What to do during unemployment - confused about Washington ESD requirements
I just got laid off from my retail job last week and filed for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. This is my first time being unemployed and I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing while I wait for my claim to be processed. Do I need to be applying for jobs right away? What about the weekly claims I keep hearing about? I'm totally lost and don't want to mess anything up that could affect my benefits. Any guidance would be really appreciated.

Welcome to the club unfortunately. Yes you need to start your job search immediately and keep detailed records. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and log them all. You'll also need to file weekly claims every Sunday starting the week after you filed your initial claim.

•3 job search contacts per week? That seems like a lot. What counts as a contact?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, job fairs, informational interviews. You need to keep a log with employer names, dates, and what you did.

Don't forget about WorkSourceWA registration too! You have to register there within a certain timeframe or your benefits can get suspended. The whole system is confusing at first but you'll get the hang of it.

•How long do I have to register with WorkSourceWA?

•I think it's within 4 weeks of filing but don't quote me on that. Better to do it ASAP to be safe.

I was in your exact situation 8 months ago and struggled for weeks trying to get through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim status. The phone lines are absolutely brutal - I'd call hundreds of times and never get through. Then someone told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) which actually gets you connected to ESD agents. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Honestly saved my sanity during those first few weeks.

•Really? How does that work exactly? Is it expensive?

•It's a service that handles the calling for you and gets you in the queue. Way better than spending your whole day redialing Washington ESD.

•That actually sounds really helpful. The one time I tried calling ESD I was on hold for 2 hours before getting disconnected.

•I feel you. The whole process is designed to make people give up.

•That's discouraging to hear but I guess I need to push through it.

Here's the basic weekly routine you need to follow: 1) File your weekly claim every Sunday between 6am Monday and 11:59pm Saturday, 2) Apply for at least 3 jobs and document everything, 3) Be available for work (don't plan any vacations without notifying ESD), 4) Report any work or income even if it's just a few hours. Miss any of these and your benefits can be delayed or denied.

•This is super helpful, thank you! What happens if I get a part-time job while collecting?

•You can work part-time and still collect partial benefits as long as you report all earnings. Washington ESD has specific calculations for how much you can earn.

•Good to know. I was worried any work would disqualify me completely.

make sure you check your esd account regularly too for any messages or requests for info. they love to ask for random documents and if you miss the deadline you're screwed

James Maki
•How often should I be checking? Daily?

Danielle Mays
•i check every few days just to be safe. sometimes they ask for pay stubs or separation documents

One thing I wish someone had told me early on - if your claim goes into adjudication, don't panic. It's normal for them to review new claims, especially if there are any questions about your separation from your employer. Just be patient and respond promptly to any requests for information.

James Maki
•What's adjudication exactly? Should I be worried if that happens?

Jasmine Hancock
•It's just their review process to make sure you're eligible. Can take a few weeks but it's routine for many claims.

•Mine was in adjudication for 6 weeks! Nearly gave me a heart attack but it all worked out.

Also don't forget about the tax implications. Your unemployment benefits are taxable income so you might want to have taxes withheld or set money aside for tax season.

James Maki
•Oh wow I hadn't even thought about taxes. Can I have them withheld automatically?
0 coins
Cole Roush
•Yes, there's an option in your ESD account to withhold 10% for federal taxes.

This brings back memories of when I first filed. The learning curve is steep but you'll figure it out. Just remember that Washington ESD is slow but they usually get things right eventually. Don't let the horror stories scare you too much.

•Thanks for the encouragement. It's overwhelming but I'm starting to understand the process better.

Since you mentioned being confused about the requirements, I'd really recommend using Claimyr if you need to talk to someone at ESD directly. The regular phone lines are basically impossible to get through, but with their service you can actually get answers to your specific questions without wasting entire days calling.

•I second this. Used Claimyr last month when my weekly claim got stuck and they got me through to someone who fixed it in 10 minutes.

•That's really good to know. I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues.

Just want to add - don't turn down suitable work offers or you could lose your benefits. Washington ESD defines suitable work based on your skills and experience, but after a certain period they expect you to consider jobs that pay less than your previous position.
0 coins
James Maki
•How much less? I don't want to take a huge pay cut if I don't have to.

Seraphina Delan
•I think after 13 weeks you have to consider jobs paying 75% of your previous wage, but double check that.

whatever you do dont lie about anything on your weekly claims. they audit these things and if they catch you in any inconsistency they'll make you pay everything back plus penalties

•Definitely planning to be completely honest. Not worth the risk.

The job search requirement is probably the most important thing to stay on top of. I know people who lost weeks of benefits because they couldn't prove they were actively looking for work. Keep spreadsheets, save email confirmations, document everything.

James Maki
•Should I be applying to jobs outside my field too or can I focus on retail positions?
0 coins
Kristin Frank
•You can focus on your field initially but be prepared to expand your search if benefits drag on.

•I made the mistake of being too picky early on. Cast a wide net from the start.

One more thing - if you're thinking about going back to school or doing training programs, check with WorkSourceWA first. Some programs can help with your job search requirements and there might be funding available.

James Maki
•That's interesting. I've been thinking about getting some certifications while I'm unemployed.

•Definitely look into it. WorkSourceWA has partnerships with community colleges and training providers.

The whole system seems designed to confuse people honestly. I spent my first month doing everything wrong until I figured out the actual requirements. At least now there are resources like forums and services to help navigate it.

Just remember that every situation is different. What worked for me might not apply to your case, especially if you have any complications like being on standby status or having multiple employers. When in doubt, get official answers from ESD directly.

•Good point. I'll make sure to verify anything I'm unsure about.

Been through this process twice now and the key is staying organized and not procrastinating on any requirements. Set up a system for tracking your job searches, mark your calendar for weekly claim filing, and don't let anything slide. Washington ESD is not forgiving about missed deadlines.

James Maki
•I'm going to set up a spreadsheet tonight to track everything. Thanks for all the advice everyone!

•Smart approach. And remember Claimyr is there if you need to actually talk to someone at ESD without the phone nightmare.

Good luck with everything! The first few weeks are the hardest as you learn the system, but it gets routine after that. Most people get through the process just fine as long as they follow the rules.

This thread is gold for anyone starting the unemployment process. Wish I had found something like this when I first filed. Would have saved me weeks of confusion and stress.

•Agreed! I'm bookmarking this for reference as I go through the process.

One last tip - if you ever need to appeal a decision or deal with an overpayment notice, don't ignore it. Washington ESD gives you limited time to respond and missing those deadlines can be costly. Get help if you need it but don't let things slide.

James Maki
•Hopefully I won't need to deal with appeals, but good to know. Thanks again everyone!

•And if you do need help with appeals or complex issues, that's another situation where Claimyr can be really valuable for getting through to the right people at ESD.
