Can you apply for an extension on unemployment through Washington ESD?

My regular UI benefits are about to run out next month and I'm still looking for work. I've been hearing different things about whether you can get extensions on unemployment benefits. Does Washington ESD offer any kind of extension programs? I'm worried about what happens when my 26 weeks are up since I haven't found anything yet despite applying everywhere. Has anyone been through this process recently?

Regular UI in Washington is 26 weeks max. There aren't automatic extensions like there were during the pandemic. Extended Benefits (EB) only kick in during high unemployment periods and we're not there right now.

So there's literally nothing available once my 26 weeks are done? That seems crazy

0 coins

You might qualify for other programs like SNAP or temporary assistance but unemployment extensions aren't available right now

0 coins

same boat here, mine runs out in 3 weeks and washington esd website doesn't show any extension options when i log in

0 coins

Have you tried calling them to ask? I can never get through on the phone

0 coins

tried calling like 50 times, just get busy signals or hung up on

0 coins

I actually found a way to get through to Washington ESD agents quickly. There's a service called Claimyr that helps you connect with agents when you need to speak with someone. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need definitive answers about extensions.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. Is it legit or one of those scam things?

0 coins

It's legitimate - claimyr.com. I used it last month when I had issues with my adjudication and got through to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of calling for hours

0 coins

That actually sounds really helpful. I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status

0 coins

The Extended Benefits program hasn't been triggered in Washington since 2020. It only activates when the state unemployment rate hits certain thresholds and stays there for consecutive periods. Right now our unemployment rate is too low to qualify.

0 coins

What are those thresholds exactly? Just curious how close we might be

0 coins

State unemployment rate needs to be 6.5% or higher for 13 weeks, or 20% higher than the same period in the previous two years. We're nowhere near those numbers currently

0 coins

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!! 26 weeks isn't enough time to find decent work in this economy. Other states have better programs than Washington

0 coins

Most states have the same 26 week limit. The federal extensions during COVID were temporary emergency measures

0 coins

well they should bring them back because people are still struggling

0 coins

You should definitely confirm this with Washington ESD directly though. Rules can change and sometimes there are special circumstances or programs that aren't widely advertised.

0 coins

That's why I was hoping to talk to someone there but getting through is impossible

0 coins

That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. When you really need to speak with an agent, it's worth using a service that can get you connected quickly

0 coins

i think there might be some kind of emergency extension available but you have to apply for it separately, not sure tho

0 coins

There's no emergency extension program currently available in Washington. You might be thinking of the pandemic-era programs that ended in 2021

0 coins

oh ok nevermind then, thought i heard something about it

0 coins

Your best bet is to make sure you're maximizing your job search efforts and documenting everything properly. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they do audit these records.

0 coins

I've been doing way more than 3 per week and keeping detailed records. Still no luck finding anything

0 coins

That's good - keep those records. You might also want to look into retraining programs through WorkSource if your field is particularly challenging right now

0 coins

Has anyone looked into the Trade Adjustment Assistance program? I heard that might provide extended benefits if your job loss was due to foreign trade impacts.

0 coins

TAA is very specific - your employer has to be certified as trade-affected and you have to be enrolled in approved training. It's not a general extension program

0 coins

Ah ok, that doesn't apply to my situation then. Thanks for clarifying

0 coins

So it sounds like the consensus is that there really aren't any extensions available right now. That's pretty depressing but I guess I need to plan accordingly.

0 coins

I'd still recommend calling Washington ESD to confirm your specific situation. There might be details about your claim that could affect your options

0 coins

good luck getting through on the phone though, seriously

0 coins

Again, that's where Claimyr comes in handy. When you absolutely need to speak with an agent, it's worth using a service that can actually get you connected

0 coins

Check with your local WorkSource office too. Even if there aren't UI extensions, they might have other resources or programs that could help bridge the gap while you're job searching.

0 coins

That's a good idea. I haven't been to WorkSource yet but maybe they have some options I don't know about

0 coins

They definitely do - emergency assistance programs, food assistance, sometimes even temporary job placement programs

0 coins

This whole system is broken. 26 weeks and then you're just cut off? What are people supposed to do?

0 coins

I understand the frustration but the system is designed to be temporary assistance while you look for work, not long-term support

0 coins

well maybe the design is wrong when people can't find work in 26 weeks

0 coins

Have you looked into Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation? I thought that was still available.

0 coins

PEUC ended in September 2021. All the pandemic-era unemployment programs have been discontinued

0 coins

Oh wow, I had no idea. Shows how out of touch I am with this stuff

0 coins

so basically we're all screwed when our benefits run out unless we find jobs fast

0 coins

That's why it's important to treat job searching like a full-time job while you're receiving benefits. The 26 weeks can go by quickly

0 coins

easier said than done when nobody's hiring or they want experience i don't have

0 coins

I went through this exact situation last year. When my benefits ended, I had to apply for state assistance programs and food stamps. It's not ideal but there are other safety nets available.

0 coins

How was that process? Were you able to get approved for other assistance?

0 coins

Yes, but it took a while and the amounts are much lower than UI. Better than nothing though

0 coins

For what it's worth, I'd definitely recommend using Claimyr to get a definitive answer from Washington ESD about your specific situation. Sometimes there are programs or options that aren't well-publicized, and an agent can review your claim history to see if you qualify for anything.

0 coins

At this point I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for the suggestion about Claimyr

0 coins

Yeah I'm going to check that out too. Need to get some answers about my claim status anyway

0 coins

Make sure you're filing your weekly claims all the way until your benefits are exhausted. Don't stop filing just because you think you're running out of time.

0 coins

Good point, I'll keep filing until Washington ESD tells me I can't anymore

0 coins

Exactly. Sometimes there are small adjustments or additional payments that can extend things by a week or two

0 coins

This thread is really helpful. I'm in week 20 of my claim so I need to start planning for what happens after week 26. Sounds like the answer is 'not much' unfortunately.

0 coins

Use these next 6 weeks wisely. Ramp up your job search efforts and start looking into other assistance programs now so you're not scrambling later

0 coins

Will do. Better to be prepared than surprised when the benefits stop

0 coins

thanks everyone for the info, this is exactly what i needed to know even though it's not what i wanted to hear

0 coins

Same here. At least now I know what to expect and can plan accordingly

0 coins

Knowledge is power, even when it's disappointing news. Good luck with your job search!

0 coins

UPDATE: I'm going to try that Claimyr service to get through to Washington ESD and ask about my specific situation. Will report back if I learn anything new about extensions or other options.

0 coins

Great idea! Even if extensions aren't available, they might have other suggestions or resources specific to your situation

0 coins

definitely want to hear how that goes, might try it myself

0 coins

Please do update us! We're all in similar situations and could use any additional info you get

0 coins

Same here, really hoping you find out something useful! I'm in a similar situation and could really use some good news about potential options beyond the standard 26 weeks.
