Washington ESD unemployment if I quit job because of stress - am I eligible?
I had to quit my job at a warehouse last month because the stress was making me physically sick. My supervisor was constantly yelling, giving impossible deadlines, and I was having panic attacks at work. I couldn't take it anymore and just walked out. Now I'm wondering if I can file for Washington ESD unemployment benefits? I know quitting usually disqualifies you but I've heard there might be exceptions for hostile work environments. Has anyone been in a similar situation with stress-related job quitting and still gotten approved for UI benefits?

Washington ESD considers quitting for 'good cause' which can include hostile work environment, but you'll need documentation. Did you report the supervisor's behavior to HR or management before quitting? They'll want to see you tried to resolve it first.

•I did talk to HR twice but they just said my supervisor has a 'direct communication style' and to deal with it. I have emails from those conversations.

•Those emails will be crucial for your case. Make sure to submit them with your initial claim or during adjudication.

same thing happened to my brother except he was a truck driver. took forever to get approved because washington esd had to investigate if it was really good cause. he ended up having to go through adjudication for like 6 weeks

•Six weeks?? That's terrifying, I need money for rent soon. Did he eventually get approved though?

•yeah he got approved but only after providing medical records showing the stress was affecting his health

You should definitely apply right away even if you're unsure about eligibility. Washington ESD will make the determination during adjudication. For stress-related quits, they look at whether a reasonable person would have quit under the same circumstances. Document everything - the yelling incidents, any witnesses, medical visits related to stress, communications with HR.

•I do have a doctor's note from when I went to urgent care for chest pains that turned out to be anxiety. Will that help?

•Absolutely! Medical documentation linking your health issues to workplace stress strengthens your good cause argument significantly.

Been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my own adjudication issue. Their phone system is impossible! Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth it if you need to talk to someone about your specific situation.

•Thanks for the tip! I'm definitely going to need to talk to someone because this sounds complicated.

•Never heard of Claimyr before but if it actually works to get through to Washington ESD I'm interested. Their phone lines are a nightmare.

The system is SO broken! They make you jump through hoops to prove you had 'good cause' but what about companies that treat employees like garbage?? I quit my last job because of harassment and it took THREE MONTHS to get approved. Had to appeal and everything.

Dylan Campbell
•Three months?! How did you survive financially during that time?

StarSailor
•Barely. Had to borrow money from family and use credit cards. It's ridiculous how they put people through this.

•That's why it's important to apply immediately and provide as much documentation as possible upfront to avoid delays.

Key things Washington ESD looks for in stress-related quit cases: 1) You tried to resolve the issue first 2) Medical documentation if health was affected 3) Specific incidents with dates/witnesses 4) Evidence the employer knew about the problem. It's not automatic approval but you have a shot with the right documentation.

•This is really helpful. I can provide most of these things. Should I mention the panic attacks specifically in my application?

Sofia Hernandez
•Yes, be specific about how the workplace conditions affected your health. Just make sure you have medical documentation to back it up.

idk much about quitting but my cousin got unemployment after she quit her job at a restaurant. she said the manager was making inappropriate comments and creating a hostile environment. took a while but she got approved

Dylan Campbell
•That gives me some hope. Did she have to provide a lot of proof?

•yeah she had to write down everything that happened with dates and stuff. also had a coworker who witnessed some of it

Important reminder: Washington ESD defines 'good cause' as circumstances that would compel a reasonable and prudent person to quit. For workplace stress, they consider factors like: severity of conditions, efforts made to resolve issues, availability of alternatives, and impact on health/safety. Your panic attacks and HR documentation should help your case.

•That definition actually makes me feel more confident about my situation. The panic attacks were getting really bad.

Just want to say good luck with your claim. The adjudication process for quit cases can be stressful but if you have documentation you should be okay. I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier to check on my claim status and it was actually pretty easy to get through to an agent.

•I was skeptical too but it worked for me. Just helps you get through the phone queue faster.

One more tip: when you file, select 'quit' as your separation reason and in the comments section mention 'good cause due to hostile work environment affecting health.' This flags your claim for proper adjudication review rather than automatic denial.

Dylan Campbell
•Thank you so much for that specific advice! I would have just put 'quit' without explanation.

Ava Thompson
•Excellent point. The way you phrase your separation reason can determine whether it gets proper review or automatic processing.

Filing tomorrow myself for a similar situation. Boss was verbally abusive and created impossible working conditions. Really hoping Washington ESD sees it as good cause because I can't go back to that environment.

•Good luck to both of us! At least we're not alone in dealing with terrible work situations.

•Make sure you both document everything clearly and apply soon. The sooner you file, the sooner the adjudication process can begin.

Still can't believe how hard they make it to get benefits when you quit a toxic job. Like we're supposed to stay in abusive situations just to keep unemployment eligibility? The whole system needs reform.

•I agree the system has issues but there has to be some distinction between voluntary and involuntary separation for benefit purposes.

StarSailor
•Sure but they should make the good cause criteria clearer and the process faster.

Final advice for OP: Apply immediately, be thorough with documentation, and don't let anyone tell you that quitting automatically disqualifies you. Washington ESD has provisions for good cause quits, especially when health and safety are involved. Your situation sounds like it has merit.

Just wanted to add that Washington ESD adjudicators do take workplace stress seriously when there's proper documentation. My sister got approved after quitting due to harassment, but she had medical records and witness statements.

•That's encouraging to hear. I have medical documentation so hopefully that will help my case.

Best of luck OP. You've got good documentation and a legitimate case for good cause. The process may take time but don't get discouraged. Washington ESD does approve quit cases when the circumstances warrant it.
