How much do unemployment pay you - Washington ESD weekly benefit amounts?
I'm trying to figure out what to expect for my weekly unemployment payments from Washington ESD. I made about $52,000 last year working in retail management but got laid off two weeks ago. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? I've heard different numbers from people and I'm trying to budget until I find another job. The Washington ESD website is confusing with all the formulas.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter from the past year. They take that amount, divide by 26, then you get about 50% of that as your weekly payment. So if you made $15,000 in your highest quarter, you'd get around $288 per week before taxes.

•That makes sense! I think my highest quarter was around $14,500 so I should expect somewhere in the $270-280 range then?

•Yeah that sounds about right. Keep in mind they'll take out federal taxes unless you opt out, so your actual deposit will be a bit less.

The maximum weekly benefit in Washington is $999 for 2025, but most people don't qualify for that much. You need to have made over $50,000 in your base year to get close to the max. Your $52k should put you in a decent range though.

•Good to know there's a cap! I definitely wasn't expecting anywhere near $999 but it's helpful to know the range.

•Wait, how do they determine the base year? Is it the last 12 months or calendar year?

•It's based on the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file. So if you file in January 2025, they'd look at quarters from 2024 and maybe part of 2023.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my benefit calculation because the online portal shows a different amount than what I expected. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there? I keep getting hung up on after being on hold forever.

•OMG yes the phone system is horrible! I finally got through using this service called Claimyr that calls for you and gets you connected to an actual person. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration.

•I had the same problem and ended up messaging them through the secure portal. It took about a week to get a response but at least I got an answer eventually.

just got my first payment yesterday and it was exactly what the calculator on the esd website said it would be so at least that part works lol. took 3 weeks to get approved though

•That's encouraging! How long did the whole process take from filing to getting your first payment?

•filed on a tuesday, got approved the next friday, then had to wait for the following week to do my first weekly claim. so about 2.5 weeks total

One thing to remember is that you can have up to 10% taken out for federal taxes when you set up your claim. Some people forget about this and then get surprised at tax time when they owe money. Better to have it taken out upfront if you can afford the slightly smaller weekly payment.

•Good point! I didn't even think about the tax implications. I'll make sure to set that up when I file.

•Can you change the tax withholding after you've already filed your claim?

Carmen Ruiz
•Yes, you can update your tax withholding preferences in your eServices account at any time during your claim.

The whole system is such a mess. I made $48K last year and I'm only getting $286 per week which barely covers my rent let alone everything else. How are people supposed to survive on this?

•I feel you. The benefit amounts haven't kept up with cost of living at all. That's why they keep extending the benefit periods during economic downturns.

•At least you're getting something. I'm still waiting for my adjudication to finish after 5 weeks. Can't even get anyone on the phone to tell me what's taking so long.

Mei Wong
•That's exactly why I used Claimyr - I was in adjudication limbo for weeks and needed to talk to someone to understand what was happening with my claim. Worth every penny to get through to an actual agent.

For anyone trying to estimate their benefits, Washington ESD has a benefit calculator on their website that's pretty accurate. You'll need your quarterly earnings from the past 18 months though. The formula is: (Highest quarter wages ÷ 26) × 0.50 = weekly benefit amount.

•Thanks for the formula! That's way clearer than the explanation on their website.

•Is there a minimum benefit amount? What if someone only worked part-time?
0 coins
Andre Lefebvre
•Yes, the minimum weekly benefit in Washington is $295 for 2025. But you still need to meet the earnings requirements to qualify at all.

I'm confused about something - do they count overtime when calculating your benefit amount? I worked a lot of OT last year but I don't know if that helps or hurts my claim.

Carmen Ruiz
•Yes, overtime counts toward your total wages for benefit calculation purposes. Any wages reported to Washington ESD by your employer get included.

Zoe Alexopoulos
•That's good news then! I probably made an extra $8K in overtime last year.

Pro tip: make sure all your employers from the past 18 months are listed correctly on your claim. I had to get Washington ESD to add a job that wasn't showing up and it increased my weekly benefit by $50.

•How did you get them to add the missing employer? Did you have to provide pay stubs or something?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Farsi
•I had to send them copies of my W-2 and final pay stub through the secure message system. Took about 2 weeks to get it updated.

•I'm pretty sure one of my employers isn't showing up either but I can't get through to anyone to fix it. This is so frustrating.

Does anyone know if the benefit amount changes if you get a part-time job while on unemployment? I might have a chance to work a few hours a week but I don't want to mess up my claim.

Andre Lefebvre
•You can work part-time and still collect benefits, but they'll reduce your weekly payment based on how much you earn. Generally, you can earn up to about 1/3 of your weekly benefit amount without any reduction.

Dylan Wright
•That's helpful! So if I'm getting $300/week I could earn up to $100 without penalty?
0 coins
Andre Lefebvre
•Exactly, but you still have to report all earnings when you file your weekly claim. Be honest about it or you could face an overpayment.

The whole process would be so much easier if you could actually talk to someone at Washington ESD when you have questions. I spent 6 hours on the phone yesterday and never got through to a human.

•I keep telling people about Claimyr but nobody wants to listen. I used it three times now and always get connected within an hour instead of wasting my whole day on hold.

•What exactly is Claimyr? Is it like a callback service?

Mei Wong
•It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and waits on hold, then calls you back when they get an agent on the line. Way better than sitting there listening to hold music for hours.

just remember that unemployment is temporary - the goal is to find another job not live on benefits forever. that said the weekly amounts definitely help bridge the gap while you're searching

For OP - based on your $52K salary, you're probably looking at somewhere between $280-320 per week depending on how your earnings were distributed throughout the year. Not great but better than nothing while you job hunt.

Yuki Sato
•Thanks for the estimate! That's pretty much what I was hoping for. Should be enough to cover my basic expenses while I look for something new.

•Just make sure you're actively job searching and keeping track of your contacts. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.
