What does waiting period served mean for unemployment - Washington ESD claim approved?

I just checked my Washington ESD account and it shows 'waiting period served' under my claim status. Does this mean I'm approved? I filed my claim about 2 weeks ago and have been doing my weekly claims but haven't received any payments yet. This is my first time on unemployment so I'm not sure what this status means exactly. Should I expect to get paid soon or is there another step I need to complete?

Yes, 'waiting period served' is good news! In Washington, there's a mandatory one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits. This status means you've completed that waiting period and your claim is moving forward. You should see payments start coming through within the next few days if everything else checks out.

Oh thank goodness! I was getting worried something was wrong with my claim. Thanks for explaining that.

Same thing happened to me last month - saw that status and freaked out thinking it meant I had to wait longer lol

The waiting period is basically Washington ESD's way of ensuring you're genuinely unemployed and not just filing frivolous claims. Once it shows as 'served' you've met that requirement. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims on time though - that's crucial for continued eligibility.

I've been filing every Sunday morning. Is there a specific day I should be doing it or is Sunday fine?

Debra Bai

Sunday is perfect! Just make sure you file between Sunday and the following Saturday for each week.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and can never reach anyone on the phone. The automated system just hangs up on me after 30 minutes of holding. How do you guys actually talk to a real person there?

I had the same problem until I found claimyr.com - it's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. I was skeptical at first but it worked. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Really? That sounds almost too good to be true. Does it actually work or is it some kind of scam?

I thought the same thing but I was desperate. It got me through to someone at Washington ESD in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own. Worth checking out if you're stuck.

waiting period served just means you finished the unpaid week. its not that complicated people

Well excuse me for not knowing unemployment terminology! Some of us are new to this system.

No need to be rude about it. Everyone's learning the system for the first time at some point.

I remember when I first saw that status - I thought it meant I was in trouble or something! The Washington ESD website really doesn't explain these status updates very clearly. Once you see payments start coming through you'll feel so much better about the whole process.

Yes! The website is so confusing. I kept looking for an explanation of what each status meant but couldn't find anything helpful.

They really should have a glossary or something explaining all the different statuses and what they mean

Just to clarify for anyone else reading this - the waiting period is exactly one week, and it applies to your first week of eligibility, not your first week of filing. So if you filed late, the waiting period might have already been served by the time you submitted your claim.

0 coins

That's a good point! I filed about 3 weeks after I lost my job and my waiting period was already served when my claim got approved.

I filed pretty quickly after losing my job so I think I actually had to wait the full week. Good to know though!

The WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS SUCH A NIGHTMARE! I've been dealing with this bureaucratic mess for months and every time I think I understand something they change the rules or the website breaks. At least you got through the waiting period - some people get stuck in adjudication limbo for weeks!

Santiago Diaz

•

Oh no, what's adjudication? Should I be worried about that happening to my claim?

0 coins

Millie Long

•

Adjudication is when they need to review something about your claim more carefully. Don't worry about it unless your status changes to show that specifically.

0 coins

Yeah don't worry about it unless it happens. Just be grateful your claim is moving smoothly!

Once you start getting payments, make sure to keep track of everything for tax purposes. Washington doesn't tax unemployment benefits but federal taxes still apply. You can have taxes withheld automatically or pay quarterly - whatever works better for your situation.

Good point! I hadn't even thought about taxes yet. Is it better to have them withheld or pay later?

Depends on your situation. If you're not good at saving money I'd recommend withholding. If you want the full amount now, you can pay quarterly or at tax time.

I've been on unemployment twice in the past five years and 'waiting period served' always meant I was about to start getting paid. Usually takes 2-4 business days after you see that status for the first payment to hit your account or debit card.

That's reassuring! I chose direct deposit so hopefully it shows up in my bank account soon.

Direct deposit is definitely faster than the debit card option in my experience

The waiting period thing always confused me because it seems like just another hoop to jump through. Like, if you're eligible for benefits why make people wait an extra week? But anyway, yeah it's good that yours shows as served.

It's actually a federal requirement, not just Washington ESD being difficult. Most states have the one-week waiting period.

Ah that makes more sense. Still annoying when you need the money right away though!

Make sure you're doing your job search activities too! Even though your waiting period is served, you still need to complete the required job searches each week and log them. Don't let that slip or it could mess up your benefits.

Santiago Diaz

•

Yes I've been keeping track of my job searches in a spreadsheet. How many do I need to do per week?

0 coins

LongPeri

•

It's usually 3 job search activities per week but check your specific requirements in your account. Sometimes it varies.

0 coins

Debra Bai

•

Correct - and they can audit your job search log so make sure you're keeping detailed records of where you applied and when.

I remember being in your exact same situation! Filed my claim, did everything right, then saw 'waiting period served' and had no idea what it meant. The relief when that first payment finally came through was incredible. You're almost there!

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm definitely looking forward to that first payment.

For anyone else struggling to reach Washington ESD by phone like I was - that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier has been a lifesaver. Used it twice now when I needed to talk to someone about my claim and both times got through quickly. Way better than spending hours on hold just to get disconnected.

How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money which is why I need unemployment in the first place.

It's worth checking out their site for current info. For me it was worth it just to avoid the stress of trying to call over and over.

The good news is once you're past the waiting period and getting regular payments, the system usually runs pretty smoothly. Just keep filing your weekly claims on time and doing your job searches. Don't overthink it!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who answered - this thread has been super helpful! I feel much better understanding what 'waiting period served' actually means. Will update when I get my first payment!
