How to qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington - lost my job last week
Hey everyone, I got laid off from my retail job last Friday and I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I worked there for about 8 months full-time but I'm not sure what the requirements are. Do I need to have worked for a certain amount of time? Also heard something about needing to be available for work - does that mean I can't go on vacation while collecting? Really stressed about this whole process and could use some guidance on the basics of how to qualify.

You'll need to meet Washington ESD's base year earnings requirement - basically you need to have earned enough wages in your base year (usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters). For 2025, you need at least $1,686 in your highest quarter and total base year earnings of at least 1.5 times your highest quarter. Since you worked 8 months full-time, you should be good on that front.

•Thanks! I think I should meet that - was making about $18/hour. What about the availability thing?

•You need to be able and available for work each week you claim. Short trips are usually okay but you'd need to report them on your weekly claim.

also make sure you were laid off or terminated through no fault of your own. if you quit or got fired for misconduct you won't qualify

•Yeah it was a layoff due to slow business, so I should be ok there.

The job search requirement is important too - you'll need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. Washington ESD can audit this so keep good records. Also register with WorkSourceWA within 4 weeks of filing your initial claim.

•What counts as a job search contact? Just applying online or do I need to do more?

•Applying for jobs, networking contacts, attending job fairs, informational interviews - lots of things count. Just document everything with dates and details.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I filed my claim last year. Spent hours on hold just to get basic eligibility questions answered. If you run into that problem, I discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get connected to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration trying to reach someone.

•Is that legit? Sounds almost too good to be true with how impossible it is to get through normally.

•Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Way better than hitting redial for hours.

•never heard of that but man do I hate trying to call Washington ESD, might check it out

Wait I'm confused about the base year thing - what if I just started working this year? I only started my job in March 2024 and got laid off in December. Do I not qualify?

•You might qualify under the alternate base year which uses the most recent 4 quarters. Washington ESD will check both automatically when you apply.

•Oh thank god, I was panicking thinking I wouldn't get anything.

Don't forget you can't collect unemployment if you're getting severance pay or vacation payouts during the same week. Washington ESD will reduce or eliminate your weekly benefit amount.

•I'm getting my unused vacation days paid out, does that mean I can't file right away?

•You can still file, just report the vacation pay on your weekly claims. They'll adjust your benefits accordingly.

this whole system is so confusing, why can't they just make it simple to understand what you need to qualify??

•I know it seems overwhelming but once you get through the initial application it's not too bad. The weekly claims are pretty straightforward.

•agreed, the hardest part is figuring out if you qualify in the first place

One more thing - make sure you file your claim as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. There's a one-week waiting period before benefits start, and you can't get benefits for weeks before you file your claim. The sooner you apply, the sooner that waiting week starts counting.

•Good to know! I was planning to wait until Monday but I'll file today instead.

•yeah don't wait, I made that mistake and lost out on like 2 weeks of benefits because I thought I had more time

Also be prepared for possible adjudication if there's anything unclear about your separation from work. Washington ESD might need to investigate and that can delay your benefits for weeks.

•What would cause adjudication? My layoff was pretty straightforward.

•Usually happens if your employer contests the claim or if there are discrepancies in the information. Since yours was a clear layoff you should be fine.

The Washington ESD website has a good eligibility quiz you can take before filing. Might help you feel more confident about whether you qualify before starting the actual application process.

•I'll definitely check that out, thanks for the tip!

Just remember that even if you qualify, your weekly benefit amount depends on your earnings during the base year. The maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is around $999 but most people get less than that.

Hattie Carson
•How do they calculate the weekly amount exactly?
0 coins
Adaline Wong
•It's based on your average weekly wage during your highest earning quarter, then they apply a formula. The Washington ESD calculator on their website can give you an estimate.

whatever you do don't lie on your application or weekly claims. washington esd will find out and you'll have to pay back everything plus penalties

Update on the Claimyr thing - I used it again last month when I had questions about my job search requirements and got through to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait. Definitely recommend it if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•how much does it cost though? seems like it would be expensive

•It's actually pretty reasonable considering how much time and frustration it saves. Way cheaper than missing work to sit on hold all day.

Make sure your employer doesn't fight your claim. Even with a layoff some employers will contest unemployment claims to keep their rates down.

•How would I know if they're contesting it?

•Washington ESD will notify you if there's a dispute and give you a chance to respond. Just be ready with documentation of your layoff.

One last tip - keep copies of everything you submit to Washington ESD. Applications, weekly claims, correspondence, everything. You never know when you might need to reference something later.

I qualified after working only 6 months so you should definitely be fine with 8 months. The Washington ESD system is actually pretty generous compared to some other states.

Final thought - consider this time as an opportunity to maybe find something better than retail. Use the WorkSourceWA resources for career exploration and training programs. Some are even approved for extended unemployment benefits.

•I've actually been thinking about that. Maybe this is a blessing in disguise to find something with better career prospects.

I tried that Claimyr service too after seeing it mentioned here - totally worth it when you actually need to speak with someone at Washington ESD. The phone system is just impossible otherwise.
