When did pandemic unemployment end in Washington state - confused about dates
I'm trying to figure out exactly when all the pandemic unemployment programs ended in Washington. I know PUA and PEUC are long gone but I'm seeing conflicting info online about the exact dates. My cousin says it was September 2021 but I thought some programs went longer? Need to know for tax purposes since I'm doing my 2021 returns late. Can anyone clarify the timeline?

The federal pandemic programs (PUA, PEUC, FPUC) all ended September 4, 2021 in Washington. Regular UI continued but without the extra $300 weekly boost. Washington ESD sent notices about this in August 2021.

•Thanks! So after Sept 4 2021 it was just regular UI benefits with no extra money?

Diego Chavez
•Exactly. Back to the regular weekly benefit amount based on your earnings history.

•Same here. The transition back to regular benefits was rough for a lot of people who had been on PUA.

•worst part was trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask questions about the switch

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD for tax questions, I used Claimyr.com recently and it actually got me through to an agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of that service. Does it really work better than calling directly?

•In my experience yes. They handle the waiting and get you connected when an agent is available.

•I'm skeptical of third party services but honestly anything is better than sitting on hold for 3 hours

WAIT there were different end dates for different programs??? I thought everything ended at once. This is so confusing!

•No, they all ended the same day - September 4, 2021. PUA, PEUC, and the extra $300 (FPUC) all stopped together.

•OK that makes more sense. I was reading something that made it sound like they ended on different dates.

For tax purposes, you should have received 1099-G forms from Washington ESD for any unemployment benefits paid in 2021, including the pandemic programs. If you didn't get them, you can access them through your SecureAccess Washington account.

•I think I lost mine. Can I still get a copy online this late?

•Yes, tax documents stay available in your online account. Log in to your Washington ESD account and look for tax information.

The transition was a mess. I was on PEUC and they didn't explain clearly what would happen after September. Had to figure it out myself.

•Same experience here. Very little communication from Washington ESD about the changes.

•They did send notices but I agree the information could have been clearer about next steps.

Is regular unemployment still available now in 2025 or did that end too? Sorry if this is obvious but I'm not sure what's still running.

•Regular unemployment insurance (UI) is a permanent program. It's still available if you lose your job through no fault of your own. Only the pandemic-specific programs ended.

•Got it, thanks for clarifying that.

I was lucky to transition back to work before the programs ended but I remember the panic in the unemployment Facebook groups when September approached.

•Those groups were so helpful during the pandemic. Lot of misinformation too but people were really trying to help each other.

•True, had to be careful about what advice to follow since Washington ESD rules are specific.

For anyone still dealing with Washington ESD issues, I had good luck with Claimyr when I needed to reach someone about my benefit year ending. Much easier than the regular phone lines.

•How much does something like that cost?

•I'd rather pay something reasonable than waste entire days trying to get through. Check their website for current info.

September 4 2021 was definitely the end date. I remember because it was right after Labor Day weekend. Made the transition feel extra symbolic.

AstroAlpha
•That timing does seem intentional. End of summer, back to normal work patterns.

Ethan Moore
•Probably was intentional. Federal government tends to plan these dates carefully.

Anyone know if there are any special tax implications for people who were on pandemic unemployment vs regular UI? Doing my taxes now and want to make sure I don't miss anything.

•All unemployment benefits are taxable income. The main difference was some pandemic benefits had different withholding options.

Yuki Nakamura
•Should I have had taxes withheld? I don't think I did for some of it.

Sean O'Brien
•You might owe taxes then. Consider consulting a tax professional if the amounts are significant.

The end of pandemic unemployment was rough but honestly the system needed to get back to normal. Too many people were gaming it by the end.

Carmen Reyes
•That's a pretty harsh take. Most people were just trying to survive during an unprecedented situation.

•I'm not saying everyone, but there was definitely fraud happening that made it harder for legitimate claimants.

Nia Harris
•The fraud was a real problem but so was the lack of jobs during the worst of the pandemic.

I had to deal with Washington ESD about overpayment issues related to the transition period. If anyone needs to reach them about similar problems, that Claimyr service actually worked for me too.

•Overpayment from the transition? What happened there?

•There was some confusion about my eligibility during the switch from PEUC to regular UI. Took months to sort out.

Just want to confirm - nothing pandemic-related is still running in Washington, right? All back to regular unemployment rules?
0 coins
Diego Chavez
•Correct. We're back to standard UI rules and benefit amounts. No more pandemic programs or enhanced benefits.

•Thanks, that's what I thought but wanted to double check.

September 2021 feels like a lifetime ago now. Hard to believe we went through all that craziness with the unemployment system.

Anastasia Smirnova
•Right? The constant changes to programs, the website crashes, the impossible phone waits...

•At least Washington ESD's website seems more stable now compared to 2020-2021.

Does anyone know if they ever fixed all the identity verification issues that were happening during the pandemic? That was such a nightmare.
0 coins
Diego Chavez
•ID verification is still required but the process seems more streamlined now. They use ID.me for most verifications.

•Good to know it's improved. That was causing so many claim delays back then.

For the original poster - make sure you have all your 1099-G forms before filing taxes. Washington ESD issued separate ones for different benefit types in 2021.

AstroAlpha
•I'll check my account for multiple forms. Didn't realize there might be more than one.
0 coins
CosmicCadet
•Yeah, PUA and regular UI sometimes came on separate forms depending on timing.

This thread is helpful. I was also confused about the exact timeline since there was so much conflicting info online from different sources.

•Glad I'm not the only one who found it confusing! September 4, 2021 seems to be the definitive answer.
0 coins
Diego Chavez
•Yes, that's the official end date for all federal pandemic unemployment programs in Washington.

One thing to remember is that even though pandemic programs ended, regular UI benefit amounts and duration can still change based on economic conditions and state legislation.
0 coins
AstroAlpha
•Good point. So the basic program continues but the specific rules can evolve over time.
0 coins
Amara Adeyemi
•Exactly. Always check current Washington ESD guidance for the most up-to-date benefit information.
