What effects did massive unemployment have on Washington ESD claims processing?
I've been thinking about how the massive unemployment surge during COVID really messed up Washington ESD's whole system. My claim got stuck in adjudication for months and I'm wondering if anyone else noticed how the huge volume of claims completely overwhelmed their processing capacity? It seems like they're still dealing with backlogs and slower response times even now. Has anyone else experienced lasting effects from when unemployment was so high?

Oh absolutely, the system never really recovered from that influx. My cousin filed in early 2024 and still had to wait 6 weeks for adjudication when it should have been routine.

•6 weeks?? That's insane for a regular claim. I thought they had fixed the processing delays by now.

•They hired more staff but the training takes forever and turnover is high. Plus they're still using outdated computer systems.

The massive unemployment period definitely exposed all the weaknesses in Washington ESD's infrastructure. They had to process millions of claims when they were set up to handle maybe hundreds of thousands. Phone lines crashed, websites went down, and adjudication became a nightmare.

•And don't forget all the fraud issues that came from rushing approvals. Now they're being extra cautious which slows everything down even more.

•That makes sense. So we're basically paying for the chaos that happened during the peak unemployment period.

•Exactly. They're being more thorough now to avoid the fraud problems, but legitimate claimants are suffering longer wait times as a result.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about delays, I found this service called Claimyr that actually helped me reach an agent. They have a system that calls for you and gets you connected. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call for weeks about my adjudication status but can never get through.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of spending hours hitting redial.

•How much does something like that cost though? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to reach our own state agency.

The ripple effects are still happening. Processing times for regular UI claims went from 2-3 weeks to 4-6 weeks minimum. And if you need to appeal anything, forget about it - those hearings are backed up for months.

•My appeal hearing got scheduled 3 months out! This is ridiculous.

•That's actually faster than some I've heard. The administrative law judges are completely overwhelmed.

What really bugs me is how they keep saying they've 'modernized' but the website still crashes if too many people try to file weekly claims at once. Like, we literally learned nothing from the massive unemployment crisis.

Chloe Anderson
•YES! I tried to file my weekly claim Sunday morning and got error messages for 2 hours straight.

•Try filing really early in the morning or late at night. Less traffic on the system then.

•We shouldn't have to work around their broken system like this. Other states figured it out.

Does anyone know if the job search requirements got permanently changed because of the unemployment surge? I heard they made them more strict now.

StarStrider
•They did tighten up the job search requirements. You need to log 3 job search activities per week now and they're more likely to audit your job search log.

•Great, so not only do claims take longer to process, but they made it harder to stay eligible. Perfect.

i've been on unemployment twice since 2020 and the difference is crazy. first time took 8 weeks to get approved, second time was 3 weeks but only because i used some calling service to reach an agent

Chloe Anderson
•Which calling service? Was it that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier?

Aisha Khan
•yeah that one. worked pretty well actually, got me through to someone who could explain why my claim was stuck

•I might try that. Been waiting 5 weeks for them to process my identity verification documents.

The worst part is how they're still asking for the same documents over and over. I've submitted my ID verification 3 times now and they keep saying they need it again. This never happened before the massive unemployment period.

Anastasia Fedorov
•That's because they lost so many documents during the rush. Their document management system couldn't handle the volume and stuff just disappeared into the void.

•So basically we're stuck dealing with their incompetence from years ago. Awesome.

Anyone else notice they're way more suspicious of everyone now? I got questioned about a 2-day temp job from 6 months ago like I was trying to commit fraud or something.

•That's the overcorrection I mentioned earlier. They approved so many fraudulent claims during the crisis that now they're treating everyone like potential criminals.

•It's insulting honestly. I've been paying into this system for 15 years and they act like I'm trying to scam them.

•Welcome to the new normal. They ruined their own system and now we all pay the price.

My sister works for Washington ESD and she says the staff is completely burned out. They're dealing with angry people all day because of problems that started during the unemployment surge but never got fixed.

•I feel bad for the individual workers but the agency leadership really failed here. They should have been better prepared.

Carmen Lopez
•She agrees. Says management makes decisions without understanding how the systems actually work.

The lasting effect I noticed is that employer protests take forever now too. My claim got protested by my old employer and it took 2 months to resolve when it used to take 2 weeks.

Anastasia Fedorov
•Employer protests are definitely backed up. The adjudication units are still overwhelmed from the backlog that built up during peak unemployment.

•Two months without benefits while they sort out obvious BS from my employer. The whole system is broken.

Does anyone know if they're actually going to fix these problems or are we just stuck with this forever? It's been years since the massive unemployment period ended.

•They're working on a new computer system but it's been 'in development' for like 3 years now. Don't hold your breath.

•Every state agency says they're upgrading their systems. It's like the government version of 'the check is in the mail.

•So basically we're stuck with 1990s technology trying to handle 2020s problems. Got it.

I finally got through to someone at Washington ESD last week using that Claimyr service people mentioned. The agent actually told me that they're still processing claims from the backlog created during massive unemployment. She said some complex cases are just now getting reviewed.

Chloe Anderson
•Wait, they're STILL processing claims from years ago? How is that even possible?

Jamal Wilson
•Apparently the really complicated cases - like people who had multiple employers or worked in different states - got pushed to the bottom of the pile and just stayed there.

•That's insane. So people are still waiting for money from unemployment that happened during the crisis?

The long-term effect that really bothers me is how it broke trust in the system. People used to think unemployment was a safety net but now everyone knows it might not be there when you need it.

Amara Nnamani
•Exactly. I'm keeping way more money in savings now because I don't trust that unemployment will actually come through if I need it.

•Same here. The massive unemployment period showed us that the system can completely fail when it's needed most.

honestly the whole thing makes me mad because other states handled the unemployment surge way better than Washington. We had the worst processing times in the country for a while
0 coins
StarStrider
•Washington definitely struggled more than most states. The combination of outdated systems and poor leadership made everything worse.

•and now we're all paying for their failure with longer wait times and more bureaucracy. it's not fair

I think the biggest lasting effect is that filing for unemployment went from being straightforward to being a nightmare. You used to be able to call and actually talk to someone. Now you need special services just to reach an agent.

•That's why I'm glad I found Claimyr. At least there's a way to get through now, even if we shouldn't need it.

•It's sad that we have to pay extra just to access our own benefits. The massive unemployment period really broke everything.
