What happens when you file unemployment with Washington ESD - complete timeline?
I just lost my job yesterday and need to file for unemployment benefits but I'm totally confused about what actually happens after I submit my application to Washington ESD. Like do they contact my employer right away? How long before I know if I'm approved? When do payments start? I've never had to do this before and feeling pretty overwhelmed about the whole process. Can someone walk me through what happens step by step when you file unemployment in Washington?

The process usually takes about 2-3 weeks from filing to your first payment if everything goes smoothly. Washington ESD will contact your employer to verify your separation reason within a few days of filing. You'll get a monetary determination letter showing your weekly benefit amount first, then an eligibility determination. Make sure you file your weekly claims every week even while waiting for approval.

•Thanks! Do I need to do anything while waiting or just file the weekly claims?

•Yes, keep filing weekly and start your job search activities right away. Washington requires 3 job contacts per week and you need to log them in WorkSource.

honestly the whole thing is a mess, took me 6 weeks to get my first payment and that was WITH calling them constantly. their phone system is terrible

•That's what I'm worried about. Did they tell you why it took so long?

•something about adjudication but they never explained it properly, just kept saying to wait

I had good luck using Claimyr to actually get through to Washington ESD when I needed to check my claim status. Their system automatically calls and holds your place in line so you don't have to sit there for hours. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Really saved me time and frustration.

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they don't ask for any personal info, just your phone number so they can call you back when an agent is available. Way better than trying to get through their main line.

•I was skeptical too but tried it last month when my claim got stuck. Actually got through to someone in like 20 minutes instead of calling all day.

Here's the basic timeline: File initial claim → Get confirmation number → Employer gets notice (2-3 days) → Monetary determination letter (5-7 days) → Eligibility determination (1-2 weeks) → First payment (if approved). BUT if there's any issue with your separation or work history, it goes to adjudication which can add 3-6 weeks.

•What kind of issues trigger adjudication? I was laid off due to company downsizing.

Javier Gomez
•Layoffs are usually straightforward, but if your employer contests it or there's any question about misconduct, quit vs fired, etc. then it goes to adjudication for investigation.

make sure you have all your employment info ready - last day worked, gross wages, reason for separation. washington esd website has a checklist of what you need before filing

Paolo Moretti
•Good point, I should gather all that stuff first. Do I need pay stubs or just the info?
0 coins
Emma Wilson
•just the info for filing but keep pay stubs in case they ask for verification later

One important thing - you can file online at esd.wa.gov or by phone, but online is usually faster and available 24/7. The phone lines get swamped on Mondays and after holidays. Also make sure to file in the first week you're unemployed, you can't backdate claims.

•Should I file today then since I just got laid off yesterday?

•Yes, file as soon as possible. Your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you became unemployed.

•Wait I thought you had to wait a week? That's what my friend told me

Amina Diop
•There's a one week waiting period before you get paid, but you still need to file right away to establish your claim.

the monetary determination shows your weekly benefit amount which is about half your average weekly wage up to the maximum. in 2025 i think the max is around $1015 per week but most people get way less than that
0 coins
Paolo Moretti
•How do they calculate the average weekly wage? Just from my last job or multiple jobs?
0 coins
Oliver Weber
•they look at your highest earning quarter in the base period which is like the first 4 of the last 5 quarters or something

Pro tip - create your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account before you file if you don't have one already. That's how you'll access your claim online and it can take a day or two to get verified. You'll be using this account for everything - filing weekly claims, checking status, viewing correspondence.

Paolo Moretti
•Is that different from the regular esd.wa.gov login?

Natasha Romanova
•Yes, SAW is the secure portal that connects to multiple state services including unemployment. Much more reliable than the old system.

Don't panic if your claim shows 'under review' or 'adjudication in progress' - it's super common and doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem. Mine showed that for 3 weeks and then just got approved out of nowhere. The worst part is not being able to get anyone on the phone to explain what's happening.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about - being stuck in limbo with no information.

•That's when I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Finally got to talk to an actual person who could see what was happening with my claim.

IMPORTANT: You have to file your weekly claim every week even if your initial claim isn't approved yet. If you miss filing a week you lose that week's benefits permanently. The system opens Sunday morning and you have until Saturday night to file each week.

•What if I forget one week? Can I file late?
0 coins
Malik Thomas
•You can file late but only within 4 weeks and you need a good reason. Better to set a reminder on your phone to file every week.

the job search requirement is 3 job contacts per week and you log them in WorkSource WA. contacts can be applications, interviews, networking events, career fairs etc. keep detailed records because they do audit people

Paolo Moretti
•Do I have to start job searching immediately or can I wait until I'm approved?
0 coins
Emma Wilson
•start immediately, the requirement begins the week you file your claim

Another heads up - Washington ESD will send you a debit card (KeyBank) for your payments unless you set up direct deposit. The card can take 7-10 days to arrive after your first payment is issued. Direct deposit is faster but takes 1-2 business days to process initially.

Paolo Moretti
•Can I change to direct deposit after I already filed?
0 coins
Javier Gomez
•Yes, you can change payment method anytime through your online account. Just log into SAW and update your payment preferences.

watch out for the tax implications too. unemployment benefits are taxable income and they don't automatically withhold taxes. you can request 10% federal withholding when you file your weekly claims but you might still owe at tax time
0 coins
Paolo Moretti
•Ugh I didn't even think about taxes. Should I have them withhold or just save money myself?
0 coins
Oliver Weber
•depends on your tax situation but i'd rather have them withhold than get hit with a big tax bill next year

If you're union, make sure to report any union benefits or SUB (supplemental unemployment benefits) pay when filing your weekly claims. These can affect your eligibility or benefit amount. Also report any part-time work - you might still be eligible for partial benefits.

Paolo Moretti
•I'm not union but good to know about part-time work. Can I do freelance work while collecting?
0 coins
Amina Diop
•Yes but you must report all earnings. They'll deduct from your weekly benefit amount based on how much you earn.

The whole process is honestly pretty stressful when you're doing it for the first time. My advice is file as soon as possible, keep detailed records of everything, and don't hesitate to call if you have questions. Just be prepared for long wait times unless you use something like Claimyr to help get through.

•Good luck! Most claims do get approved eventually, it's just the waiting that's hard.

One last thing - if you get denied for any reason, you have 30 days to appeal. Don't give up if the initial decision isn't what you expected. The appeal process gives you a chance to present your case to an administrative law judge.

Paolo Moretti
•Hopefully I won't need to appeal but good to know I have options.

•Yeah most layoffs are pretty straightforward but it's good to know your rights just in case.

The uncertainty is definitely the worst part. Just remember that thousands of people go through this process every week and most get their benefits eventually. Keep filing those weekly claims and stay on top of your job search activities.

Summary for OP: File immediately online, keep filing weekly claims, start job search right away, expect 2-3 weeks for approval if no complications, and don't be afraid to call for help if you get stuck. You've got this!
