Is it hard to get unemployment benefits approved in Washington - what should I expect?
I'm thinking about filing for unemployment for the first time and honestly have no idea what I'm getting into. Is the Washington ESD process actually as complicated as people make it sound? I keep hearing horror stories about claims getting denied or stuck in adjudication forever. My job ended last week (layoff, not fired) so I think I qualify but I'm worried about messing something up on the application. How hard is it really to get approved for UI benefits in Washington? Should I be prepared for a long wait or does it usually go smoothly?

If you were laid off and meet the earnings requirements, it's usually pretty straightforward. The key is being completely honest on your initial application and making sure you report your work history accurately. Most claims get approved within 2-3 weeks if there are no issues.

•That's reassuring! What are the earnings requirements exactly? I worked full time for about 8 months before the layoff.

•You need to have earned at least $6,240 in your base year and worked in at least two quarters. With 8 months full time you should be fine.

honestly the hardest part is just getting through to someone at Washington ESD if you have questions. The online application itself isn't too bad but if something goes wrong good luck reaching a human being on the phone

•Ugh that's what I was afraid of. What if I need help with something?

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They basically handle the calling for you and connect you when they reach someone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Oh interesting, never heard of that before. Does it actually work?

The application process itself is pretty user-friendly on the Washington ESD website. Just make sure you have all your employment information ready - dates of employment, employer addresses, reason for separation, etc. The system will walk you through everything step by step.

•This is good advice. I'd also recommend applying as soon as possible since there's a waiting week before benefits start anyway.

•Good point about applying quickly. I'll gather all my employment info this weekend and file on Monday.

IT'S A NIGHTMARE! I've been waiting 6 weeks for my claim to get out of adjudication and Washington ESD won't tell me anything. The whole system is broken and they don't care about helping people who actually need benefits.

•What triggered the adjudication? Most claims don't go into adjudication unless there's something that needs to be verified.

•They said there were questions about my separation but my employer already confirmed it was a layoff. Makes no sense!

•Have you tried using Claimyr to actually talk to someone? I was stuck in adjudication too and they helped me get connected to an agent who explained what was holding up my claim.

Don't let the horror stories scare you too much. Most people who have smooth experiences don't post about it online, so you mainly hear about the problems. If your situation is straightforward (layoff with clear work history), you'll probably be fine.

•That's a really good point about only hearing the bad stories. My situation is pretty straightforward so hopefully it goes smoothly.

•Exactly this! I got approved in 10 days last year and never had any issues with weekly claims. The system works fine when everything is normal.

just remember you have to file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still pending. that trips up a lot of people

•Wait really? Even if I'm not getting paid yet?

•Yes, you must file weekly claims starting the week after you apply. If you miss weeks you could lose those benefits permanently.

The job search requirement is 3 job contacts per week once your benefits start. Make sure you keep track of everything in WorkSourceWA because they do audit people randomly.

•Do I need to register with WorkSourceWA before I apply for unemployment?

Camila Castillo
•You should register within a week of filing your UI claim. It's a separate system but required for ongoing eligibility.

•ugh the job search thing is such a pain. they want detailed info about every contact you make

One important thing - if Washington ESD asks for any additional documentation, respond immediately. A lot of delays happen because people don't send in requested documents quickly enough.

•How will they contact me if they need something?

•Usually through your eServices account and sometimes by mail. Check your account frequently, especially in the first few weeks.

I thought it would be super complicated but honestly the hardest part was just deciding to apply. The actual process was pretty painless and I got my first payment 3 weeks after filing.

•That makes me feel better! Did you have to do anything special or just fill out the online application?

•Just the online application and then weekly claims. No phone calls or extra paperwork needed in my case.

Don't believe the people saying it's easy. Washington ESD is understaffed and overwhelmed. They'll find any excuse to deny your claim or put it in adjudication hell.

•That's not really accurate. Yes they're busy but most legitimate claims get approved. The issues usually come from incomplete applications or complex separation circumstances.

•Tell that to the thousands of people still waiting months for their claims to be processed!

Just want to add that Claimyr has been really helpful for people I know who've had issues reaching Washington ESD. It's not free but worth it if you get stuck and need to talk to someone. They actually get you connected instead of sitting on hold for hours.

•How much does something like that cost?

•I'd rather not get into pricing here but check their website. For me it was worth it to avoid the stress of calling constantly.

Thanks everyone for all the advice! Sounds like as long as I'm thorough with the application and stay on top of weekly claims I should be okay. I'll definitely bookmark that Claimyr site just in case I run into problems.

One last tip - take screenshots of important pages when you file your claim and save confirmation numbers. Documentation is your friend if anything goes wrong.

•Great idea! I'll make sure to document everything as I go through the process.

tbh the system has gotten better since covid. used to be way worse. still not perfect but definitely more manageable now

•Agreed, they made a lot of improvements to the online systems and processing times are much better than they were in 2020-2021.

Final thought - don't overthink it. If you qualify, apply. The worst that happens is they ask for more information or deny it and you can appeal. But you'll never know unless you try.

•Very true! I'm going to stop worrying and just get it done. Thanks again everyone!
