Can I extend my unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
My regular unemployment benefits are about to run out in 2 weeks and I'm still actively job searching. I've been on UI for about 20 weeks now and haven't found anything yet despite applying to dozens of jobs. Is there any way to extend my benefits through Washington ESD? I heard there might be some extended benefit programs but I'm not sure if they're still available or how to apply. Has anyone been through this process recently?

Unfortunately, the federal extended benefit programs that were available during COVID have ended. Washington ESD doesn't currently offer any automatic extensions beyond the standard 26 weeks of regular unemployment benefits. However, you should check if you qualify for any state-specific programs or if there are any new federal programs that have been implemented recently.

•That's disappointing but thanks for the info. I was really hoping there would be something available since the job market is still tough in my field.

•Yeah the extended benefits ended last year. Pretty frustrating when you're still actively looking for work.

I was in the same situation last month and had to just accept that my benefits were ending. The best thing you can do is make sure you're maximizing your job search efforts in these last couple weeks. Document everything you're doing because if any new programs become available, having that record will help.

•Good point about documenting everything. I've been keeping track through WorkSourceWA but I should probably keep my own records too.

Andre Dubois
•Definitely keep your own records. The WorkSourceWA system sometimes has glitches and you don't want to lose that documentation.

Have you tried calling Washington ESD directly to ask about any available programs? Sometimes there are smaller state programs that aren't widely advertised. I know it's hard to get through to them by phone, but I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me get connected to an actual Washington ESD representative. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•I haven't tried calling recently because I always get stuck in the phone queue. How does Claimyr work exactly?

•It basically calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to a real person. Saved me hours of sitting on hold and getting disconnected.

•Interesting, never heard of that service before. Might be worth trying if you really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

I'm in the exact same boat! My benefits end next week and I'm panicking. This is so stressful when you're already dealing with being unemployed. Why can't they just automatically extend benefits for people who are actively looking for work?

Aisha Rahman
•I feel you completely. The stress of knowing the benefits are ending while still job hunting is awful.

•I understand the frustration, but unemployment benefits are designed as temporary assistance. The state has to balance helping people with fiscal responsibility.

Check with your local WorkSource office too. They sometimes have information about training programs or other assistance that might be available. Even if there aren't benefit extensions, they might have other resources to help bridge the gap.

•That's a good idea. I should probably schedule an appointment with them anyway to make sure I'm doing everything right with my job search.

•Yes, definitely do that. They also have job placement services that might help you find something faster.

this whole system is so messed up. they make it impossible to get help when you actually need it. i've been calling washington esd for weeks trying to get answers about my claim and can never get through

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. The regular phone system is basically broken with how overwhelmed they are.

•maybe i should try that claimyr thing you mentioned. anything has to be better than this endless phone runaround

I thought I read somewhere that Washington state was considering some kind of extended benefits program, but I might be thinking of a different state. Has anyone heard anything about that?

•There have been some discussions in the state legislature, but nothing has been passed yet. It's worth keeping an eye on Washington ESD's website for any updates.

Aisha Rahman
•I'll definitely keep checking their website. Even if something gets passed, it probably won't help me since my benefits end so soon.

Another thing to consider is whether you might qualify for any other assistance programs while you're job searching. Food assistance, housing help, etc. It's not the same as unemployment benefits but it can help stretch your savings.

Aisha Rahman
•That's actually really good advice. I haven't looked into other assistance programs yet but I probably should.

Jamal Carter
•Yeah, I should probably do that too. Pride aside, if I need help then I need help.

Wait, are you sure about the 26 week limit? I thought Washington had longer benefits than some other states?
0 coins
Ethan Wilson
•Washington ESD provides up to 26 weeks of regular unemployment benefits, same as most states. The duration can vary slightly based on your work history and wages, but 26 weeks is the standard maximum.

Mei Liu
•Oh okay, I must have been thinking of something else. Thanks for clarifying.

Make sure you're also looking into any retraining programs that might be available. Sometimes there are programs that provide financial assistance while you're learning new skills, which could help bridge the gap after your UI benefits end.

Aisha Rahman
•I hadn't thought about retraining programs. Do you know where I'd find information about those?

Andre Dubois
•WorkSourceWA would be your best bet, or you could try calling Washington ESD directly to ask about training programs.

this is exactly why the unemployment system needs to be reformed. people are falling through the cracks and there's no safety net when the arbitrary time limits run out

Zoe Alexopoulos
•I mean, I get that there have to be some limits, but 26 weeks does seem pretty short in today's job market.

•The system is designed to provide temporary assistance while people find new employment. The idea is that it shouldn't be permanent support.

Update: I just tried using that Claimyr service someone mentioned and actually got through to Washington ESD! The representative confirmed that there are currently no extension programs available, but she gave me some good information about other resources I can look into. Thanks for the suggestion!

Just wanted to add that even though there aren't extensions right now, you should still keep filing your weekly claims until your benefit year actually ends. Sometimes people stop filing early thinking there's no point.
0 coins
Aisha Rahman
•Good point. I'll make sure to keep filing right up until the end.
0 coins
Carmen Flores
•Yes, definitely keep filing. You never know if something might change or if there might be retroactive benefits available.

Has anyone looked into whether there might be any federal programs coming down the pipeline? I know Congress has been talking about unemployment reform.

•There's always discussion about various programs, but nothing concrete has been passed. It's best to plan based on what's currently available rather than what might happen.

Yuki Sato
•yeah don't hold your breath waiting for congress to actually help unemployed people. they're too busy with other things

I just want to say thanks to everyone who responded to this thread. Even though the news isn't great about extensions, it's helpful to know what the actual situation is rather than just wondering and hoping.

Aisha Rahman
•Agreed! This has been really helpful. At least now I know what to expect and can plan accordingly.

One more thing to consider - make sure your resume and job search strategy are as strong as possible for these last couple weeks. Sometimes people get comfortable with the routine of collecting benefits and don't push as hard on the job search.
0 coins
Aisha Rahman
•That's probably good advice. I should probably get my resume reviewed and maybe expand my search criteria.

Andre Dubois
•WorkSource offers free resume review services too, which could be helpful.

This thread has been really informative. I'm not in the same situation yet but it's good to know what to expect when I get closer to my benefit limit.

•Glad it's helpful for you too. Hopefully by the time you get to that point, there might be some new programs available.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing - I've recommended it to several people now and everyone has had success getting through to Washington ESD. It's really changed how I deal with unemployment issues since I don't have to waste entire days trying to get through their phone system.

•I used it yesterday and got connected in like 20 minutes. Definitely beats sitting on hold for hours.

Sorry this isn't the answer you were hoping for OP, but at least you know where you stand now. Make sure to apply for any other assistance you might need and keep pushing hard on the job search.

Just remember that even after your benefits end, you can still use WorkSourceWA resources for job searching. They don't cut you off from those services just because your UI benefits expire.

Aisha Rahman
•Good to know! I'll definitely keep using those resources even after my benefits end.

Andre Dubois
•Exactly. The job search support continues even if the financial benefits don't.
