Can I apply for an extension on my unemployment benefits in Washington?
My regular unemployment benefits are about to run out next month and I'm still actively job searching. I've been on UI for about 22 weeks now and haven't found anything yet despite applying to tons of jobs. I know there used to be extended benefits during COVID but I'm not sure what's available now. Can I apply for an extension on my unemployment through Washington ESD? What are the current requirements and how do I go about applying if it's still possible?

Extensions depend on the unemployment rate in Washington. Right now there's no automatic federal extension program like there was during the pandemic. You might qualify for Extended Benefits (EB) if the state unemployment rate triggers it, but that's rare these days.

•So there's no way to get more weeks? I'm really worried about what happens when my benefits run out.

•Check your online account to see your remaining balance. Sometimes people think they're out of weeks when they actually have money left on their claim.

I was in the same boat last year. No extensions available unless the state unemployment rate hits specific thresholds. You should call Washington ESD to confirm your exact situation though.

•I've been trying to call but can never get through. The phone lines are always busy.

•Try calling right when they open at 8am. That's usually the best time to get through to someone at Washington ESD.

Actually, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them. They basically call on your behalf and connect you when an agent picks up. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•That sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•It's not free but it was worth it for me to finally talk to someone about my claim issues. Way better than spending hours on hold.

•I've heard of that service too. A friend used it and said it saved her tons of time trying to reach Washington ESD.

The Extended Benefits program is triggered when Washington's unemployment rate reaches certain levels. Right now we're not in a trigger period. You can check the current status on the Washington ESD website under Extended Benefits.

•What happens if I can't find work before my benefits end? Are there other programs I can apply for?

•You might qualify for other assistance programs like SNAP or temporary assistance. Also make sure you're using all the WorkSourceWA services available to you.

this is so frustrating, they ended all the pandemic programs but people are still struggling to find work. the job market isn't as great as they make it seem

•Exactly! I've been applying everywhere and either get no response or they want experience I don't have.

•Have you tried working with the career counselors at WorkSourceWA? They might help you identify transferable skills or suggest different types of jobs to apply for.

Make sure you're documenting all your job search activities properly. If Extended Benefits do get triggered later, you'll need to show you've been actively searching. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.

•I've been keeping track but wasn't sure about the exact requirements. Good to know it's 3 per week.

•Wait, I thought it was 2 per week? Or did that change recently?

•It's 3 activities per week for regular UI claims in Washington. This includes job applications, interviews, networking events, etc.

I was able to get through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. The agent confirmed that there are no extensions available right now unless the unemployment rate triggers Extended Benefits. They also told me to keep filing my weekly claims even if my balance is low.

•Thanks for the update! I might try that service too since I really need to talk to someone about my specific situation.

•Yeah, Claimyr worked well for me too. Much easier than trying to get through on my own.

Check if you qualify for any retraining programs. Sometimes you can get extended benefits while in an approved training program, but I'm not sure if that's still available.

Alice Fleming
•That's interesting. Do you know what kind of training programs qualify?

Benjamin Kim
•There are some programs through WorkSourceWA that might extend benefits during training, but eligibility is limited. You'd need to check with them directly.

I'm in the same situation - benefits running out soon and no extension available. It's really stressful not knowing what's going to happen.

•At least I'm not alone in this. It's scary thinking about what happens when the money stops coming.

•Have you both looked into temporary or part-time work? Sometimes that can help bridge the gap while you're still looking for something permanent.

Just to clarify - there are no federal extension programs currently active. Extended Benefits (EB) are only available when triggered by high unemployment rates in the state. Right now Washington doesn't meet the trigger requirements.

•So basically I need to find work before my regular benefits run out or I'm on my own?

Benjamin Kim
•Unfortunately, yes. But keep checking the Washington ESD website for updates on Extended Benefits status. Things can change if the unemployment rate increases.

Make sure you're not missing any potential job opportunities. I thought I had applied everywhere but then found a bunch of companies I hadn't considered.

•I've been using the usual job sites but maybe I should expand my search. Any suggestions?

•Try looking at company websites directly, not just job boards. Also check with temp agencies - sometimes temp work can lead to permanent positions.

the whole system is broken if you ask me. people who need help can't get it and they make it impossible to reach anyone at washington esd

•That's why I'm considering trying that Claimyr service. Seems like the only way to actually talk to someone.

•Claimyr definitely made it easier for me. Worth checking out if you need to speak with Washington ESD about your claim.

Have you looked into any assistance programs through DSHS? They might have programs to help with bills or food while you're job searching.

Alice Fleming
•I haven't but that's a good idea. I should probably start looking into backup options now.

•Yes, definitely explore other assistance programs. SNAP benefits, utility assistance, etc. Don't wait until your unemployment runs out to apply.

One more thing - if you do find work, even part-time, you can sometimes continue receiving partial unemployment benefits. Make sure to report any earnings on your weekly claims.

Alice Fleming
•Good point. I wasn't sure how that worked with part-time jobs.

Hassan Khoury
•Washington ESD has a formula for calculating partial benefits. As long as you report your earnings honestly, you might still receive some unemployment money.

Keep your chin up! I know it's stressful but something will come through. Just keep applying and following up on applications.

Final advice - keep filing your weekly claims even if your balance is getting low. Sometimes there are small adjustments or corrections that can add a few more weeks. And definitely stay on top of the Extended Benefits status in case it gets triggered.

•Will do. Thanks everyone for all the advice. I'll keep checking the Washington ESD website for updates.
