Can you extend unemployment benefits in Washington ESD - running out soon
My regular UI benefits are about to run out in 2 weeks and I'm still looking for work. I've been on unemployment for about 22 weeks now and haven't found anything stable yet. Does Washington ESD have any programs to extend benefits beyond the regular 26 weeks? I keep hearing different things from people but can't find clear info on the Washington ESD website. Has anyone been through this process recently? What are my options?

There's no automatic extension right now like there was during covid. Regular UI in Washington is 26 weeks max unless there's special federal programs which there aren't currently

•That's what I was afraid of. So basically I'm just out of luck after 26 weeks?

•Pretty much, unless you qualify for a new claim if you worked enough after your original claim started

You might be able to file a new claim if you worked during your benefit year and earned enough wages. You need at least $3,850 in covered wages in your base period to qualify for a new claim.

•I did some gig work but probably didn't make that much. How do I check if I qualify?

•You can try calling Washington ESD to check your wage records, but good luck getting through. The phone lines are always busy.

•I had this same issue last month trying to reach someone at Washington ESD about my wage records. Spent hours calling and either got busy signals or got hung up on after waiting forever. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration!

Wait I thought there were extended benefits available? My friend said something about EB program

•Extended Benefits (EB) only kicks in when unemployment rates hit certain triggers. Washington hasn't had EB activated in years because our unemployment rate hasn't been high enough.

•oh that makes sense, I was getting confused

This system is so frustrating!! I'm in the same boat, benefits ending next month and I've applied to like 200 jobs with barely any responses. How are we supposed to survive?

•I feel you. Have you been keeping track of all your job search activities? Make sure you're meeting the 3 job search activities per week requirement in case they audit you.

•Yeah I've been documenting everything in WorkSourceWA but it's still scary thinking about no income

Can you apply for other benefits when UI runs out? Like food stamps or something?

•That's DSHS territory, not Washington ESD. You'd apply through Washington Connection for food assistance, medical coverage, etc. Different department entirely.

•Thanks, I didn't know they were separate

Update: I tried calling Washington ESD this morning to check my wage records but after 45 minutes on hold I got disconnected. This is so frustrating when you're trying to figure out if you can file a new claim.

•Seriously try Claimyr if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD. It's the only way I've been able to get through consistently. Worth every penny when you're dealing with something this important.

•How does that even work? Sounds too good to be true

•It basically calls for you and waits in the queue, then connects you when an agent picks up. Way better than sitting there for hours yourself.

I went through this last year. Ended up having to file a new claim because I had worked part time during my benefit year. The process was confusing but I did qualify for a new claim with lower weekly benefit amount based on my recent wages.

•How long did it take to process your new claim? I'm worried about gaps in benefits

•Took about 3 weeks to get approved, but then I had to serve a new waiting week too. So plan for at least a month with no benefits.

The whole system is broken. They make it so hard to get help when you need it most. I've been trying to reach someone for weeks about my situation

•Have you tried the live chat on the Washington ESD website? Sometimes that's easier than calling

•The live chat is never available when I check. Always says agents are busy.

Just wanted to say I used Claimyr last week and finally got my wage record question answered. The agent was able to tell me I don't qualify for a new claim but at least now I know for sure instead of wondering.

•How much did it cost? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it

•I'd rather not say the exact amount but it was definitely worth it for peace of mind. Check their website for current pricing.

OP what industry are you in? Some fields have better job prospects right now than others

•I'm in retail management but also looking at customer service roles. The market seems pretty competitive right now.

•Retail is tough right now with all the layoffs. Have you considered temporary agencies? At least it's income while you look for permanent work.

Make sure you're not missing any job search requirements while dealing with this. Washington ESD can still disqualify you for not meeting the 3 activities per week even if your benefits are about to end.

•Good point, I've been keeping up with the job search log but I should double check I'm meeting all requirements

This happened to my sister last year and she ended up having to take a minimum wage job just to avoid being homeless. The system doesn't care about people who can't find work in their field.

•That's harsh but unfortunately true. Sometimes you have to take what you can get.

I think there might be some retraining programs through WorkSource if you want to learn new skills? Not sure if that helps with benefits though

•Training programs don't extend your UI benefits, but some programs do provide additional support while you're training. Worth looking into if you qualify.

Bottom line is if you don't qualify for a new claim, you're done after 26 weeks unless federal extensions get passed which isn't happening anytime soon. Start planning for life after benefits now.

•Yeah I'm starting to accept that reality. Thanks everyone for the advice, at least now I know what to expect.
