washington unemployment 2023 was 4.2% average but ranged from 3.9% to 4.8% depending on the month. tech layoffs in first half of year then recovery in second half. but esd processing is still terrible regardless
The frustrating thing about 2023 was that even with relatively normal unemployment rates, Washington ESD somehow got worse at customer service. I spent literally hundreds of hours trying to reach someone about my claim. Finally had to use one of those callback services to get through.
I used Claimyr after seeing it mentioned in another forum. Actually worked - got through to a Washington ESD agent within an hour instead of the weeks I'd been trying.
I moved here from California and filed an interstate claim. It took 3 weeks but eventually went through. Just be patient with the process.
One more thing - if you quit your job voluntarily, the work history requirements are the same but you might not qualify for benefits regardless. You generally need to be laid off or terminated through no fault of your own.
If you do get approved, make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. The weekly amount is what you get each week, but there's a total maximum you can receive during your benefit year.
Just wanted to follow up - I mentioned Claimyr earlier and I see others have had good experiences too. If you do run into any issues with your claim or need to speak with Washington ESD about your specific situation, it's definitely worth considering. Much better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected.

Question - if they get approved for benefits initially but I appeal and win, do I get credit back on my account for those charges?

•Yes, if Washington ESD reverses the decision after your appeal, those benefit charges should be removed from your experience rating account. It's like the claim never happened for tax calculation purposes.

•Good to know. Makes it worth fighting if you have a solid case.

Just want to add that if you're not sure about the process, Washington ESD has employer resources on their website that explain everything. Better to understand your rights and responsibilities upfront than scramble after someone files a claim.

•Exactly. Be proactive and thorough. The worst thing you can do is ignore Washington ESD's requests for information.

•And remember, if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about your specific situation, services like Claimyr can save you hours of hold time. Sometimes a quick conversation can clear up confusion about the process.
