Washington ESD unemployment eligibility - quit job last month, need help understanding rules
I quit my retail job at the end of last month because my manager was creating a hostile work environment and I couldn't take it anymore. Now I'm wondering if I can still file for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've heard conflicting information about whether quitting makes you ineligible. Does anyone know the specific rules for Washington state? I really need the income while I look for something new but don't want to waste time filing if I'm automatically disqualified.

In Washington state, you can potentially qualify for unemployment even if you quit, but it has to be for what they call 'good cause.' Hostile work environment could qualify, but you'll need to document everything and be prepared for your claim to go through adjudication.

•What kind of documentation would I need? I have some text messages from coworkers about the situation but not much else.

•Text messages are good! Also any emails, witness statements, or records of complaints you made to HR. The more evidence the better for the adjudication process.

def file anyway, worst case they deny it but you might get approved. i quit my job last year for similar reasons and got benefits after like 6 weeks of waiting

•6 weeks is a long time to wait though. Were you able to get through to someone at Washington ESD to check on your claim status?

•lol good luck calling them, i tried for weeks and never got through. just had to wait it out

I had a similar situation and found that using Claimyr really helped me get through to Washington ESD when my quit-related claim was stuck in adjudication. The service calls repeatedly until they connect you with an actual agent who can explain what documentation they need for your specific case. Check out claimyr.com - there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service before. How much does it cost to use?

•They focus on value rather than cost - honestly when you're stuck in adjudication limbo for weeks it's worth whatever they charge to finally talk to someone who can move your claim forward.

•I'm always skeptical of services like this but if it actually works... the Washington ESD phone system is absolutely broken

The Washington ESD will look at whether you had 'good cause attributable to the employer' for quitting. Hostile work environment can qualify but they're pretty strict about what constitutes good cause. You'll need to prove the employer's actions were unreasonable and that you attempted to resolve the situation before quitting.

•I did try talking to my manager about the issues but they just brushed me off. Should I have gone higher up the chain?

Aurora St.Pierre
•Ideally yes, but if your manager was the problem and there was no HR department or higher management accessible, that could work in your favor. Document everything you can remember about your attempts to resolve it.

UGH the whole system is so frustrating!! I've been waiting 3 months for them to make a decision on my quit-related claim and can't get anyone on the phone to tell me what's happening. Meanwhile my savings are almost gone and I'm applying everywhere but the job market is terrible right now.

•3 months is way too long for adjudication. Have you tried filing an appeal or complaint about the delay?

•How do I even do that when I can't get through to anyone? The whole system is designed to make you give up.

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr - after 2 months of trying to reach Washington ESD myself, they got me connected within a day and I found out my claim was missing one document that was holding everything up.

be careful about how you phrase things when you file. don't say you quit because of stress or because you didn't like your job. focus on specific actions by the employer that made continuing work unreasonable

•Good point. The manager was making discriminatory comments and scheduling me for shifts I couldn't work after I told them about my class schedule.

•that's much better! discriminatory comments and refusing reasonable accommodation requests are both good cause. make sure you mention those specifically

I work in HR and see this all the time. Washington ESD takes quit cases seriously but they will investigate. Your former employer will get a chance to respond to your claim and provide their side of the story. Be honest and stick to facts.

•Will my employer know that I filed for unemployment? I'm worried about burning bridges if I need a reference.

Nora Brooks
•Yes, employers are notified when former employees file claims. But if you truly had good cause to quit, you shouldn't worry about protecting an employer who created a hostile environment.

•exactly! if they were treating you badly enough that you had to quit, they probably aren't going to give you a good reference anyway

File as soon as possible because there's a waiting period anyway. Even if your claim gets denied initially, you can appeal and at least get the process started. The longer you wait, the more money you're potentially losing.

•That's a good point. I've been putting it off because I wasn't sure if I qualified but I should just go ahead and apply.

Cassandra Moon
•Exactly. The worst they can say is no, and if you have legitimate good cause reasons, you'll probably win on appeal even if the initial decision goes against you.

My sister quit her job for similar reasons and it took 8 weeks but she eventually got approved. The key was having documentation of the hostile behavior and showing she tried to address it before quitting.

Olivia Evans
•8 weeks is better than never getting approved I guess. Did she have to do anything special during the waiting period?

Zane Hernandez
•She kept applying for jobs and documenting her job search in case they asked for it later. Also gathered more evidence while waiting for the decision.

washington esd is backed up like crazy right now, my claim took forever and i got laid off which should have been straightforward. if you quit you're looking at even longer waits probably

Olivia Evans
•Great, that's not encouraging. Did you eventually get through to talk to someone about the delay?

•nope never got through by calling normally. honestly thinking about trying that claimyr thing people mentioned

I successfully appealed a denied quit claim last year. The key is being very specific about dates, incidents, and how they affected your ability to continue working. Vague complaints about 'bad management' won't cut it.

Olivia Evans
•How long did the appeal process take? And did you need a lawyer?
0 coins
Ethan Scott
•Appeal took about 6 weeks and I didn't use a lawyer. Just organized my evidence well and was clear about the timeline of events. The hearing was over the phone and lasted maybe 30 minutes.

Whatever you do, don't lie on your application. They will find out and it's fraud. Be honest about quitting but frame it in terms of the employer's actions that made continuing work impossible.

Olivia Evans
•I definitely won't lie about it. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to explain the situation so they understand it was justified.

•Focus on objective facts rather than how the situation made you feel. 'Manager made discriminatory comments on X date' rather than 'Manager made me feel uncomfortable.

The job search requirement is still in effect even if you quit, so start documenting your job applications now. You'll need to show you're actively looking for work once your claim is processed.

•How many job applications do I need to submit per week? I've been applying but not keeping detailed records.
0 coins
Nathaniel Stewart
•I think it's 3 per week minimum but check the current requirements on the Washington ESD website. Keep records of where you applied, when, and what position.

I tried Claimyr after seeing it mentioned here and it actually worked! Got connected to a Washington ESD agent within 2 days and found out my quit claim was approved but they needed updated banking info. Would have been waiting months otherwise.

Olivia Evans
•That's encouraging! So it's worth trying even for quit-related claims that are stuck in adjudication?
0 coins
Riya Sharma
•Definitely. The agent was able to see exactly what was holding up my claim and what I needed to do to move it forward. Much better than guessing.

same boat as you, quit my job because of harassment and filed for UI. still waiting after 5 weeks but at least i know the process is moving forward now

Olivia Evans
•How do you know it's moving forward? Did you get some kind of update from Washington ESD?

Santiago Diaz
•yeah they sent a letter asking for more info about the circumstances of my quit. annoying but at least someone is looking at it

File now! Even if you get denied initially, you can appeal and the worst case is you're in the same position you're in now. But if you qualify, you're losing money every day you wait.

Olivia Evans
•You're right, I need to stop overthinking it and just submit the application. Thanks for the push!

•Good luck! Just remember to be thorough with your documentation and specific about what made quitting necessary.

UPDATE: I used that Claimyr service after reading about it here and finally got through to Washington ESD about my quit claim. Turns out they needed a written statement from me about the hostile work environment. Agent said my case looks good for approval once I submit it. Game changer!

•That's exactly what I needed to hear! I'm going to try Claimyr too since regular calling isn't working.

•Do it! The peace of mind from actually talking to someone who can see your file is worth it. No more wondering what's happening with your claim.
