What does Washington ESD unemployment card look like - never got mine

I filed my unemployment claim 2 weeks ago and my first payment was approved but I never received any kind of card in the mail. I keep hearing people talk about their 'unemployment card' but I have no idea what it's supposed to look like or when I should expect it. Is it like a debit card? Should I be worried that I haven't gotten it yet? My claim status shows as paid but I don't see any money anywhere.

It's called a KeyBank debit card and it comes in a white envelope from KeyBank, not Washington ESD. Usually takes 7-10 business days after your first payment is processed.

Oh that makes sense! I was looking for something that said Washington ESD on it. So it just looks like a regular debit card?

0 coins

Yep, it's a blue KeyBank card with your name on it. Your unemployment payments get loaded onto it automatically.

The KeyBank Way2Go card is what Washington uses for unemployment payments. It's blue and has the KeyBank logo, not Washington ESD. Your payments are direct deposited onto this card unless you set up direct deposit to your own bank account.

0 coins

Can I change it to go to my own bank account instead? I'd rather have it go directly there.

Yes, you can set up direct deposit in your eServices account. Go to Payment Method and add your bank routing and account numbers.

Be careful though - direct deposit changes can take 2-3 weeks to take effect, so you might still need the card for a few payments.

If you haven't gotten your card after 2 weeks, you should call KeyBank directly at the number on the back of... oh wait, you don't have the card yet lol. This is actually a common problem. I had to use Claimyr.com to get through to someone at Washington ESD to verify my address was correct. Turns out they had my apartment number wrong.

What's Claimyr? Is that some kind of service to help call Washington ESD?

Yeah, it helps you get through to actual agents instead of sitting on hold forever. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Super helpful when you can't reach anyone.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my missing card. Might have to check this out if I can't get through soon.

the card is blue and says way2go on it. mine came in like 10 days but my neighbor got hers in 5 days so it varies

Good to know it can vary. I'll give it a few more days before I panic.

Sometimes mail just gets delayed too. I've had regular mail take 2 weeks to get to me lately.

Make sure you activate the card as soon as you get it! There's a phone number on the sticker and you'll need your SSN. Don't throw away any of the paperwork that comes with it either.

0 coins

Thanks for the heads up! What happens if I don't activate it right away?

Nothing terrible, but you can't access your money until you activate it. And there are instructions for setting up online access that you'll want to keep.

HEADS UP - KeyBank charges fees for some stuff like ATM withdrawals at non-KeyBank machines and balance inquiries. There's a list of free ATMs you can use, mostly at grocery stores.

0 coins

Ugh, fees are annoying but I guess that's normal for these prepaid cards. Are the fees high?

0 coins

$2.50 for out-of-network ATMs I think, plus whatever the ATM owner charges. That's why I switched to direct deposit ASAP.

You can get cash back at most stores for free when you use the card like a debit card. That's what I do to avoid ATM fees.

If it's been more than 2 weeks you should definitely call and check your address. I know someone who waited a month and it turned out Washington ESD had their old address from like 3 years ago.

How do I check what address they have on file? Is that in my eServices account?

Yes, you can see it in your profile section. You can update it there too if it's wrong.

The envelope it comes in is pretty plain, just says KeyBank on the return address. I almost threw mine away thinking it was junk mail! Look for anything from KeyBank, not Washington ESD.

0 coins

Oh no, I hope I didn't already throw it away! I'll check my mail more carefully from now on.

Same thing happened to my sister. She was waiting 3 weeks and found it in her junk mail pile.

Can I just say how confusing this whole system is? Like why doesn't Washington ESD just tell you upfront that you're getting a KeyBank card? I was so lost when I first started getting benefits.

0 coins

Right? The whole process is so unclear. They should send an email or something explaining what to expect.

0 coins

Agreed! I was expecting something official looking, not a random bank card.

Pro tip: once you get the card, download the Way2Go app. Makes it way easier to check your balance and transaction history than calling the phone number.

0 coins

Good to know! Is the app free to use?

Yep, totally free. Just search for Way2Go in your app store.

If you're still having trouble getting through to anyone about the missing card, I used Claimyr last month when I couldn't reach Washington ESD about my payment issues. It's at claimyr.com and basically helps you skip the hold times. Worked great for me.

How much does that cost? I'm already tight on money waiting for this card.

0 coins

It's worth it when you need to actually talk to someone. Way better than spending hours on hold getting nowhere.

Check with your mail carrier too. Sometimes they hold packages if your mailbox is too small or if there's a delivery issue.

0 coins

That's a good point. I'll ask them tomorrow when they come by.

0 coins

The card itself is pretty standard looking - blue with Way2Go branding and your name. Nothing fancy but it works fine for getting your unemployment payments.

Thanks everyone for all the info! I feel much better knowing what to look for now.

0 coins

No problem! We've all been confused by this process at some point.
