Washington ESD unemployment how much will i get - weekly benefit calculation help needed
I just applied for unemployment through Washington ESD and I'm trying to figure out how much my weekly benefit amount will be. I made about $52,000 last year working as a retail manager but got laid off two weeks ago. I know they use some kind of formula based on your wages but I can't find a clear explanation anywhere on the Washington ESD website. Does anyone know how they calculate this? I need to budget for my bills and rent while I'm looking for work.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount using your highest earning quarter from your base period. They take that quarter's wages, divide by 26, then you get about 2.9% of that amount. So if your highest quarter was $13,000, you'd get around $500 per week before taxes.

•Thanks! So they don't just divide your yearly salary by 52 weeks? That's confusing but good to know.

•Yeah the calculation is weird, I think there's also a minimum and maximum amount too. Max is around $999 per week I believe.

I was in the same boat last month trying to figure out my benefit amount. The Washington ESD monetary determination letter takes forever to arrive and calling them is impossible - I tried for weeks and never got through.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I found out about it from someone on here and it actually got me through to a Washington ESD agent in like 20 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Never heard of that but I'll check it out. Anything has to be better than the endless busy signals.

•Is that legit? I'm always suspicious of third party services for government stuff.

The benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website is pretty accurate once you know your base period wages. Your base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed your claim.

•Wait what? I thought it was just the last year of work. This is so confusing.

Ryan Vasquez
•Nope, it's specifically those 4 quarters. So if you filed in January 2025, they'd look at July 2023 through June 2024 for your base period wages.

I HATE how complicated they make this whole process!! Why can't they just tell you upfront what you'll get instead of making you wait weeks for some determination letter?? The whole system is designed to frustrate people into giving up.

•I feel you on this. The whole Washington ESD system seems intentionally confusing.

•It's frustrating but once you understand the base period concept it makes more sense. They need to verify your wages with employers which takes time.

For what it's worth, I used Claimyr.com to get through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my benefit calculation. The agent was able to tell me exactly what my weekly amount would be based on my wage history. Saved me weeks of waiting for the determination letter.

•How much did that cost? I'm already tight on money being unemployed.

•It's not free but honestly worth it compared to the stress and time I was wasting trying to call myself. Plus I got accurate info right away instead of guessing.

just wanted to say i got $425 a week when i made about 48k last year so sounds like youll probably get around 500 or so

•That's helpful to know, thanks! Did it take long for them to approve your claim?

•took about 3 weeks total but no issues with my claim, just the normal processing time

One thing to keep in mind is that your weekly benefit amount also depends on whether you have any disqualifying issues. If everything is straightforward with your layoff, you should get the full calculated amount. But if there are any red flags they might reduce it or delay payment.

Megan D'Acosta
•What kind of red flags? I was laid off due to company downsizing, nothing on my end.

Sarah Ali
•That should be fine then. Red flags would be things like quitting without good cause, being fired for misconduct, or not being available for work.

•I got laid off too but they're still making me do job search requirements. Seems like they always find something to make it difficult.

Update: I tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and actually got through to Washington ESD today! The agent confirmed my weekly benefit amount and said my first payment should process next week. Way better than the 2+ weeks I spent trying to call on my own.

•That's awesome! I might have to try that myself if I can't get through this week.

•Good to hear it worked for someone. I'm still skeptical about using outside services for government stuff but desperate times I guess.

Just remember that whatever your weekly benefit amount is, they'll take out federal taxes unless you opt out. So if you qualify for $500, you'll actually receive less than that. You can change your tax withholding settings in your online account.

•Good point, I hadn't thought about taxes. Better to have them taken out now than owe a bunch at tax time.

•Yeah learned that the hard way last year. Owed like $800 in taxes on my unemployment benefits.

The whole base period thing screwed me over because I started my job in the middle of a quarter. Even though I was making good money when I got laid off, my benefit amount was way lower because my base period wages were from when I was making less at my previous job.

Sarah Ali
•That's frustrating but you might be able to request an alternate base period if your recent wages were significantly higher. Worth asking Washington ESD about.

•I tried but they said I didn't qualify for the alternate base period. Something about not having enough weeks of work or something.

i think the max weekly benefit in washington is like 999 now but most people dont get close to that unless they were making really good money

•Yeah I definitely wasn't making enough to hit the maximum. Just hoping for enough to cover my basic expenses.

The waiting is the worst part. I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't gotten my monetary determination. At least the weekly claims are easy to file online once you get set up.

•3 weeks seems like a long time. Have you tried calling to check on the status?

•I've tried but can never get through. Might have to look into that Claimyr service people are talking about.

•Definitely worth trying Claimyr if you're stuck. That's exactly the kind of situation where it helps - checking on claim status when you can't get through normally.

For retail managers making around 50k, you're probably looking at somewhere between $450-550 per week depending on how your wages were distributed across quarters. That's just a rough estimate though.

Megan D'Acosta
•That range sounds about right based on what others have said. Thanks for the estimate!

does anyone know if they count overtime wages differently? i worked a lot of OT last year and wondering if that affects the calculation
0 coins
Sarah Ali
•Overtime wages count the same as regular wages for benefit calculation purposes. It's all just gross wages to them.

Keith Davidson
•ok good to know thanks

The hardest part is budgeting when you don't know exactly what you'll get. I ended up having to borrow money from family while waiting for my determination letter. Really wish Washington ESD was more transparent about the timeline.

•That's exactly my situation. I'm trying to figure out if I need to find a part-time job in the meantime or if unemployment will be enough.
0 coins
Ryan Vasquez
•Just remember that if you do work part-time, you have to report those wages on your weekly claims and it might reduce your benefit amount for that week.

I got my determination letter last week and my benefit amount was exactly what the online calculator predicted. So that tool is pretty accurate if you can figure out your base period wages correctly.

•Good to know the calculator works! I'll have to dig up my old pay stubs to figure out my base period wages.

Still think the whole system is designed to be confusing on purpose. Why make people wait weeks just to find out their benefit amount? Other states tell you right away when you apply.
0 coins
Sarah Ali
•They have to verify wages with employers which takes time. It's not perfect but there are fraud prevention reasons for the process.

Ezra Bates
•I guess that makes sense but it's still frustrating when you need the money to survive.

Just wanted to share my experience - I made about $48k last year and my weekly benefit amount ended up being $432 after taxes. Took about 2.5 weeks to get my determination letter. Hope that helps with your planning!

Final update - got my first unemployment payment today! Ended up being $478 per week after taxes, which is pretty close to what people estimated based on my salary. Thanks everyone for the help and advice.

The benefit calculator is at secure.esd.wa.gov if anyone needs the direct link. You just need your quarterly wage info to use it effectively.

•Perfect, thank you for the link! I'll try that once I gather my wage information.
