Washington ESD timing - when should I apply for unemployment benefits?
Lost my job at a retail store last Friday and I'm trying to figure out the best timing for filing my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Should I apply right away or wait until I've been out of work for a certain period? I keep seeing conflicting advice online about when to start the application process. Also worried about messing up the timing and losing out on benefits I'm entitled to. Anyone know the optimal timing for Washington ESD applications?

You should apply as soon as possible after losing your job. Washington ESD has a waiting week, but you want to get your application in right away to start the process. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed and approved.

•Thanks! I was worried I needed to wait a week or something. I'll start the application today.

•Yeah don't wait - I made that mistake and it delayed everything by like 2 weeks

Apply immediately but be prepared for potential delays. Washington ESD recommends filing within the first week of unemployment. You'll need your employer information, Social Security number, and details about why you lost your job. Make sure you have all your documentation ready before starting the online application.

•What kind of employer information do they need exactly? Just basic stuff like address and phone number?

•You'll need employer name, address, phone number, dates of employment, and your reason for separation. Also helpful to have your last pay stub handy for wage verification.

I tried calling Washington ESD to ask about timing but couldn't get through after 2 hours of trying. Their phone system is absolutely terrible - keeps hanging up on me after being on hold forever. How is anyone supposed to get help with their unemployment claims?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Finally got through to ask about my claim status after weeks of trying on my own.

•Really? That actually works? I'm so desperate at this point I'll try anything to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•Yeah it's legit. They handle all the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than wasting hours on hold.

APPLY IMMEDIATELY!!! I waited 3 days thinking I needed to job search first and it was a huge mistake. Washington ESD backdate is possible but creates more paperwork and delays. File your initial claim the day after your last day of work if possible.

Kayla Jacobson
•Oh no, did the 3 day delay cause problems with your benefits?

•It delayed my first payment by about a week. Not the end of the world but every day counts when you need the money.

same question here, got laid off tuesday and been putting off filing because the washington esd website looks confusing

William Rivera
•Don't put it off any longer! The website is actually pretty straightforward once you get started. Just have your information ready and take it step by step.

There's actually a strategic element to timing your application. If you file on Sunday, your benefit week starts on Sunday. If you file on Wednesday, it still starts the following Sunday. So filing earlier in the week vs later doesn't change your benefit week start date, but it does affect processing time.

Kayla Jacobson
•That's really helpful to know about the Sunday start date. I had no idea it worked that way.

•Yeah Washington ESD benefit weeks always run Sunday to Saturday regardless of when you file during the week.

I filed the same day I got fired and still waited 3 weeks for my first payment. The timing of your application is less important than making sure you file your weekly claims on time once your initial claim is approved.

•3 weeks seems like a really long time. Was there an issue with your claim or is that normal?

•There was some adjudication issue they had to resolve. Most claims process faster but mine got flagged for some reason.

•Adjudication can definitely slow things down. That's when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim before approving benefits.

Quick question - do you have to be actively job searching before you can apply for unemployment? Or can you apply first and then start the job search requirement?

William Rivera
•You can apply first. The job search requirement kicks in after your claim is approved and you start filing weekly claims. But you should start looking for work regardless.

•Perfect, that makes sense. I wanted to get the claim filed before spending all my time on job applications.

Been there! The key thing is don't overthink it. File as soon as you can after losing your job. Washington ESD will walk you through everything step by step. The online application is actually pretty user-friendly once you get started.

•Thanks for the encouragement. I've been procrastinating because it seems overwhelming but I need to just do it.

I applied 2 weeks after getting laid off and had to request backdating. It was approved but added extra steps to the process. Would definitely recommend applying within the first few days if possible.

•Good to know backdating is possible though, just in case I mess up the timing somehow.

•Yeah they're pretty reasonable about it if you have a good reason for the delay. But easier to just file right away.

Make sure you understand the difference between filing your initial claim and filing weekly claims. You file the initial claim once when you first lose your job, then you file weekly claims every week to actually receive payments.
0 coins
Kayla Jacobson
•So the initial claim is just to get into the system, and then weekly claims are what trigger the actual payments?
0 coins
Daniel Washington
•Exactly! Initial claim establishes your eligibility and benefit amount. Weekly claims are what you file every week to certify you're still unemployed and looking for work.

The waiting week thing confuses a lot of people. In Washington, you have a one-week waiting period before benefits start, but you still need to file a weekly claim for that week. You just don't get paid for it.

Kayla Jacobson
•So I file weekly claims even during the waiting week? That seems weird but okay.
0 coins
Aurora Lacasse
•Yep, you still have to file the weekly claim to satisfy the waiting week requirement. Just no payment for that first week.

washington esd is so backed up right now, took me 6 weeks to get approved and i filed immediately. the system is just overwhelmed

•6 weeks?! That's crazy. Were you able to get help or did you just have to wait it out?

Pro tip: Apply online rather than trying to call. The online system is available 24/7 and you can take your time filling everything out correctly. Calling just adds unnecessary frustration to the process.

•Yeah I was planning to do it online anyway. The phone system sounds like a nightmare from what everyone's saying.

For anyone struggling with Washington ESD phone issues, I mentioned Claimyr earlier but wanted to add that it's been a game changer for me. I used it twice - once to check on my claim status during adjudication and once to ask about my job search requirements. Both times got connected to an agent within an hour instead of spending all day calling.

•I'm definitely going to try this. Spent another 3 hours on hold yesterday and got disconnected again.

•How much does something like that cost? Sounds too good to be true.

•It's worth it when you consider how much time you save. Way cheaper than taking unpaid time off work to sit on hold all day.

I'm in a similar situation - lost my job on Monday and planning to file tomorrow. This thread has been really helpful for understanding the timing. Sounds like sooner is definitely better than later.

One thing to remember is that even if you file immediately, there can still be delays if Washington ESD needs additional information or if there are questions about your separation from employment. The sooner you file, the sooner any issues can be identified and resolved.

Kayla Jacobson
•That makes sense. Better to get any potential problems sorted out early rather than waiting.

Final thought - don't let fear of making mistakes prevent you from filing. Washington ESD can help you correct any errors, but they can't help you if you don't file at all. The most important thing is getting your claim started as soon as possible after job loss.

•Thank you everyone for all the advice! I feel much more confident about filing now. Going to start my application right after dinner.
