Can I apply for unemployment extension in Washington - regular UI running out soon
My regular unemployment benefits are about to run out in 2 weeks and I'm wondering if I can apply for any kind of extension through Washington ESD? I've been looking for work but haven't found anything yet. I heard there used to be extended benefits but I'm not sure what's available now. Has anyone been through this process recently? I'm really stressed about what happens when my 26 weeks are up.

Unfortunately, the federal extended benefit programs like PEUC ended a while back. Washington state does have Extended Benefits (EB) but it only kicks in when unemployment rates are really high statewide. Right now we're not in an EB period.

•So there's literally nothing available after my regular 26 weeks? That's terrifying.

•yeah the EB program is tied to state unemployment rates and we haven't qualified for it in over a year

You should still file your weekly claim even in your last week. Sometimes there are small adjustments that can give you a few extra dollars. But honestly, your best bet is to look into other assistance programs while you keep job searching.

•What kind of other programs? I've never had to deal with this before.

•Food assistance, housing help, utility assistance. Contact 211 for local resources. Also make sure you're registered with WorkSource for job search help.

I was in the same boat last month. My regular UI ran out and there was no extension available. I tried calling Washington ESD multiple times to see if there were any options I missed, but could never get through to anyone. The phone system is absolutely useless.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I found out about it recently and it actually helped me get through to a Washington ESD agent. There's this video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Basically it calls for you and waits in the phone queue.

•Never heard of that. Is it legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's real, the website is claimyr.com. They handle all the calling and waiting so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. Saved me so much frustration.

The system is so broken!! They cut off all the pandemic programs and now people are left with nothing. I've been unemployed for 8 months total and only got 26 weeks of help. How is that fair???

•I feel you but the pandemic programs were always meant to be temporary. The regular UI system is back to how it was before COVID.

•Well it sucks! People still need help even if there's no pandemic anymore.

Just to clarify the Extended Benefits program - it's triggered when either the state's 13-week unemployment rate is 110% of the rate for the same period in the previous 2 years, OR when it's 5% or higher. Washington hasn't met those thresholds recently.

•Do you know what the current rate is? I'm curious how close we might be.

•Last I checked it was around 3.8% statewide, so nowhere near the 5% trigger point.

i went through this same thing 6 months ago, there really isnt anything after regular UI runs out unless the state triggers EB which isnt happening anytime soon. had to find temp work to get by

•How did you find temp work? I've been applying everywhere but nothing.

Wait, I thought there was something called Trade Adjustment Assistance? My cousin mentioned it but I don't know if that applies to everyone.

•TAA is only for people whose jobs were lost due to foreign trade or imports. It's very specific and most people don't qualify for it.

•Ah okay, that makes sense why I couldn't find much info about it.

This is exactly why I've been trying to call Washington ESD to ask about my specific situation. Maybe there's something I'm missing or some program I don't know about. But getting through to them is impossible.

•I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and waits in the queue. When an agent picks up, they connect you to the call. Way better than trying to get through yourself.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already broke.

•It's worth checking out their site at claimyr.com to see the options. For me it was worth it just to finally talk to someone at Washington ESD.

I'm in week 24 of my claim so I'm about to face this same issue. This thread is making me panic lol

•Don't panic, just start preparing now. Update your resume, apply to more jobs, look into other assistance programs. The earlier you start planning the better.

•Yeah you're right, I need to be more proactive about this.

Has anyone tried applying for UI again after their benefit year ended? I heard you might be able to start a new claim if you worked enough after filing your original claim.

Yuki Kobayashi
•You can only file a new claim if you earned enough wages during your benefit year to establish a new claim. Most people on UI haven't worked enough to qualify for a new claim.

•That makes sense, I was hoping there might be a loophole somewhere.

The whole system needs to be reformed. 26 weeks isn't enough in today's job market, especially for older workers or people in specialized fields.

•Totally agree. It can take 6+ months to find a good job in some industries.

•But the system has to be sustainable too. Extended benefits cost a lot of money.

Just want to mention that if you do exhaust your benefits, make sure you understand how that affects your job search requirements. You still need to be looking for work even without benefits if you want to potentially qualify for future claims.

•Wait, I still have to do job searches even after my benefits end?
0 coins
Ava Martinez
•Not exactly, but if you want to potentially file a new claim later, you need to show you were available and looking for work during any gap periods.

I'm dealing with this right now too. Called Washington ESD last week using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and the agent confirmed there are no extension programs available. At least I finally got a straight answer instead of wondering.

•How long did it take to get through with Claimyr?

•They called back in about 2 hours and had me connected to an agent. Much better than the 4+ hours I wasted trying to call myself.

For anyone reading this thread - start applying for jobs NOW if you haven't already. Don't wait until your benefits actually run out. The job market is competitive and it takes time.

•This is such good advice. I made the mistake of getting comfortable on UI and didn't job search seriously until the end.

•You're both right, I need to step up my job search efforts immediately.

Also check if your county has any workforce development programs or retraining opportunities. Some have funding to help people get new skills while they're looking for work.

•That's a great idea, I'll look into what's available in my area.
