Washington ESD unemployment benefits ending next month - what happens when unemployment runs out?

My regular UI benefits through Washington ESD are going to run out in about 3 weeks and I'm starting to panic. I've been getting $742 a week for the past 22 weeks but my benefit year doesn't end until May. Does Washington automatically extend benefits or do I need to apply for something else? I'm still actively job searching but haven't found anything yet. What exactly happens when your 26 weeks of unemployment runs out? Do the payments just stop or is there another program I can apply for?

Unfortunately when your regular unemployment benefits run out in Washington, that's it unless you qualify for a new claim. There's no automatic extension like there was during COVID. You would need to have worked enough in the past year to qualify for a new benefit year, which it sounds like you probably haven't since you've been on unemployment.

So I just get cut off completely? That's terrifying. I thought there were extended benefits or something.

0 coins

Yeah, extended benefits only kick in during high unemployment periods and Washington's unemployment rate isn't high enough right now to trigger them.

0 coins

same boat here, my benefits ran out last month and it was a shock when the payments just stopped. you might want to look into other assistance programs like SNAP or housing assistance to help bridge the gap

0 coins

How did you manage after they stopped? Did you find work or are you getting by on other programs?

0 coins

still looking for work but yeah had to apply for food assistance and got help with rent through a local program

You should contact Washington ESD directly to discuss your options. Sometimes there are programs or extensions available that aren't widely advertised. I had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually get through to an agent when I was facing a similar situation. They have a service that helps you reach ESD representatives without waiting on hold for hours. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

I've tried calling ESD so many times but can never get through. How does that Claimyr thing work exactly?

0 coins

It basically calls for you and holds your place in line, then connects you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of trying to get through on my own.

0 coins

That sounds too good to be true. How much does something like that cost?

0 coins

Check if you've earned enough wages to qualify for a new benefit year! If you worked at all during your unemployment (even part-time), those wages might be enough to establish a new claim. You need at least $3,850 in covered wages during your base period.

0 coins

I did some gig work for about 6 weeks earlier this year but it wasn't much. Maybe $2,000 total. Would that count toward a new claim?

0 coins

It depends on if it was covered employment. Gig work usually isn't unless you were classified as an employee rather than independent contractor.

0 coins

$2,000 wouldn't be enough anyway. You need at least $3,850 in the highest quarter of your base period to qualify for minimum benefits.

0 coins

This is why the unemployment system is broken! 26 weeks isn't enough time to find a decent job in this market. They expect people to just take any minimum wage job rather than find something that matches their skills and experience.

0 coins

I mean, at some point you have to take what's available though. Benefits aren't meant to last forever.

0 coins

Easy to say when you're not the one facing homelessness because you can't find work that pays enough to survive.

0 coins

I've been applying to everything but either get no response or they want to pay $15/hour for jobs that required $25/hour experience just two years ago.

0 coins

Have you looked into WorkSource? They sometimes have job training programs that come with income support while you're in training. Might be worth checking out if regular job searching isn't working.

0 coins

I registered with WorkSource when I first filed for unemployment but haven't really used their services much. What kind of training programs do they offer?

0 coins

Depends on your area but I've seen everything from healthcare certifications to truck driving to IT boot camps. The good ones have waiting lists though.

0 coins

Just went through this myself. When my benefits ran out I was devastated but it actually motivated me to be less picky about jobs. Found work within 2 weeks of my last payment. Sometimes you need that push.

0 coins

What kind of work did you end up taking? Was it in your field or did you have to switch industries?

0 coins

Had to switch. I was in marketing but took a customer service job. Pay is lower but at least I'm working again and can keep looking for something better.

0 coins

This is exactly the problem - forcing people into underemployment instead of giving them time to find appropriate work.

0 coins

Before you panic completely, definitely try to reach an ESD agent to confirm your exact situation. I used that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier and found out I had options I didn't know about. Sometimes there are state programs or training opportunities that can provide support even after regular UI runs out.

0 coins

I'm definitely going to try that service. At this point I'll try anything to avoid just being cut off with no income.

