What do u need to qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington state?
hey everyone, just got laid off from my retail job last week and wondering what do u need to qualify for unemployment here in washington? i worked there for about 8 months but before that i was part time at another place for like 6 months. do i have enough work history? also do they check if you got fired vs laid off? my manager said it was due to budget cuts but im worried they might say something different to Washington ESD. anyone know the basic requirements?

You need to have earned at least $1,500 in your base year (first 4 of the last 5 quarters) to qualify for Washington unemployment benefits. Your 14 months of work should be plenty if you were making decent wages. The key things Washington ESD looks at are: 1) You must be unemployed through no fault of your own (layoffs count, firing for misconduct doesn't), 2) You must be able and available to work, 3) You must actively search for work each week, and 4) You need sufficient earnings in your base period.

•ok that helps! what counts as sufficient earnings though? i was making like $15/hour at the retail job

•At $15/hour, if you worked even 20 hours a week for 8 months, you'd easily meet the earnings requirement. Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit based on your highest earning quarter in the base period.

The work search thing is important - you have to apply for at least 3 jobs per week and keep records. Also make sure you file your weekly claims every Sunday, even if your initial claim is still processing. Missing weekly claims can mess up your benefits.

•do they actually check the job applications or is it just on the honor system?

•They can audit your job search activities and ask for proof, so definitely keep records of where you applied, when, and any responses you get.

ugh the Washington ESD system is such a nightmare to deal with. i've been trying to get through to them for weeks about my claim status and can never reach anyone on the phone. the automated system just hangs up on you after waiting forever

•I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr - they help you get through to Washington ESD agents by calling for you. Check out claimyr.com, they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Finally got my adjudication issue resolved after weeks of trying on my own.

•interesting, how does that work exactly? is it legit?

•Yeah it's totally legit. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you directly to a Washington ESD rep when they get through. Saved me hours of frustration.

Since you mentioned being worried about what your manager might tell Washington ESD - they will contact your employer to verify the reason for separation. If there's a dispute about whether you were laid off vs fired for cause, it could go to adjudication which can delay your benefits for weeks or even months.

•oh no that sounds scary. what if my manager says something different than what they told me?

•If there's a discrepancy, Washington ESD will investigate and you'll have a chance to provide your side of the story. Keep any documentation you have about the layoff - emails, texts, anything that shows it was due to budget cuts.

•This is exactly why I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. When my claim went into adjudication, I needed to speak with someone at Washington ESD urgently to provide additional documentation. Worth every penny to avoid the phone hassle.

wait do u have to register with WorkSource too? i thought i remembered hearing something about that

•Yes, you need to register with WorkSourceWA within 4 weeks of filing your unemployment claim. It's part of the work search requirements. You can do it online at worksourcewa.com.

One more thing - make sure you apply online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible. Benefits are only paid from the date you file your claim, not from when you became unemployed. So don't wait thinking you need to get all your paperwork together first.

•should i apply even if im not 100% sure i qualify?

•Yes, definitely apply. Let Washington ESD determine your eligibility - better to apply and get denied than to miss out on benefits you were entitled to.

the whole system is designed to make it as hard as possible to get benefits. they'll find any excuse to deny your claim or make you jump through hoops

•While the system can be frustrating, most people who legitimately qualify do eventually get their benefits. The key is following all the rules and staying on top of your weekly claims.

•easy for you to say. ive been waiting 2 months for my adjudication to finish

•Have you tried that calling service people mentioned? Claimyr or whatever? Might be worth it if you've been waiting that long. Sometimes you just need to talk to an actual person to get things moving.

thanks everyone for all the info! one last question - do they count tips as income? i made decent tips at my retail job (we had a tip jar

Elijah Knight
•Yes, tips count as wages for unemployment purposes if they were reported to your employer and you paid taxes on them. If you received cash tips that weren't reported, those wouldn't count toward your benefit calculation.

Sophia Carson
•got it, most of my tips were on credit cards so they were definitely reported

just want to add that you should screenshot everything when you file your claim and keep records of all your communications with Washington ESD. if something goes wrong you'll want that documentation

•good advice, thank you!

Also remember you have to report any work you do while collecting unemployment, even if it's just a few hours. And if you turn down suitable work, they can disqualify you from benefits.

•what counts as suitable work?

Hunter Brighton
•Generally work in your field or something similar, at wages comparable to what you were making before. The definition gets broader the longer you're unemployed though.

i qualified with just 6 months of work so you should be fine with 14 months. the hardest part is actually getting through to talk to someone when you have questions

•This is so true. I spent literally hours on hold trying to reach Washington ESD about a simple question. Finally broke down and used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and got through in like 20 minutes. Should have done it weeks earlier.

make sure you have your social security number, driver's license, and employment history ready when you apply. they ask for detailed info about your last employer

Sophia Carson
•do i need pay stubs or will they get that info from my employer?
0 coins
Ellie Lopez
•They get wage information from employers, but having your pay stubs can be helpful if there are any discrepancies or if you need to prove your earnings.

don't forget about the waiting week - there used to be a one week waiting period before you could collect benefits but i think they got rid of that during covid

Elijah Knight
•Correct, Washington eliminated the waiting week in 2020 and it hasn't been reinstated. You can receive benefits for your first week of unemployment if you're otherwise eligible.

good luck with your claim! just be patient because it can take a few weeks to get approved even if everything goes smoothly
