these different program codes and payment types. I can't tell what's what.
0 coins
TechNinja
•Yeah, their online system isn't the most user-friendly. The payment history shows codes like 'UI' for regular benefits, 'PUA' for pandemic assistance, 'PEUC' for extended benefits, etc. But it's not always clear which is which.

This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD. Trying to decipher their online records and figure out what happened with my 2021 claims was giving me a headache. One phone call with an actual agent cleared everything up. They could see my entire claim history and explain what each payment was for. Worth every penny to avoid the hassle of trying to get through their phone system myself.

•How long did it take them to get you connected to someone?

•They called me back within a few hours and had me connected to a Washington ESD agent. Way faster than trying to call myself and sitting on hold all day.

I still can't believe how abruptly everything ended. One week you're getting all these benefits, the next week it's just gone. No gradual phase-out or anything.

Dmitri Volkov
•That's how federal programs work - they have hard end dates. Congress didn't extend the pandemic programs past September 2021.
0 coins
Paolo Bianchi
•I get that, but it would have been nice to have better communication about what to expect after the programs ended.

Bottom line: all pandemic unemployment programs ended September 4, 2021 in Washington. After that date, only regular state UI continued for people who qualified. If you have questions about your specific situation from that time period, you'll probably need to talk to Washington ESD directly since the online records can be confusing.

•Perfect summary, thank you! Now I just need to figure out how to actually get someone on the phone at Washington ESD to review my 2021 claims.

•Like I mentioned earlier, Claimyr.com made that process so much easier for me. They handle the calling and waiting, you just talk to the agent when they get you connected.