0 coins

Let us know how it goes! I might need to try that too since my benefits are ending in a couple months.

0 coins

Look into Disaster Unemployment Assistance or Trade Adjustment Assistance if either applies to your situation. DUA is for people affected by disasters and TAA is for people whose jobs were lost due to foreign trade. Long shots but worth checking.

0 coins

I don't think either of those apply to me. My job was eliminated due to budget cuts, nothing to do with disasters or trade.

0 coins

Yeah, those are pretty specific programs. Most people don't qualify but I always mention them just in case.

0 coins

The reality is that most people just have to figure it out when benefits end. Apply for other assistance programs, lean on family and friends, take temporary work, whatever it takes. It sucks but that's the system we have.

0 coins

I don't have family to help and my savings are already gone. This is really scary.

0 coins

Check with local churches and community organizations. Many have emergency assistance programs for people in your situation.

0 coins

Make sure you're doing everything required for your job search! If you're not meeting the requirements they can disqualify you before your benefits even run out naturally. You need to be applying to at least 3 jobs per week and keeping a log.

0 coins

I've been applying to way more than 3 jobs a week and keeping detailed records. That's not the issue.

0 coins

Good, just wanted to make sure. Some people don't realize they can lose benefits early for not meeting job search requirements.

0 coins

Consider looking into temp agencies. They often have immediate placement and while the work might not be permanent, it can provide income while you continue looking for something better.

0 coins

I've registered with a few temp agencies but they mostly have warehouse and factory work which I physically can't do due to a back injury.

0 coins

Try looking for office temp work specifically. There are agencies that specialize in administrative and clerical positions.

0 coins

One more thing - if you do manage to get through to ESD, ask about Shared Work programs. Some employers participate in programs where they reduce hours instead of laying people off, and you can get partial unemployment benefits. It's not common but worth asking about if you're exploring all options.

0 coins

That sounds like it would be for people who still have jobs though. I was completely laid off.

0 coins

True, it's for people with reduced hours rather than full layoffs. But good to know all the programs that exist.

0 coins

The job market is brutal right now. I've been out of work for 8 months and my benefits ran out 3 months ago. Still applying everywhere but getting nowhere. You're not alone in this struggle.

0 coins

How are you surviving without benefits? This is exactly what I'm afraid of.

0 coins

Food banks, help from friends, sold some stuff, picked up odd jobs here and there. Not gonna lie, it's been really hard.

0 coins

Have you tried that Claimyr thing others mentioned? Maybe there are programs you don't know about.

0 coins

Check your benefit year end date on your ESD account. If your benefit year is ending soon, you might be able to file a new claim if you've worked at all since your original claim started, even if it was just temporary or part-time work.

0 coins

My benefit year doesn't end until May, so I don't think I can file a new claim yet. It's just that I'm running out of weeks.

0 coins

Right, you can't file a new claim until your benefit year ends OR you have enough new wages to qualify. Sounds like neither applies to your situation.

0 coins

Don't forget about state and local assistance programs beyond just unemployment. Emergency rental assistance, utility help, food programs - there's more help available than just UI benefits.

0 coins

Do you know where I can find information about these programs? I don't even know where to start looking.

0 coins

Start with 211 - just dial 2-1-1 from any phone and they can connect you with local assistance programs. Also check your county's website for emergency assistance programs.

0 coins

The most important thing is to start preparing now rather than waiting until your last payment. Line up other resources, apply for assistance programs, intensify your job search, maybe consider taking something temporary even if it's not ideal.

0 coins

You're right, I need to stop hoping something will work out and start being more proactive about preparing for when the benefits end.

0 coins

That's the smartest approach. The people who struggle most are the ones who wait until their last check to start planning.

0 coins

I actually used Claimyr recently when I needed to talk to someone at ESD about my claim status. It really does work - got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of calling all day. Might be worth trying to see if there are any options you haven't considered.

0 coins

That's the second time someone has mentioned that service. I'm definitely going to try it tomorrow.

0 coins

Yeah, I was skeptical too but it actually saved me a lot of frustration. The agent was able to explain some options I didn't know existed.
