How to get an extension on unemployment benefits from Washington ESD?
My regular UI benefits are about to run out in two weeks and I'm wondering if there's any way to get an extension on unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've been looking for work but the job market is still tough in my field. I know they used to have extended benefits during COVID but I'm not sure what's available now. Has anyone recently gotten an extension or know what the current options are? I really need to keep these benefits going while I continue my job search.

Unfortunately, the pandemic-era extensions like PEUC are long gone. Regular UI in Washington maxes out at 26 weeks. The only extension that might be available is Extended Benefits (EB) but that only kicks in when unemployment rates hit certain triggers in the state, which hasn't happened recently.

•So there's literally nothing available right now? That's really discouraging.

•You might want to look into other programs like WorkFirst or food assistance to bridge the gap while job hunting.

Check if you're eligible for any retraining programs through WorkSource. Sometimes they offer extended benefits if you're enrolled in approved training that leads to employment in high-demand occupations.

•How do I find out about these training programs? Do I apply through Washington ESD or WorkSource directly?

•Go to your local WorkSource office or check worksourcewa.com. They have career counselors who can explain the Training Benefits program.

I was in the same boat last year. Tried calling Washington ESD dozens of times to ask about extensions but could never get through. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally used Claimyr.com to actually reach someone who explained my options clearly. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of Claimyr before. How does it help you get through to Washington ESD?

•It handles the calling and waiting for you, then connects you when an agent is available. Saved me so much frustration trying to reach them the normal way.

•That actually sounds really helpful. I've been trying to call for weeks about my own issues.

have you looked into disaster unemployment assistance? sometimes thats available depending on whats happening in your area

Carmen Diaz
•DUA is only for specific declared disasters and the person would need to be directly affected by that disaster, not just general unemployment.

Andre Laurent
•oh ok didnt know it was that specific

The whole system is rigged anyway. They make it impossible to get extensions even when people desperately need them. Meanwhile they hand out billions to fraudsters during COVID but can't help legitimate claimants when benefits run out.

•I feel your frustration but the rules are set by federal and state law, not really Washington ESD's choice.

•Still doesn't make it right that people fall through the cracks.

One thing to check - make sure you've actually exhausted all 26 weeks of regular UI. Sometimes people think they're at the end but actually have a week or two left due to how the weekly benefit amount is calculated.

Yuki Tanaka
•How can I check exactly how many weeks I have left? My account just shows the dollar amount remaining.

Carmen Diaz
•Divide your remaining balance by your weekly benefit amount. That'll give you the number of weeks left.

You could also look into whether you qualify for a new claim if you've worked since your original claim started. Sometimes people don't realize they can file a new claim if they've earned enough wages.

•I did some part-time work a few months ago. Would that count toward a new claim?
0 coins
Aiden Rodríguez
•Possibly! You need to earn at least 680 times your weekly benefit amount in covered wages during your benefit year to qualify for a new claim.

•This is definitely worth exploring. A new claim would restart your 26-week entitlement period.

What about Trade Adjustment Assistance? I heard that provides extended benefits for people whose jobs were affected by trade.

Carmen Diaz
•TAA is very specific - your employer has to be certified as trade-affected and you have to be laid off due to foreign competition. It's not a general extension program.

I'm going through the same thing. Benefits end next month and I'm panicking. Been applying to jobs constantly but nothing's panning out. This is so stressful.

•Hang in there. Have you been documenting all your job search activities? Make sure you're meeting the requirements in case Washington ESD asks.

•Yes I've been keeping track through WorkSourceWA. At least that part I'm doing right.

Check with 211 for other assistance programs in your area. Sometimes there are local programs that can help with bills and food while you're between benefits and finding work.

•Good idea, I hadn't thought of that. Every little bit helps right now.

My sister used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier when she needed to talk to Washington ESD about her claim status. She said it was worth it just to avoid the endless busy signals and holds.

•How much does it cost? I'm already strapped for cash.

•She didn't mention the cost being an issue, just that it worked when nothing else did. Might be worth checking their site.

The Extended Benefits program used to trigger more often but the formulas changed. Now it's almost impossible for states to qualify unless unemployment gets really bad again.

Noah Ali
•Yeah the triggers are based on comparison to previous years so even if unemployment is high, if it's not higher than before, no EB.

Have you considered gig work or temp agencies? Not ideal but might help bridge the gap between benefits ending and finding permanent work.

Yuki Tanaka
•I've been thinking about that. Would I still be able to collect partial UI if I do some gig work?
0 coins
Chloe Boulanger
•Yes, as long as you report the earnings. Washington has partial benefit formulas that let you keep some UI while working part-time.

This is exactly why I tell everyone to start looking for work immediately when they file for UI, not wait until benefits are about to run out. The job market moves slow.

•I have been looking! It's not like I've been sitting around doing nothing.

•Not everyone has that luxury of choice. Sometimes the job market just sucks regardless of how hard you try.

One last thing to try - call your state legislators office. Sometimes they can help navigate the system or at least connect you with the right resources at Washington ESD.

Yuki Tanaka
•That's actually a really good suggestion. I never would have thought of that.

Bottom line is there aren't many options for extensions right now. Focus on the job search, look into training programs, and explore other assistance programs. It's tough but you'll get through it.

Just wanted to add that if you do manage to get through to Washington ESD to ask about your specific situation, make sure to get any information in writing or at least document who you spoke with and when.

•Great point. I'll definitely do that if I can ever reach someone. Still haven't had luck getting through on the phone.

•That's exactly why Claimyr was so helpful for me. Took the frustration out of trying to reach them repeatedly.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims until your benefits are completely exhausted, even in your last partial week. Sometimes people stop filing thinking they're done and miss out on their final payment.

•Good reminder, I'll make sure to do that. Don't want to leave any money on the table.
