Washington ESD timing - when to file unemployment after job loss?
Lost my job yesterday due to company downsizing and I'm wondering about the right timing for filing my Washington ESD claim. Should I file immediately or wait? I heard there's a waiting period anyway so does it matter when I submit my application? Also not sure if I should file online or call - the website seems pretty straightforward but want to make sure I don't mess anything up that could delay my benefits.

File as soon as possible! Your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file, not when you actually lost your job. So if you wait, you're literally losing money. The waiting period is just one week and it's built into the system - you still need to file your weekly claims during that time.

•Thanks! So even though there's a waiting week I should still file my weekly claims?

•Yes exactly - you file weekly claims but just don't get paid for the first week. But if you don't file those claims you can lose eligibility.

definitely file online at esd.wa.gov, way faster than calling. took me maybe 30 minutes to complete the whole application. just have your employment history ready for the last 18 months

•Good point about having employment history ready. Do I need exact dates or just approximate?

Raúl Mora
•exact dates if you have them, but approximate is ok too. they'll verify with employers anyway

I'll add that you should file even if you think you might get called back to work soon. You can always stop filing weekly claims if you get rehired, but if it takes longer than expected you'll already be in the system. Washington ESD can take weeks to process initial claims sometimes, especially if there are any issues that need adjudication.

•This is so true! I waited 3 weeks thinking I'd get called back and then had to wait another month for my claim to get processed. Wish I'd filed right away.

•That's exactly what I was worried about - waiting too long and then having processing delays on top of it.

One thing that helped me was using Claimyr when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD to ask questions about my filing. They have this service at claimyr.com that helps you actually reach an agent when you call. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Was super helpful when I had questions about my specific situation.

•Never heard of that but sounds interesting. Did you actually get through to someone at Washington ESD?

•Yeah, it connected me within like 20 minutes instead of the usual busy signals and hang-ups. Really helped when I needed to understand some stuff about my claim status.

UGHHH the timing thing is so confusing!! I filed on a Tuesday and was told my benefit week starts the Sunday before that Tuesday?? Like how does that even make sense if I wasnt unemployed on Sunday???

•I know it's weird but that's just how the system works. The benefit week always starts on Sunday regardless of when you file during that week.

•ok but what if I was still working on that Sunday? do I report those hours?

Arjun Kurti
•Yes, you report any work and wages for the entire week when you file your weekly claim, even if you only worked part of that week.

File immediately but make sure you have all your documents ready first. Last employer info, reason for separation, your social security number obviously. The online application will time out if you take too long so better to have everything prepared.

•How long does the session stay active? I tend to second-guess myself on forms.

•I think it's like 30 minutes but don't quote me on that. Just have your info ready and you'll be fine.

been there done that - file TODAY if you can. every day you wait is money down the drain since your benefit year starts when you file not when you got laid off

•Yeah that seems to be the consensus here. Going to file this afternoon.

Also don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource Washington for the job search requirements. You can do this right after filing your UI claim. It's required to keep getting benefits so don't put it off.

•Is that a separate website or part of the ESD site?

Liam Brown
•Separate site - worksourcewa.com. You'll need to create a profile and start logging job search activities.

•how many job searches do you need to do per week? I keep seeing different numbers

Liam Brown
•It's 3 job search activities per week but they can include things like attending job fairs, networking events, not just applications.

Question about the waiting week - do you still have to do job search activities during that week even though you won't get paid?

Arjun Kurti
•Yes, the job search requirements start immediately when you file your first weekly claim, even during the waiting week.

•Ugh ok thanks for clarifying. Guess I better start looking right away then.

I made the mistake of waiting 2 weeks to file because I thought I needed to be officially 'unemployed' for a certain period first. WRONG. Cost me those 2 weeks of benefits that I'll never get back. File immediately!!!

•Ouch that's expensive lesson. Definitely filing today then.

•same thing happened to my sister, she waited thinking she had to have been unemployed for a week first or something

Pro tip: if you file late in the evening or on weekends, sometimes the system is slower or might have maintenance. I'd recommend filing during normal business hours if possible, just in case you run into technical issues and need help.

•Good thinking. I'll do it this afternoon during business hours.

What about if you got severance pay? Does that affect when you should file or delay your benefits?
0 coins
Arjun Kurti
•You should still file right away. Severance might delay when you start receiving benefits but it won't change when your benefit year starts. Better to get the claim started and let ESD sort out the severance impact.

•Ok that makes sense. I was worried about messing something up by filing too early.

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible if you need to call with questions. Took me literally 47 tries to get through last month. Found out about Claimyr from someone on Reddit and it actually worked - got connected to an agent in under 30 minutes. Definitely worth checking out if you run into issues.

•47 tries?? That's insane. How does Claimyr work exactly?

•It's like a callback system that keeps trying to reach ESD for you and then connects you when they get through. Way better than sitting there hitting redial all day.

just to echo everyone else - FILE ASAP. I waited 4 days thinking it didn't matter and basically lost almost a week's worth of benefits. The system doesn't backdate to when you actually lost your job, only to when you file the claim.

•Yep, message received loud and clear. Filing in a couple hours once I get my paperwork together.

One more thing - make sure you file your weekly claims EVERY week even if your claim is still pending or in adjudication. I know someone who stopped filing weekly claims while waiting for their initial claim to be approved and then had to restart the whole process.
0 coins
Ellie Simpson
•Wait, so even if my initial claim isn't approved yet, I still need to file weekly claims?
0 coins
Amelia Martinez
•Yes! You have to maintain continuous weekly filing or you can lose your place in line. Keep filing those weekly claims no matter what.

If you're still having trouble getting through to ESD for questions, there's also Claimyr which I used when my claim went into adjudication. They help you actually reach an agent instead of getting the busy signal runaround. Really saved me a lot of frustration.

•How much does something like that cost?

•I don't remember exactly but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of wasting hours trying to call. Check their site claimyr.com for current info.
