Washington ESD unemployment questions and answers - need help with weekly claims
I'm totally lost with this whole unemployment process and have so many questions about Washington ESD requirements. Been filing for 2 months now and still confused about job search logs, when to report work, and what happens if I mess something up. Does anyone have good answers to common unemployment questions? I keep getting different info from different sources and don't want to screw up my benefits.

What specific questions do you have? The Washington ESD system can be confusing but once you understand the basics it gets easier. Are you having trouble with weekly claims, job search requirements, or something else?

•Mainly the job search stuff - how many contacts per week, what counts as a valid contact, and how detailed the log needs to be.

Carmen Vega
•You need 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking events, job fairs, or informational interviews. Keep detailed records with company names, dates, and contact methods.

Here are the most common Washington ESD questions I see: 1) You must file weekly claims every week even if you worked, 2) Report ALL earnings for the week you earned them, not when paid, 3) Job search requirement is 3 activities per week, 4) Keep your job search log updated in case of audit, 5) Answer all questions honestly on your weekly claim.

•This is super helpful! I didn't know about reporting earnings for the week you earn them vs when you get paid.

•Wait so if I work Monday and get paid Friday, I report it for the week with Monday?

Andre Rousseau
•Exactly right. Report earnings for the week the work was performed, regardless of when the paycheck comes.

I was struggling with getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim status. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in like 20 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach Washington ESD by phone.

Jamal Harris
•Yeah it's real. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than spending your whole day redialing.

•How much does something like that cost though?

ugh the job search requirement is so annoying when you're looking in a specific field. Like I can't just apply to random jobs that don't match my skills

Carmen Vega
•You don't have to apply to random jobs. Job search activities include networking, attending career fairs, informational interviews, and online training. It's not just applications.

•oh that helps actually. I've been doing some online courses related to my field

Another question - what happens if you make a mistake on a weekly claim? Can you fix it or are you stuck?

Andre Rousseau
•You can't edit a submitted weekly claim, but you can report the error when you file your next claim. There's usually a section asking about corrections to previous weeks.

•I had to do this once when I forgot to report some part-time work. Washington ESD was actually pretty understanding about honest mistakes.

What about if you're on standby status? The requirements seem different but I can't find clear answers anywhere.
0 coins
Carmen Vega
•Standby means you're temporarily laid off but expect to return to the same employer. You still file weekly claims but may not need to do job search activities if your return date is within 8 weeks.

Zoe Stavros
•That makes sense. My employer said probably 6 weeks so I should be good without the job search stuff.

•Just make sure your employer actually files the standby paperwork with Washington ESD or you'll be stuck doing job searches anyway.

I keep hearing about adjudication but don't really understand what it means. Anyone explain this in simple terms?
0 coins
Andre Rousseau
•Adjudication is when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim before they can approve benefits. Could be about why you left your job, work availability, or identity verification.
0 coins
Mei Wong
•How long does that usually take?
0 coins
Andre Rousseau
•Varies a lot - anywhere from 2-8 weeks depending on the issue and how backed up they are. You should keep filing weekly claims during adjudication.

The Washington ESD website is so confusing. Half the links don't work and the information is scattered everywhere. Why can't they make it simpler?

Amara Okafor
•I agree the website is a mess. I usually just go straight to the weekly claim filing page and avoid trying to navigate around.

•The mobile version is even worse. Constantly times out when I'm trying to file my claim.

For anyone still having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, seriously check out that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Used it again last week when I needed to ask about my job search log requirements and got through immediately.

•I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. Been trying to call for 3 weeks about my adjudication status.

Jamal Harris
•That's exactly the kind of situation where it's worth it. Way less stressful than calling 50 times a day.

Quick question - do you have to be actively looking for work if you're in school full time? The requirements seem unclear on this.
0 coins
Carmen Vega
•Generally you need to be available for work to receive unemployment. Full-time school can conflict with this unless you're in an approved training program.
0 coins
Sofia Torres
•It's a certification program related to my field. Should I contact Washington ESD about getting it approved?
0 coins
Carmen Vega
•Yes, definitely contact them. There's a process to get training programs approved that can waive the job search requirements.

I messed up and didn't file a weekly claim for one week. Now it won't let me go back and file it. Am I screwed?
0 coins
Andre Rousseau
•You need to call Washington ESD to file a late claim. They can backdate it if you have good cause for the delay, but you need to do it ASAP.

Dmitry Sokolov
•Great, more calling Washington ESD. This is going to take forever.

•This is another perfect example of when Claimyr is worth using. Getting through for something time-sensitive like a late filing.

Does anyone know if you can collect unemployment if you quit a job for health reasons? My doctor says I can't do my old job anymore.
0 coins
Andre Rousseau
•You might qualify for benefits if you quit for compelling personal reasons related to health. You'll need medical documentation and Washington ESD will review your case.
0 coins
Ava Martinez
•I have all the medical records. Should I mention this when I apply or wait for them to ask?
0 coins
Andre Rousseau
•Mention it when you apply and be prepared to submit documentation. The more info you provide upfront, the smoother the process usually goes.

What's the maximum you can earn while still getting partial unemployment benefits?
0 coins
Carmen Vega
•In Washington, you can earn up to your weekly benefit amount plus $5 and still receive partial benefits. Anything over that reduces your benefits dollar for dollar.
0 coins
Miguel Ramos
•So if my weekly benefit is $400, I can earn up to $405 and still get something?
0 coins
Carmen Vega
•Exactly. If you earn $405, you'd get your full $400 benefit. If you earn $500, you'd get $300 in benefits.

I keep getting conflicting info about whether gig work counts for job search activities. Anyone know for sure?
0 coins
Andre Rousseau
•Looking for gig work can count as job search activities, but you need to document it properly. Include the platform, type of work sought, and date of activity.

QuantumQuasar
•Good to know. I've been applying to drive for different delivery services but wasn't sure if it counted.

This thread is super helpful! I wish Washington ESD had a FAQ section this clear on their website instead of all the confusing legal language.

Yuki Kobayashi
•Right? I learned more here in 10 minutes than hours on their official site.

Connor Gallagher
•The official site is written by lawyers for lawyers. Real people explaining things in plain English is so much better.

One more question - if you're getting unemployment and then find a job, do you need to notify Washington ESD right away or just stop filing claims?
0 coins
Carmen Vega
•You should report it on your next weekly claim. There's a question about returning to work. Don't just stop filing without reporting the job.
0 coins
Yara Sayegh
•Thanks! I start Monday so I'll make sure to report it on my Sunday filing.

I'm new to the Washington unemployment system and this whole thread has been incredibly helpful! Just wanted to add that I found the WorkSource website (worksourcewa.com) really useful for tracking job search activities. They have templates for job search logs and it integrates well with the ESD requirements. Also, if you're doing online training through LinkedIn Learning or similar platforms, make sure to save certificates - those count as valid job search activities too. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!
