What qualifies u for unemployment in Washington - confused about eligibility requirements

hey everyone, i got laid off last month from my retail job and trying to figure out if i qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. i worked there for about 8 months but only part time (like 25-30 hours a week). before that i had another job for 6 months but quit because my manager was being really difficult. do i meet the requirements? also heard something about needing to make a certain amount of money in your base period but not sure what that means. any help appreciated!

You'll likely qualify based on your recent layoff, but the job you quit might complicate things. Washington ESD looks at your total wages in what's called your base period - that's the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. You need to have earned at least $3,800 in your base period AND have worked in at least 2 quarters. Since you worked 8 months at your retail job, you should meet the work requirements.

ok that makes more sense about the base period thing. what about the job i quit though? will that hurt my chances?

0 coins

The quit could be an issue depending on Washington ESD's determination. If you quit without 'good cause' they might disqualify you. But since your most recent separation was a layoff (involuntary), that's usually what they focus on for eligibility.

I had a similar situation last year - quit one job then got laid off from the next one. Washington ESD approved my claim because the layoff was my most recent separation. Just be honest about everything when you file your application.

0 coins

that's reassuring to hear! did they ask you detailed questions about why you quit the earlier job?

0 coins

They did ask during the phone interview but since the layoff was more recent they focused on that. Just have documentation about your layoff ready.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask these questions directly, I recently discovered claimyr.com - they help you actually reach an agent by phone. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

0 coins

never heard of that before, does it actually work? calling Washington ESD is such a nightmare

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me - got connected to an actual person in about 20 minutes instead of spending all day trying to call. Really helpful when you need clarification on your specific situation.

0 coins

interesting, might have to try that if i run into issues with my claim

The basic requirements are pretty straightforward: you need to be unemployed through no fault of your own, meet the wage requirements, be able and available for work, and actively search for jobs. Since you were laid off that covers the 'no fault' part. Part-time work still counts toward your wage base as long as you hit those dollar minimums.

0 coins

what about the job search requirement? how many jobs do i need to apply to each week?

0 coins

You need to make at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. This can include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, or doing interviews. Make sure to document everything.

0 coins

wait i thought you had to work full time to get unemployment?? i was part time too before i got fired and someone told me i wouldnt qualify

0 coins

That's a common misconception. Part-time work absolutely counts as long as you meet the wage and quarter requirements. It's based on your total earnings, not whether you worked full or part-time.

0 coins

oh wow ok good to know! guess i should apply then

The Washington ESD website has a benefits calculator where you can estimate if you qualify and how much you might get. Just search for 'Washington unemployment calculator' and it should come up.

0 coins

oh thats helpful, ill check that out. thanks!

Don't forget you also have to be a US citizen or have work authorization, and you can't be receiving certain other benefits at the same time. Also if you're going to school full-time that can affect your eligibility since you need to be available for work.

0 coins

good point about school - im not in school right now so that shouldnt be an issue

0 coins

Just wanted to add - when you file make sure you have your Social Security card, ID, and employment information for all jobs in the past 18 months. Washington ESD will need employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation.

0 coins

thanks! do i need pay stubs or will they get wage info directly from employers?

0 coins

They get wage info from employers usually, but having your pay stubs can help if there are any discrepancies or missing information.

0 coins

One more thing - if Washington ESD determines you quit your previous job without good cause, they might impose a disqualification period. But this usually only affects benefits related to that specific job separation, not your entire claim if your most recent separation qualifies you.

0 coins

so even if they dont like that i quit the first job, i could still get benefits based on being laid off from the retail job?

0 coins

Exactly. The most recent separation is typically what determines your eligibility. The quit might affect your benefit calculation but shouldn't disqualify you entirely if the layoff was involuntary.

If you end up needing to talk to Washington ESD about your specific situation and can't get through on the phone, definitely check out that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Really made a difference for me when I had questions about my claim.

0 coins

yeah i might need that, tried calling yesterday and was on hold for 2 hours before giving up

0 coins

The wage requirement is currently $3,800 in your base period and you need wages in at least 2 quarters of that period. If you don't meet the standard base period requirements, they'll look at your alternate base period which uses more recent quarters.

0 coins

what if i barely miss the $3800? is there any wiggle room?

0 coins

Unfortunately no, it's a hard requirement. But if you don't qualify under the standard base period, they automatically check the alternate base period which might include more recent wages.

Also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them when you file your tax return. Just something to keep in mind for planning purposes.

0 coins

good to know, thanks for the heads up about taxes

The application process is all online now through SecureAccess Washington. Make sure you apply as soon as possible after your layoff since there's a waiting week and you want to get the process started.

0 coins

whats the waiting week mean?

0 coins

You have to serve one unpaid waiting week before you can start receiving benefits. So the sooner you apply, the sooner you can get through that waiting period.

this thread has been super helpful! i was so confused about the requirements but now i think i understand better

0 coins

same here! feeling much more confident about applying now

0 coins

One last tip - if you do get approved, make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week. Missing a week can cause delays and complications with your benefits.

0 coins

noted! when do you typically file the weekly claims?

0 coins

You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. I always do mine Sunday morning so I don't forget. Set a reminder on your phone!

0 coins

And remember you have to report ANY work or income during your weekly claims, even if it's just a few hours. Being honest about everything is crucial.

0 coins

what happens if you forget to report something small?

0 coins

It can create an overpayment situation where you have to pay money back. Better to report everything even if you're not sure whether it matters.

0 coins

The whole process can seem overwhelming at first but once you get your claim established it becomes pretty routine. Just stay on top of your weekly filings and job search requirements.

0 coins

thanks everyone for all the help! definitely going to apply this week

0 coins

Good luck with your application! Based on what you've described, you should qualify. Just be thorough and honest in your application and you should be fine.

0 coins

appreciate all the advice from everyone here, this community is awesome!

0 coins

Definitely apply sooner rather than later. The process can take a few weeks to get your first payment, especially if they need to do any additional verification of your employment history.

0 coins

will do, thanks again everyone!

0 coins

Just to summarize for anyone else reading this thread: you generally qualify if you lost your job through no fault of your own, meet the wage requirements ($3,800 in base period), are able and available for work, and actively search for jobs. The specific details of your work history will determine your exact eligibility and benefit amount.

perfect summary! bookmarking this thread for future reference
