this whole thread makes me realize how complicated unemployment benefits are. no wonder so many people have trouble with the system
Final thought - make sure your brother has all his wage information ready when he applies. Pay stubs, W-2s, 1099s, anything that shows his earnings. Washington ESD uses this to calculate his base period wages and determine his benefit amount if he qualifies. Having everything organized upfront makes the process much smoother.
I want to emphasize that Washington ESD has really good resources on their website about eligibility. They have a whole section that walks through different scenarios - part-time workers, seasonal workers, people who quit, people who were fired, etc. It's worth reading through that before you file.
Last thing - make sure you file your claim as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. There's no waiting period in Washington, and you can't get benefits for weeks before you file your claim. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits if you qualify.
I was in the exact same situation last year. Worked part-time retail while collecting unemployment for about 4 months. Just stayed on top of reporting and job searching and everything worked out fine. The extra income really helped during a tough time.
If you do run into any issues or have questions after you start working, definitely try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I've heard good things about it from other people dealing with Washington ESD complications.

For anyone getting close to their limit - make sure you understand the difference between benefit year ending and exhausting benefits. They're two different things that can happen at different times.

•Can you explain that more? I'm not sure I understand the difference.

•Your benefit year is 12 months from when you first filed. You can collect up to 26 weeks within that year. So you could exhaust your 26 weeks early, or reach the end of your benefit year with weeks unused.
