Washington ESD unemployment benefits - how much do I get weekly?

Just got laid off from my retail job last week and I'm trying to figure out how much my weekly unemployment benefit will be through Washington ESD. I was making about $18/hour working around 35-40 hours per week. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? I heard it's based on your wages but I can't find a clear explanation of the formula anywhere on the Washington ESD website.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount using your highest earning quarter from your base period. The maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is around $1015 but most people get way less than that. They take your total wages from your highest quarter and divide by 26 to get your weekly amount.

0 coins

So if I made like $6,500 in my best quarter that would be around $250 per week? That seems low compared to what I was making.

0 coins

Yeah that sounds about right. UI benefits are designed to replace about 50% of your wages, not your full income. It's meant to be temporary assistance while you look for work.

the benefit calculator on washington esd website never worked for me, always gave me errors when i tried to estimate my amount

0 coins

Same here! I ended up having to wait until my claim was processed to find out my actual weekly benefit amount. Really frustrating when you're trying to budget.

0 coins

exactly! like how are we supposed to plan anything when we dont know what we'll get

0 coins

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about your benefit calculation, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

0 coins

Is that legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days and can never get through.

0 coins

Yeah it's real. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Worth it when you need actual answers about your claim.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? Seems like we're already broke if we're filing for unemployment.

0 coins

The formula is actually more complicated than just dividing by 26. Washington ESD looks at ALL four quarters in your base period, not just the highest one. They add up your two highest quarters and then calculate from there. Plus there's a minimum weekly benefit of like $295 I think.

0 coins

You're partially right but it's not that simple either. The minimum is actually lower than that, around $201 for 2025. And they do use your highest quarter primarily for the calculation.

0 coins

I might be mixing up the old rules with the new ones. This stuff changes every year and Washington ESD doesn't make it easy to understand.

0 coins

ugh another person asking about benefit amounts... just file your claim and wait like the rest of us did

0 coins

I'm just trying to plan my budget dude, chill out

0 coins

We all had to figure this out at some point. No need to be rude about someone asking a legitimate question.

0 coins

Your weekly benefit amount also depends on if you work any part-time hours while collecting. Washington ESD has this weird formula where they reduce your benefits if you earn more than a certain amount each week. I think it's like $275 or something before they start deducting from your weekly claim.

0 coins

Good to know! I might pick up some gig work while I'm looking for full-time employment.

0 coins

Just make sure you report ALL earnings on your weekly claim. Washington ESD will find out eventually and then you'll have an overpayment to deal with.

Mei Liu

The earnings deduction threshold changes every year too. Best to check the current amount on their website or ask an agent.

0 coins

I made decent money at my last job and my weekly benefit is only $487. The system really penalizes higher earners because there's that maximum cap. Someone making $25/hour doesn't get proportionally more than someone making $15/hour.

0 coins

That's still way more than I'll probably get. At least you're getting close to $500 a week.

0 coins

True, but when your rent is $1800/month that $487 doesn't go very far. The whole system needs an overhaul.

0 coins

Don't forget about the waiting week! Washington ESD makes you wait one week before you start getting paid, even if your claim is approved right away. So factor that into your planning.

0 coins

Wait what? So even if everything goes smoothly I won't get paid for the first week?

0 coins

Exactly. It's called a waiting week and it's just lost money. One of the many ways the system screws over unemployed people.

0 coins

Some states got rid of the waiting week during COVID but Washington still has it unfortunately.

0 coins

The base period they use for calculating benefits is usually from like 15 months ago to 3 months ago, not recent wages. So if you just started a higher paying job recently, it won't count toward your benefit amount. Really frustrating when you get laid off from a good job but your benefits are based on when you were making less money.

0 coins

Ugh that's exactly my situation. I got a raise 6 months ago but I guess that won't help my unemployment amount.

0 coins

Yeah the timing is terrible. They should use more recent wages but the system is stuck in the stone age.

0 coins

Has anyone had success using that Claimyr service mentioned earlier? I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for two weeks about my benefit calculation and I'm about to lose my mind.

0 coins

Yeah I used it last month when I had questions about my adjudication. Got through to an agent in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day calling. Definitely worth it.

0 coins

Ok I'm going to check out their website. This is ridiculous that we need a third party service just to talk to our own state agency.

0 coins

The fact that services like Claimyr even exist shows how broken Washington ESD's phone system is. But hey, at least there's a solution.

0 coins

Pro tip: your benefit amount will show up in your eServices account once your claim is processed. Don't stress too much about calculating it beforehand because Washington ESD's system will do it automatically based on their records of your wages.

0 coins

Good point. I guess I'm just anxious about the whole process and want to know what to expect.

0 coins

Totally understandable! The uncertainty is the worst part of being unemployed. Just try to be patient with the process.

0 coins

remember you also have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits! they dont automatically withhold federal taxes unless you request it, so you might owe money next tax season

0 coins

Oh crap I didn't even think about taxes. How do I request withholding?

0 coins

you can do it when you file your claim or change it later in your eservices account. they'll take out 10% for federal taxes if you want

0 coins

The benefit amount also affects how long you can collect. In Washington you get up to 26 weeks of regular unemployment, but if you're getting a higher weekly amount you'll reach the maximum total benefit sooner.

0 coins

Wait so higher benefits means less weeks? That doesn't make sense.

0 coins

It's because there's both a weekly maximum AND a total maximum benefit amount. So if your weekly amount is high, you'll hit the total cap before 26 weeks.

0 coins

Actually that's not quite right. The 26 weeks is pretty standard regardless of your weekly amount, unless you're getting an unusually high benefit.

0 coins

I used Claimyr recently when I had questions about my benefit reduction due to part-time work. The agent was super helpful in explaining exactly how the earnings deduction formula works. Much better than trying to decode Washington ESD's confusing website.

0 coins

That's good to hear. I might need to use them once I start getting benefits and have specific questions.

0 coins

Yeah it's nice to actually talk to a human who can look at your specific situation instead of trying to figure out generic information online.

0 coins

Just keep in mind that your first payment might be delayed even after your claim is approved. Washington ESD has been having processing delays and IT issues lately, so don't panic if your payment is a few days late.

0 coins

Great, more things to worry about. This whole system seems designed to stress people out.

0 coins

I know it's frustrating but most people do eventually get their benefits. Just try to have some backup funds if possible while things get sorted out.

0 coins

at least washington has decent benefit amounts compared to some states. i have a friend in florida who gets like $275 max per week no matter what they made before

0 coins

Wow that's terrible. I guess I should be grateful for whatever I get here.

0 coins

yeah washington is actually pretty generous with unemployment compared to most places. the max benefit here is over $1000 which is way higher than most states

0 coins

Your benefit amount should be in your determination letter once Washington ESD processes your claim. That letter will also explain exactly how they calculated your weekly amount and your maximum total benefits. Keep that letter safe because you'll need it if you ever have to appeal anything.

0 coins

How long does it usually take to get that determination letter?

0 coins

It varies but usually within 1-2 weeks if there are no issues with your claim. Could be longer if they need to verify your employment or wages.

0 coins

Bottom line - your weekly benefit will probably be somewhere between 40-60% of your average weekly wages from your base period. It's not going to replace your full income but it's better than nothing while you job search.

0 coins

That helps put it in perspective. I just need to adjust my expectations and budget accordingly.

0 coins

Exactly. Think of it as a bridge to help you get by until you find your next job, not a long-term income replacement.
