What happens when unemployment runs out - Washington ESD benefit exhaustion options?

My regular UI benefits are about to run out next week after 26 weeks and I'm honestly panicking. I've been job searching but haven't found anything yet that pays enough to cover my bills. Does Washington ESD have any extended benefits or what am I supposed to do? I keep seeing conflicting info online about whether there are programs after regular unemployment ends. Anyone been through this recently?

Unfortunately when your 26 weeks of regular UI runs out, that's it for now. There used to be extended benefits during the pandemic but those ended. You might qualify for other assistance programs though.

That's what I was afraid of. Do you know what other programs might be available? I'm really stressed about this.

Check with DSHS for food assistance and possibly cash aid. Also look into local food banks and utility assistance programs while you keep job searching.

The 26 weeks is the maximum for regular unemployment in Washington state. There's no automatic extension anymore. You'll need to look into other safety net programs or consider taking any job to get some income flowing.

I've been trying to reach Washington ESD to ask about this but can never get through on the phone. It's so frustrating.

If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, I recently used claimyr.com to get through. They helped me connect with an agent when I couldn't get through myself. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Interesting, I've never heard of that service. Does it actually work for getting through to Washington ESD?

0 coins

I went through this exact situation 6 months ago. When my benefits exhausted, I had to file for TANF and food stamps through DSHS. It's not much but it helps bridge the gap. Also make sure you're registered with WorkSource for job search assistance.

0 coins

How long did the TANF application take? I'm worried about the gap between when unemployment ends and other benefits start.

0 coins

It took about 3 weeks for me to get approved and start receiving TANF. I'd apply NOW before your UI runs out to minimize the gap.

0 coins

this is why the unemployment system is broken!! 26 weeks isn't enough time to find a decent job in this economy. other states have better programs

0 coins

I understand the frustration, but Washington actually has one of the better unemployment systems compared to many states. The benefit amounts are higher than most places.

0 coins

higher amounts don't help when they cut you off after 26 weeks and there's no extension. I've been looking for 5 months!

0 coins

Check if Washington has any state-funded extended benefits available. Sometimes they trigger on during high unemployment periods.

0 coins

Washington hasn't triggered extended benefits in several years. The unemployment rate would need to be much higher than it currently is.

0 coins

That's disappointing. I thought I read somewhere that there might be state programs available.

0 coins

I'm in the same boat - my benefits end in 2 weeks. Been applying everywhere but nothing yet. This is really scary.

0 coins

It's terrifying isn't it? I never thought I'd be in this situation. Have you looked into the DSHS programs yet?

0 coins

Not yet but I need to. I keep hoping I'll find something before my benefits run out but I'm running out of time.

When your regular UI exhausts, you should immediately apply for SNAP (food stamps) and potentially TANF if you have dependents. Also check with 211 for local assistance programs - they often have emergency rent and utility help.

0 coins

Thank you, that's really helpful. I'll call 211 tomorrow. Do you know how much SNAP typically provides?

0 coins

SNAP amounts vary based on household size and income. For a single person with no income, it's around $200-250 per month currently.

0 coins

Make sure you keep certifying that you're looking for work even after benefits end. Sometimes if extended benefits become available later, you need to show you were actively searching.

0 coins

Wait, I still need to file weekly claims even after my benefits run out? That doesn't make sense.

0 coins

No, you don't need to file weekly claims after exhaustion. But you should keep documenting your job search activities just in case.

0 coins

I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it really did help me get through to Washington ESD. Might be worth trying if you have specific questions about your claim.

0 coins

Good to know it actually works. I might try that to see if there are any other options I don't know about.

0 coins

Same here, Claimyr got me connected when I couldn't get through myself. The agent was able to explain some programs I hadn't heard of.

0 coins

Don't forget about gig work to bridge the gap. Uber, DoorDash, TaskRabbit, etc. It's not ideal but it's income while you search for something permanent.

0 coins

I've thought about that but I'm worried it might affect other benefits I might qualify for. Do you know if gig income counts against TANF or SNAP?

0 coins

Gig income does count as income for SNAP and TANF calculations, but you can still qualify with some earnings. It's usually better to have some income than none.

0 coins

check your local churches and community centers too. lots of them have food pantries and sometimes emergency assistance programs

0 coins

That's a good idea. I never thought about checking with churches. I'm not religious but if they help people in need...

0 coins

most don't care if you're religious or not. they just want to help people who are struggling

0 coins

Have you looked into vocational rehabilitation services? If you've been unemployed for a while, they might help with retraining for a different field.

0 coins

I haven't heard of that. Is that through Washington ESD or a different agency?

0 coins

It's through the Department of Social and Health Services. They have programs for people who need job training or retraining.

0 coins

This happened to my sister last year. She ended up taking a part-time job at a grocery store just to have some income while she kept looking for something in her field. It wasn't great but it helped.

0 coins

How long did it take her to find something in her field? I'm worried about getting stuck in a low-paying job.

0 coins

It took about 4 months but she eventually found something good. The grocery store job gave her flexibility to interview during the day.

0 coins

Whatever you do, don't panic. I know it's scary but there are resources available. The most important thing is to apply for other assistance programs right away so there's no gap.

0 coins

Thank you for the encouragement. I'm trying not to panic but it's hard when you don't know how you're going to pay rent next month.

0 coins

I totally understand. Just take it one step at a time. Apply for SNAP and TANF tomorrow, then focus on the job search. You'll get through this.

0 coins

Make sure you're also checking with your county's social services department. They often have additional programs beyond the state ones.

0 coins

I'll do that. Every bit of help counts right now. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

0 coins

Also check with the Salvation Army and United Way in your area. They often have emergency assistance programs too.

0 coins

Been there, it sucks. Just remember that this is temporary. Keep applying for jobs and take whatever help you can get to survive until you find something.

0 coins

Thank you. Sometimes you just need to hear that it's temporary and you'll get through it. I really appreciate everyone's help and suggestions.

0 coins

You're going to be okay. It might take a while but you'll find something. Just don't give up.
