Can unemployment benefits be extended in Washington ESD?
I'm getting close to exhausting my regular UI benefits and wondering if there are any extension programs available through Washington ESD? I've been on unemployment for about 20 weeks now and still haven't found work despite actively job searching. Are there any federal or state extension programs I should know about? My benefit year doesn't end until October but I'm worried about running out of weeks before then.

Washington state regular UI provides up to 26 weeks of benefits during your benefit year. There aren't any automatic extension programs like there were during the pandemic (PEUC, etc.). Once you exhaust your 26 weeks, that's typically it unless Congress authorizes new federal extensions.

•So there's nothing available right now? I thought I heard something about extended benefits but maybe that was old information.

•There's a program called Extended Benefits (EB) that can kick in during high unemployment periods, but Washington's unemployment rate hasn't triggered it recently. It's tied to specific economic indicators.

I was in the same situation last year - exhausted my 26 weeks and that was it. Had to rely on other resources while continuing to look for work. The job market is still tough in some sectors.

•That's what I was afraid of. Did you end up finding something eventually?

•Yeah, took another 8 weeks after benefits ended but I finally landed a position. Hang in there!

You might want to call Washington ESD to confirm your exact benefit situation and see if there are any other programs you qualify for. Sometimes there are training programs or work programs that might help bridge the gap. I used Claimyr to get through to an agent when I had questions about my claim - their service at claimyr.com really helped me avoid the busy signal runaround.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I've been trying to call ESD but can never get through. How does that Claimyr thing work?

•They basically handle the calling for you and get you connected to an actual ESD agent. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way less frustrating than spending hours on hold.

•I've heard of Claimyr but wasn't sure if it was legit. Good to know it actually works for getting through to ESD.

Check if you qualify for any retraining programs through WorkSource. Sometimes they have programs that provide additional support while you're learning new skills. It's not the same as extended UI but might help financially.

•That's a good idea. I'll look into what's available through WorkSource in my area.

•Yeah, and some programs even provide additional financial assistance beyond just the training. Worth exploring all your options.

The whole system is frustrating. During COVID there were all these extension programs and now nothing. People are still struggling to find work but there's no safety net once your 26 weeks are up.

•I get the frustration but those were emergency pandemic programs. The regular system has always been 26 weeks max unless there are extraordinary circumstances triggering extended benefits.

•I know, but it doesn't make it any less difficult for people who are genuinely trying to find work in this job market.

Have you looked into any local assistance programs? Food banks, utility assistance, that kind of thing? Not unemployment related but might help stretch your resources while you continue job searching.

•I hadn't really considered that but you're right, every bit helps. Thanks for the suggestion.

Just to clarify the Extended Benefits program I mentioned earlier - it's triggered when a state's unemployment rate hits certain thresholds. Washington would need either a 13-week average unemployment rate of at least 5% AND 120% of the average for the same period in the previous two years, OR a 13-week average of at least 6%. We're not there currently.

•Wow, those are pretty specific requirements. Sounds like it would take a pretty significant economic downturn to trigger those benefits.

•Exactly. It's designed as a safety net for severe economic conditions, not just individual hardship unfortunately.

definitely check with an ESD agent about any programs you might qualify for. i used that claimyr service someone mentioned earlier when i had issues with my weekly claims and it saved me so much time and frustration trying to get through

•Seems like a lot of people have had good experiences with that service. I might give it a try since I can't seem to reach ESD any other way.

Look into temporary work or gig work while you're still receiving benefits. You can work part-time and still collect partial unemployment as long as you report your earnings. Might help stretch things out a bit longer.

•That's true, I keep forgetting you can work part-time and still get some benefits. I should look into that more seriously.

•Just make sure you report everything correctly on your weekly claims. ESD is pretty strict about unreported earnings.

This is why I tell everyone to start looking for work immediately when they file, even if they think they'll be called back. 26 weeks goes by faster than you think, especially in competitive job markets.

•Easy to say in hindsight but some industries are just really tough right now. Not everyone is sitting around doing nothing.

•I've been actively job searching the whole time. Some fields are just really competitive right now.

Have you considered expanding your job search geographically or into related fields? Sometimes you have to be flexible when benefits are running out.

•I've been thinking about that. It's tough because moving costs money I don't have, but remote work options might be worth exploring more.

Make sure you're documenting all your job search activities properly. If there are any work programs or training opportunities that come up, having a solid record of your search efforts will help with eligibility.

•Good point. I've been keeping track but maybe not as thoroughly as I should be.

Contact 211 - they can connect you with local resources and assistance programs. Won't extend your unemployment but might help with other expenses so your remaining benefits go further.

•I'll give them a call. Every little bit helps at this point.

One more thing to consider - if you do talk to an ESD agent (whether through normal channels or using a service like Claimyr), ask specifically about any pilot programs or special initiatives. Sometimes there are smaller programs that aren't widely publicized.

Alina Rosenthal
•That's a really good suggestion. I wouldn't have thought to ask about pilot programs specifically.

Sorry you're going through this. The uncertainty when benefits are running out is really stressful. Hang in there and keep applying - something will come through.

•Thanks for the encouragement. It really helps to know others have been through similar situations.

Also make sure you understand exactly when your benefit year ends vs when you exhaust your weekly benefit amount. These are two different things and it affects your options for refiling.

•Good point - I think my benefit year runs until October but I'll be out of weeks before then.

Lindsey Fry
•Right, so once you exhaust your weeks, you can't collect anything else until your benefit year ends and you requalify for a new claim (if you have sufficient earnings).

Keep your chin up and keep networking. Sometimes the best opportunities come from connections rather than online applications. Let everyone know you're looking.

•You're absolutely right. I need to be better about reaching out to my network.

Bottom line - no automatic extensions right now, but definitely worth talking to ESD about all your options. And start preparing financially for the possibility that benefits might end before you find work.

•Yeah, that's probably the most realistic approach. Thanks everyone for all the advice and perspective.
