What reason should I put for unemployment on my Washington ESD application?

I'm filling out my unemployment application on Washington ESD and I'm stuck on the reason for separation part. I was basically pushed out of my job - they cut my hours down to almost nothing and made the work environment really hostile until I quit. Should I put 'quit' or is there another option that would be better? I'm worried if I say I quit they'll deny my claim but I don't want to lie either. What did everyone else put for their reason?

If you were forced to quit due to hostile work environment or constructive dismissal, that's usually considered 'good cause' in Washington. You should select the option that best describes being forced to quit due to working conditions. Document everything - emails, texts, schedule changes, etc.

Thank you! I do have some emails showing the schedule cuts. Should I upload those right away or wait until they ask?

0 coins

Upload them with your initial application if possible. It helps establish your case from the start and can prevent delays in adjudication.

I had a similar situation last year. Put down that you quit with good cause and explain the circumstances in the comments section. Washington ESD will investigate and if your employer can't justify the hostile conditions, you'll likely get approved.

0 coins

How long did it take for them to make a decision on your case?

0 coins

About 5 weeks total. It went to adjudication but I eventually got approved and received back pay for the whole period.

0 coins

Whatever you do, be 100% honest. Washington ESD will contact your employer and if your stories don't match up, you could be denied for providing false information. I've seen people get in trouble for that.

0 coins

That's what I'm worried about. My employer will probably say I just quit without notice.

0 coins

That's why documentation is so important. If you have proof they cut your hours or created hostile conditions, that supports your side of the story.

I had trouble reaching Washington ESD to ask questions about my application. Ended up using claimyr.com to get through to an actual person - they have this system that calls back when an agent is available. Really helped me understand what documentation I needed. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Is that service legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

0 coins

Yeah it's real. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals. The agent I talked to helped clarify exactly what constitutes 'good cause' for quitting.

0 coins

just put down whatever and see what happens. they approve most claims anyway these days

0 coins

That's terrible advice. Providing inaccurate information can result in overpayment demands and penalties.

0 coins

ok fine but the system is so backed up they barely check anything

The Washington ESD adjudication process for quit cases can be really thorough. Make sure you have documentation of any attempts you made to resolve the issues with your employer before quitting. Did you talk to HR or your supervisor about the problems?

0 coins

I tried talking to my manager but they just brushed me off. Didn't have an HR department since it was a small company.

0 coins

Document that conversation too if you can remember dates and what was said. Shows you tried to resolve things before quitting.

0 coins

Ugh this is exactly why I hate the unemployment system. You get treated badly at work, forced to quit to protect your mental health, then have to jump through hoops to prove you 'deserved' to quit. It's ridiculous.

0 coins

I feel you. The whole system assumes employers are always acting in good faith when we know that's not true.

0 coins

Right? It shouldn't be this complicated when someone creates a toxic workplace.

0 coins

Look for the option that says something like 'quit with good cause' or 'constructive dismissal.' Washington has specific categories for situations where you're basically forced out. The exact wording might be different but there should be an option that fits your situation.

0 coins

I'll look through the options again more carefully. Maybe I missed something the first time.

0 coins

Sometimes the dropdown menus have more options than what's initially visible. Make sure to scroll through all possibilities.

0 coins

Been there with a toxic boss situation. Put down that you quit due to working conditions and be prepared for them to contact your employer. The adjudication process isn't fun but if you have documentation you should be fine.

0 coins

Did your employer try to fight the claim?

0 coins

Yeah they disputed it initially but I had emails and witness statements from coworkers. Washington ESD sided with me after reviewing everything.

0 coins

Whatever you choose, make sure you're consistent in all your responses. The adjudicator will look at everything - your application, your employer's response, any additional documentation. Any contradictions can hurt your case.

0 coins

Good point. I should probably write down what I'm planning to say before I submit.

0 coins

Exactly. Keep a copy of your responses for your records too in case they ask follow-up questions later.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has some guidance on what constitutes good cause for quitting. Might be worth reading through that before you submit your application. Better to get it right the first time than have to appeal later.

0 coins

I'll check that out. Do you remember where on the site that information is?

0 coins

Look under the 'Eligibility' section. There's a whole page about reasons for job separation and what qualifies.

0 coins

honestly the whole process is a nightmare. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment and that was for a layoff which should have been straightforward

0 coins

6 weeks is actually pretty normal these days unfortunately. The system is overwhelmed.

0 coins

still ridiculous when people need money to pay rent and buy food

0 coins

I used Claimyr when I was dealing with Washington ESD questions about my separation reason. Being able to actually talk to someone made a huge difference in understanding what information they needed. Way better than trying to guess based on the website.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? I'm already broke which is why I need unemployment.

0 coins

It's way cheaper than potentially getting denied and having to appeal or deal with delays. The peace of mind was worth it for me.

0 coins

Make sure you keep copies of everything you submit. If your claim gets denied and you have to appeal, you'll need all that documentation again. The appeals process requires even more proof than the initial application.

0 coins

Great advice. I'll make sure to screenshot everything before I submit.

0 coins

Screenshots and save any confirmation numbers or reference numbers they give you too.

0 coins

Had a friend who put 'laid off' when they actually quit and got caught during the investigation. Ended up having to pay back everything plus penalties. Not worth the risk.

0 coins

Yikes that's my worst fear. Definitely going to be honest about quitting.

0 coins

Yeah just be truthful and let them decide. Better to be denied initially than get in trouble for fraud later.

0 coins

The adjudication process for quit cases usually involves them calling both you and your employer to get statements. Be prepared to explain your side clearly and have your documentation ready to reference during the call.

0 coins

Do they usually call or is it more likely to be by mail/email?

0 coins

In my experience it was a phone call but they might also send written questions. Depends on the case complexity.

0 coins

Same situation happened to my sister last year. She was scared to put that she quit but the hostile work environment was well documented. Got approved after adjudication and the employer didn't even contest it once Washington ESD started asking questions.

0 coins

That gives me hope! Maybe my employer won't fight it either if they know they were in the wrong.

0 coins

Exactly. A lot of employers know when they've created bad situations and don't want that scrutinized too closely.

0 coins

Just submitted my application last week using Claimyr to talk to someone first about the best way to explain my situation. The agent I spoke with helped me understand exactly what details Washington ESD would need to see in my explanation. Made the whole process way less stressful.

0 coins

I think I'm going to try that service. This is too important to mess up by guessing.

0 coins

Smart choice. Having someone explain the process before you submit definitely helps avoid mistakes.

0 coins

Remember that Washington ESD has to prove misconduct on your part if they want to deny benefits for quitting. If you quit due to employer actions that would cause a reasonable person to quit, that's usually considered good cause.

0 coins

That's helpful to know. I definitely think cutting someone's hours by 75% would make anyone quit.

0 coins

Absolutely. Significant hour reduction without cause is often considered constructive dismissal.

0 coins

Update us on how it goes! I'm sure other people will have similar questions about quit vs other reasons.

0 coins

Will do! Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice. Feeling much more confident about filling this out now.
