What to put on Washington ESD unemployment application if fired - need help with termination section
Got terminated from my warehouse job last week and I'm trying to fill out my Washington ESD unemployment application online. There's a section asking about the reason I'm no longer working and I'm not sure what exactly to put. My supervisor said it was due to 'performance issues' but I feel like it was really because I questioned some safety protocols. Should I put down what they told me or what I think the real reason was? I'm worried if I put the wrong thing it will mess up my claim. Has anyone dealt with this before?

You should put down exactly what your employer told you was the reason for termination. Washington ESD will contact your employer to verify the information anyway, so you want your story to match theirs initially. If you believe you were wrongfully terminated, you can explain your side during the fact-finding interview if they schedule one.

•That makes sense. So I should write 'performance issues' even though I disagree with it?

•Yes, exactly. Be honest about what they told you. You'll have opportunities later to provide your perspective if Washington ESD needs more information.

I was in a similar situation last year. Put down what's on your termination paperwork or what HR told you. Washington ESD will do their own investigation if there are any questions about misconduct.

•Did they end up approving your claim? I'm so stressed about this whole process.

•Yeah it took about 3 weeks to get approved. They did call my old employer but everything worked out fine.

Be very careful here. If your employer claims you were fired for misconduct, Washington ESD might deny your benefits. Make sure you document everything about the safety concerns you raised - dates, emails, witnesses. That could be important if they try to fight your claim.

•I do have some emails about the safety issues. Should I submit those with my application?

•Keep them ready but don't submit unless Washington ESD asks for additional documentation. They'll tell you if they need more info.

•This is exactly why I had to use claimyr.com when my claim got complicated. Trying to reach Washington ESD agents to explain my situation was impossible until I found that service.

•I'm definitely not trying to lie, just want to make sure I explain it correctly.

I got fired for 'attitude problems' which was total BS but I still put that down on my Washington ESD application. Got approved after they did their investigation. The key is being consistent with what you report.

•How long did the investigation take? I need these benefits to start ASAP.

•About 2-3 weeks for them to make a decision. It felt like forever but wasn't too bad.

•Same here - consistency is everything with unemployment applications.

Also make sure you're filing your weekly claims on time even if your initial claim is still being processed. Missing those deadlines can cause delays in getting paid once you're approved.

•Good point, I'll make sure to do that. The whole system is so confusing.

•The weekly claims are super important - don't skip those!

If you run into issues reaching Washington ESD to clarify anything about your application, I had great success with Claimyr. They help you get through to actual agents instead of sitting on hold forever. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Thanks, I'll check that out. Getting through on the phone has been impossible so far.

•Never heard of that service but anything that helps get through to Washington ESD sounds useful.

•Yeah it's been a lifesaver when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status.

WASHINGTON ESD IS THE WORST when it comes to getting straight answers about applications. I spent HOURS trying to figure out what to put for my termination reason. System is so broken.

•It really is frustrating. Feels like they make it complicated on purpose.

•I feel your pain. The whole process is way more stressful than it needs to be.

One more thing - if your employer contests your claim and says you were fired for misconduct, Washington ESD will schedule a fact-finding interview. That's when you can explain your side about the safety concerns and provide any documentation you have.

•What happens if they don't believe my side of the story?

•If they deny your claim, you have the right to appeal the decision. The appeal process gives you another chance to present your case.

•Appeals can take a while though, so hopefully it doesn't come to that.

I put 'terminated' on mine without going into details and they still approved my claim. Sometimes keeping it simple works better.

•Did they ask for more details later?

Olivia Clark
•Nope, never heard anything more about it. Every case is different though.

Make sure you have your last day of work date correct too. That affects when your benefits can start. I messed that up on my first application.

LilMama23
•Good catch! I'll double check that date on my application.

•Yeah those dates are really important for calculating everything properly.

honestly the best advice is to just submit the application and see what happens. washington esd will ask for clarification if they need it. overthinking it wont help

•You're probably right. I'm definitely overthinking this whole thing.

Remember that being fired doesn't automatically disqualify you from unemployment benefits. Washington ESD looks at whether the termination was for misconduct or just poor performance. Performance issues usually don't disqualify you.

LilMama23
•That's reassuring. I was worried being fired meant I couldn't get benefits at all.

GamerGirl99
•Nope, lots of people who got fired still qualify for unemployment. It depends on the specific reasons.

When I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD about my application questions, someone recommended claimyr.com and it actually worked. Saved me hours of trying to call.

Just wanted to add that you should save copies of everything you submit to Washington ESD. Screenshots, emails, everything. Helps if there are any issues later.

Bottom line: put down what your employer told you was the reason, be honest, and don't stress too much about the wording. Washington ESD has seen it all before.
