What is the minimum unemployment benefit amount in Washington ESD?
I'm trying to figure out what the minimum weekly unemployment benefit is in Washington state. I worked part-time for about 8 months last year making around $12/hour and I'm not sure if I'll even qualify or what the minimum amount would be if I do. Does anyone know what the lowest weekly benefit payment is from Washington ESD? I've been looking on their website but can't find a clear answer.

The minimum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $295 as of 2025. But you need to meet the earnings requirements first - you need at least $3,850 in your base year to qualify for any benefits at all.

•Thanks! So if I made more than $3,850 last year I should at least get $295 per week?

Amy Fleming
•Yes, as long as you meet all the other requirements like being able and available for work and actively job searching.

I think it might be higher than that now. Wasn't there an increase this year?

Amy Fleming
•No, $295 is still the current minimum. The maximum went up but not the minimum.

Alice Pierce
•Oh ok, thanks for clarifying that.

Just so you know, even if you qualify for the minimum, you still have to do all the weekly job search activities. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you have to log them in your WorkSourceWA account.

•What counts as a job search activity? I've never used WorkSourceWA before.

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, or taking career development classes. The WorkSourceWA site has a full list of what qualifies.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about your specific situation, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•How much does that cost? Seems like you shouldn't have to pay to talk to Washington ESD.

•I hear you, but after spending 3 days trying to get through I was willing to try anything. It actually worked and I got my questions answered in one call.

be careful about part time work history... sometimes they calculate it weird and you might not get what you expect

Juan Moreno
•What do you mean? How do they calculate it differently for part-time workers?
0 coins
Amy Fleming
•It's based on your highest quarter of earnings in your base year. Part-time doesn't matter as long as you earned enough total.

I got the minimum when I first filed and it was barely enough to cover rent. Make sure you're looking for full-time work if possible because $295 a week doesn't go very far these days.

•Yeah I'm definitely planning to look for full-time work. Did you have any issues with the job search requirements?

Beth Ford
•Not really, just make sure you keep good records of everything you do for job searching. Washington ESD can audit your activities.

Also make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week or you'll lose those benefits permanently. I learned that the hard way.

•When are weekly claims due? Is there a specific day?

Esteban Tate
•You can file them Sunday through Saturday for the previous week, but don't wait until the last minute. File as early in the week as possible.

The whole Washington ESD system is so confusing. I spent forever trying to figure out if I qualified and then when I applied it took 3 weeks to get approved.

•Same here! The website is not user-friendly at all.

•It's gotten better over the years but there's definitely still room for improvement.

One more thing - even at the minimum benefit level, you might be subject to federal taxes on your unemployment benefits. Keep that in mind when budgeting.
0 coins
Juan Moreno
•Do they automatically take taxes out or do I need to request that?
0 coins
Amy Fleming
•You can request to have 10% withheld for federal taxes when you file your initial claim or during your weekly claims.

If your claim gets stuck in adjudication like mine did, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier might be worth trying. I was waiting 4 weeks for them to review my work history and couldn't get anyone on the phone to explain what was happening.

Juan Moreno
•What is adjudication exactly? I keep seeing people mention it but don't understand what it means.

•It's when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim before they can approve it. Could be work history, reason for separation, or eligibility issues.

The $295 minimum is actually pretty decent compared to some other states. I have friends in other places who get way less.

•True, but cost of living here is also higher than a lot of other places.

•Fair point. Everything is relative I guess.

Make sure you understand the difference between being able and available vs. being on standby. If you're on temporary layoff you might be on standby status which has different requirements.
0 coins
Juan Moreno
•What's the difference? I thought you always had to be looking for work.
0 coins
Esteban Tate
•On standby you don't have to do job search activities because you're expected to return to your job within a certain timeframe.

Just applied last week and still waiting to hear back. The waiting is the worst part honestly.

Don't forget you can work part-time while collecting unemployment as long as you report it correctly. They'll reduce your benefit but you won't lose it completely if you stay under the earnings threshold.
0 coins
Juan Moreno
•What's the earnings threshold? How much can you make before they cut off benefits?
0 coins
Amy Fleming
•It's complicated but generally you can earn up to 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount before they start reducing it significantly.

The minimum benefit calculation is based on your earnings in your base year quarters. Even if you worked part-time, if you had one good quarter you might qualify for more than the minimum.
0 coins
Juan Moreno
•How do I find out which quarters they're using for my base year?
0 coins
Raul Neal
•It's usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters when you file. So if you file in January 2025, they'd look at January-September 2024.

I've been getting the minimum for 2 months now and it's definitely tight but manageable if you budget carefully. The key is applying for everything you can and keeping detailed records.

•Any tips for stretching the money further?

•Look into food assistance programs and utility bill help. There are resources out there to supplement unemployment benefits.

Another option if you can't get through to Washington ESD by phone is to use their online messaging system, but honestly it's pretty slow. I waited 5 days for a response to a simple question.
0 coins
Ivanna St. Pierre
•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. The online messaging is so slow and half the time they don't even answer your actual question.
0 coins
Christian Burns
•Yeah, getting a real person on the phone is definitely better when you need specific answers.

One last thing - if you get denied for any reason, you have the right to appeal. Don't just accept it if you think they made a mistake. The appeal process exists for a reason.
0 coins
Juan Moreno
•How long do you have to file an appeal?
0 coins
Sasha Reese
•30 days from the date of the determination letter. Don't wait until the last minute though.

Good luck with your claim! The process can be frustrating but once you get approved and get into the routine of filing weekly claims it gets much easier.

•Thanks everyone for all the helpful information! I feel much more prepared to apply now.
