How to qualify for extended unemployment benefits - Washington ESD eligibility requirements?
I'm coming up on week 24 of my regular UI claim and wondering if there are any extended benefit programs available through Washington ESD right now. My regular benefits are about to run out but I'm still actively job searching. I know there used to be federal extension programs but I'm not sure what's currently available. Does anyone know the current requirements to qualify for extended unemployment benefits in Washington state? I've been filing my weekly claims consistently and meeting all job search requirements.

Extended Benefits (EB) in Washington depend on the state's unemployment rate. Right now we don't have EB activated because our rate isn't high enough. The trigger is usually around 6.5% for 13 weeks or 8% for any period. You might want to check Washington ESD's website for current EB status.

•Thanks, I'll check the ESD site. So there's no automatic extension after regular benefits end?

Atticus Domingo
•Correct, no automatic extension. EB has to be triggered by unemployment rates and it's not active right now in WA.

I'm in the same boat - week 22 and getting nervous. Have you looked into any job training programs? Sometimes there are extensions available if you're enrolled in approved training.

•I haven't looked into training programs yet. Do you know which ones qualify for benefit extensions?

•Training Benefit (TB) can extend your claim if you're in an approved program. Contact Washington ESD about TB eligibility - it has to be pre-approved before you start training.

Been trying to get info about this for weeks but can't get through to anyone at ESD. The phone lines are always busy and my messages through the online system don't get answered. This is so frustrating when you're about to lose benefits.

•I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Finally got answers about my claim status.

•Never heard of that but willing to try anything at this point. Thanks for the tip!

The federal extension programs ended in 2021. Now it's just regular UI (up to 26 weeks) and potentially EB if triggered by state unemployment rates. Some people qualify for Training Benefits but that requires pre-approval.

•Wait, I thought regular UI was only 20 weeks in Washington?

Isaiah Cross
•No, regular UI is up to 26 weeks in Washington state. The duration depends on your earnings during your base period.

Here are the current extension options in WA: 1) Training Benefits if enrolled in approved training, 2) Extended Benefits if triggered (currently not active), 3) Trade Adjustment Assistance for trade-related job losses. That's pretty much it right now.

•What about Trade Adjustment Assistance? How do you know if your job loss qualifies?

•TAA is for workers whose jobs were lost due to foreign trade. Your employer or union typically files a petition. It's pretty specific - not for general economic layoffs.

this sucks, i thought there would be more help available. 26 weeks goes by fast when you're looking for decent work not just any minimum wage job

•I feel you. The job market is tough right now even with supposedly low unemployment.

•Remember you're only required to search for suitable work. You don't have to take jobs that pay significantly less than your previous wage, at least initially.

Can you reopen an old claim if you had one from a previous year? Or does it have to be a completely new claim?

Morita Montoya
•You can potentially reopen a previous claim if it hasn't expired (claims are valid for one year). But if it's expired, you'd need to file a new claim based on recent earnings.

•My previous claim was from 2023, so probably expired. Would need to check my benefit year end date.

For anyone having trouble getting through to ESD about extensions or claim questions - I mentioned Claimyr earlier but wanted to add that they really helped me understand my options when I couldn't reach anyone directly. Sometimes you need to talk to an actual person to get your specific situation clarified.

•I tried calling ESD again this morning - still can't get through. How does Claimyr work exactly?

•They basically handle getting you connected to ESD agents. Much better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected.

Update: I checked ESD's website and confirmed EB is not currently active in Washington. Going to look into the Training Benefits option since I've been considering going back to school anyway.

•Smart move. Just make sure to get TB approved BEFORE you start any training program. They won't approve it retroactively.

•Which training programs are you looking at? I'm curious about this option too.

One thing to remember - even without extensions, you might be eligible for other assistance programs like food stamps, housing assistance, or utility help while you're job searching. Don't just focus on unemployment extensions.

•good point, hadn't thought about other programs. where do you apply for those?

•DSHS for food and cash assistance, local housing authorities for housing help, and utility companies often have low-income programs.

Just wanted to follow up - used Claimyr yesterday and finally got to speak with an ESD agent about my situation. They confirmed no extensions are available right now but helped me understand my options for when my benefits end.

•That's great! What did they say about the Training Benefits option?

Kingston Bellamy
•They said I'd need to apply for TB before starting any program, and it has to be at an approved school for an approved field. They can email you the list of qualifying programs.

For anyone following this thread - I'd recommend checking ESD's website monthly for EB status updates. Economic conditions can change and EB could get triggered if unemployment rates rise significantly.

•Good advice. Is there a specific page on their site that shows EB status?

Morita Montoya
•Yes, look for 'Extended Benefits' or 'EB' in their unemployment insurance section. They're required to post current status there.

Final thought - make sure you're documenting all your job search activities thoroughly. Even if extensions aren't available, you want to be in compliance if anything changes or if you need to file a new claim later.
