Can you apply for an extension on unemployment through Washington ESD?
My regular UI benefits are about to run out next month and I'm still looking for work. I've been hearing different things about whether you can get extensions on unemployment benefits. Does Washington ESD offer any kind of extension programs? I'm worried about what happens when my 26 weeks are up since I haven't found anything yet despite applying everywhere. Has anyone been through this process recently?

Regular UI in Washington is 26 weeks max. There aren't automatic extensions like there were during the pandemic. Extended Benefits (EB) only kick in during high unemployment periods and we're not there right now.

•So there's literally nothing available once my 26 weeks are done? That seems crazy

•You might qualify for other programs like SNAP or temporary assistance but unemployment extensions aren't available right now

•Have you tried calling them to ask? I can never get through on the phone

•tried calling like 50 times, just get busy signals or hung up on

I actually found a way to get through to Washington ESD agents quickly. There's a service called Claimyr that helps you connect with agents when you need to speak with someone. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need definitive answers about extensions.

•Never heard of that before. Is it legit or one of those scam things?

•It's legitimate - claimyr.com. I used it last month when I had issues with my adjudication and got through to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of calling for hours

•That actually sounds really helpful. I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status

The Extended Benefits program hasn't been triggered in Washington since 2020. It only activates when the state unemployment rate hits certain thresholds and stays there for consecutive periods. Right now our unemployment rate is too low to qualify.
0 coins
Connor Murphy
•What are those thresholds exactly? Just curious how close we might be
0 coins
Amina Diallo
•State unemployment rate needs to be 6.5% or higher for 13 weeks, or 20% higher than the same period in the previous two years. We're nowhere near those numbers currently

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!! 26 weeks isn't enough time to find decent work in this economy. Other states have better programs than Washington

•Most states have the same 26 week limit. The federal extensions during COVID were temporary emergency measures

Oliver Schulz
•well they should bring them back because people are still struggling

You should definitely confirm this with Washington ESD directly though. Rules can change and sometimes there are special circumstances or programs that aren't widely advertised.

•That's why I was hoping to talk to someone there but getting through is impossible

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. When you really need to speak with an agent, it's worth using a service that can get you connected quickly

i think there might be some kind of emergency extension available but you have to apply for it separately, not sure tho

•There's no emergency extension program currently available in Washington. You might be thinking of the pandemic-era programs that ended in 2021

•oh ok nevermind then, thought i heard something about it

Your best bet is to make sure you're maximizing your job search efforts and documenting everything properly. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they do audit these records.

Connor Murphy
•I've been doing way more than 3 per week and keeping detailed records. Still no luck finding anything
0 coins
Yara Sayegh
•That's good - keep those records. You might also want to look into retraining programs through WorkSource if your field is particularly challenging right now

Has anyone looked into the Trade Adjustment Assistance program? I heard that might provide extended benefits if your job loss was due to foreign trade impacts.

Amina Diallo
•TAA is very specific - your employer has to be certified as trade-affected and you have to be enrolled in approved training. It's not a general extension program

Paolo Conti
•Ah ok, that doesn't apply to my situation then. Thanks for clarifying

Connor Murphy
So it sounds like the consensus is that there really aren't any extensions available right now. That's pretty depressing but I guess I need to plan accordingly.

•I'd still recommend calling Washington ESD to confirm your specific situation. There might be details about your claim that could affect your options

•good luck getting through on the phone though, seriously

•Again, that's where Claimyr comes in handy. When you absolutely need to speak with an agent, it's worth using a service that can actually get you connected

Check with your local WorkSource office too. Even if there aren't UI extensions, they might have other resources or programs that could help bridge the gap while you're job searching.

Connor Murphy
•That's a good idea. I haven't been to WorkSource yet but maybe they have some options I don't know about
0 coins
Javier Mendoza
•They definitely do - emergency assistance programs, food assistance, sometimes even temporary job placement programs

This whole system is broken. 26 weeks and then you're just cut off? What are people supposed to do?
0 coins
Natasha Kuznetsova
•I understand the frustration but the system is designed to be temporary assistance while you look for work, not long-term support
0 coins
Oliver Schulz
•well maybe the design is wrong when people can't find work in 26 weeks

Have you looked into Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation? I thought that was still available.

Amina Diallo
•PEUC ended in September 2021. All the pandemic-era unemployment programs have been discontinued

•Oh wow, I had no idea. Shows how out of touch I am with this stuff

so basically we're all screwed when our benefits run out unless we find jobs fast

Yara Sayegh
•That's why it's important to treat job searching like a full-time job while you're receiving benefits. The 26 weeks can go by quickly

•easier said than done when nobody's hiring or they want experience i don't have

I went through this exact situation last year. When my benefits ended, I had to apply for state assistance programs and food stamps. It's not ideal but there are other safety nets available.
0 coins
Connor Murphy
•How was that process? Were you able to get approved for other assistance?
0 coins
Malik Davis
•Yes, but it took a while and the amounts are much lower than UI. Better than nothing though

For what it's worth, I'd definitely recommend using Claimyr to get a definitive answer from Washington ESD about your specific situation. Sometimes there are programs or options that aren't well-publicized, and an agent can review your claim history to see if you qualify for anything.

Connor Murphy
•At this point I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for the suggestion about Claimyr

Paolo Conti
•Yeah I'm going to check that out too. Need to get some answers about my claim status anyway

Make sure you're filing your weekly claims all the way until your benefits are exhausted. Don't stop filing just because you think you're running out of time.
0 coins
Connor Murphy
•Good point, I'll keep filing until Washington ESD tells me I can't anymore
0 coins
Isabella Santos
•Exactly. Sometimes there are small adjustments or additional payments that can extend things by a week or two

This thread is really helpful. I'm in week 20 of my claim so I need to start planning for what happens after week 26. Sounds like the answer is 'not much' unfortunately.

•Use these next 6 weeks wisely. Ramp up your job search efforts and start looking into other assistance programs now so you're not scrambling later

•Will do. Better to be prepared than surprised when the benefits stop
