How soon can you claim unemployment after losing your job in Washington?
Lost my job yesterday due to company downsizing and I'm wondering how quickly I can file for Washington ESD unemployment benefits. Do I need to wait a certain period or can I apply right away? I've never been through this process before and really need to know the timeline since I have bills coming up. Also, when would my first payment actually come through if I file today?

You can file your unemployment claim immediately - there's no waiting period to submit your application. The sooner you file, the better because your benefit year starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. Go to the Washington ESD website and start your claim ASAP.

•Thank you! I'll get started on that right now. Do you know roughly how long it takes to get approved?

•If everything goes smoothly and there are no issues with your claim, you could see your first payment in 2-3 weeks. But if they need to verify anything, it could take longer.

File TODAY if you can. I made the mistake of waiting a week thinking I needed to give my employer time to process paperwork or something. That was a week of benefits I lost forever because you can't backdate claims in Washington.

•Wow, good to know! I definitely don't want to lose any potential benefits.

•Wait, you can't backdate at all? That seems harsh if someone doesn't know the rules.

•Nope, Washington ESD is pretty strict about this. Your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file your initial claim.

Make sure you have all your information ready before you start - SSN, employment history for the last 18 months, your employer's info, etc. The application process can take 30-45 minutes if you're prepared.

•Thanks for the heads up! I'll gather everything together first.

Just be aware that even if you file today, there's still a one-week waiting period before you can receive your first payment. So if you file this week, the earliest you'd get paid is for the second week of your claim.

•Is that waiting week just completely unpaid then?

Chloe Wilson
•Yes, the first week is unpaid. It's called the 'waiting week' and everyone has to serve it unless you qualify for certain exceptions.

•That's frustrating but I guess I understand why they do it.

Don't forget you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually get your money, even after you're approved. I see people get approved and then forget to file their weekly claims and wonder where their money is.

•How do the weekly claims work exactly?

Anastasia Romanov
•Every week you have to log into your account and answer questions about whether you looked for work, if you worked any hours, if you turned down any job offers, stuff like that.

I filed mine about 3 weeks ago and I'm still waiting. My claim is stuck in adjudication because they need to verify my employment history or something. It's been impossible to get anyone on the phone at Washington ESD to explain what's happening.

•Oh no, that sounds really stressful. Have you tried calling early in the morning?
0 coins
Freya Johansen
•I've tried everything - calling right when they open, during lunch, different days of the week. Either busy signal or I get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours.

•Have you heard of Claimyr? I used them when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD and they actually got me connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but I'm willing to try anything at this point. The stress of not knowing what's happening with my claim is killing me.

UPDATE: I filed my claim this morning! The process was actually pretty straightforward once I had all my documents ready. Now I guess I just wait and see what happens.

•Good job getting it filed quickly! Remember to file your first weekly claim this Sunday.

•Way to go! You did the right thing filing immediately.

For anyone else reading this - you also need to register with WorkSource Washington for the job search requirements. Don't wait on that either because you'll need to show you're actively looking for work.

Isabella Silva
•Oh I didn't know about that requirement. Is that separate from the unemployment claim?
0 coins
Sean Kelly
•Yes, it's a separate registration but it's required. You need to do 3 job search activities per week and keep a log of them.

•The job search requirements are no joke. Make sure you're documenting everything properly because they do audit claims.

I remember when I filed mine I was so confused about the whole process. Wish I had found a forum like this beforehand! The Washington ESD website has the information but it's not always clear what order to do things in.

•Yeah, there's definitely a learning curve. At least now I know to file weekly claims religiously.

Quick question - if you're laid off on a Friday, do you file that same day or wait until the following week starts?
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
•File the same day if possible. Your benefit week runs Sunday to Saturday, so filing on Friday means you're already partway through your first week.
0 coins
Chloe Wilson
•Exactly, and remember that first week is the unpaid waiting week anyway, so you want to get it started as soon as possible.

Does anyone know if the processing time is different if you're laid off versus fired? I was terminated for attendance issues and I'm worried that will slow things down.
0 coins
Chloe Wilson
•If you were fired for cause, your claim will likely go into adjudication while they determine if you're eligible. That can add several weeks to the process.

Mateo Rodriguez
•That's what I was afraid of. Should I still file right away even if I think it might get denied?
0 coins
Chloe Wilson
•Absolutely file right away. Even if they initially deny you, you can appeal, and the sooner you start the process the better.

I had a similar experience to @5 with getting stuck in adjudication. After weeks of trying to call Washington ESD, I ended up using Claimyr to get through. It was honestly a lifesaver because I was about to lose my apartment.

•How long did it take them to get you connected?

•They called me back within a few hours and had me talking to an actual Washington ESD agent the same day. Finally got my adjudication issue resolved.

•I'm definitely going to try Claimyr tomorrow. This is ridiculous that we need a third party service just to talk to our own state agency.

One thing I learned the hard way - make sure your address is correct when you file. I had moved recently and forgot to update it, which caused a delay in getting my debit card.

Isabella Silva
•Good point! I just moved last month so I need to double-check that.

The whole system is frustrating but at least Washington's benefits are decent compared to some states. Just got to be patient with the process I guess.

•Fair point, I've been there too. The financial stress while waiting for approval is the worst part.

For what it's worth, I filed on a Monday and had my first payment deposited exactly 3 weeks later. No adjudication issues though, which probably helped.

•That gives me hope! Hopefully mine goes that smoothly.

•Three weeks is pretty typical if there are no complications. The key is filing immediately after job loss.

Don't forget about the tax implications either. Unemployment benefits are taxable income, so you might want to have them withhold taxes or set money aside.
0 coins
Isabella Silva
•Oh wow, I didn't even think about taxes. Thanks for mentioning that.
0 coins
Zoe Dimitriou
•Yeah, you can choose to have 10% withheld for federal taxes when you set up your claim. Saves you from a big tax bill later.

Just want to echo what everyone else said - file immediately! I waited 5 days thinking I needed to 'process' being laid off emotionally and it was 5 days of benefits I'll never get back.

Isabella Silva
•I'm really glad I asked here first. Seems like filing immediately is the unanimous advice.
0 coins
Jamal Anderson
•Yep, the emotional processing can happen while you're getting your benefits sorted out. Money first, feelings second when you're unemployed.

Last piece of advice - take screenshots of everything during the application process. If something goes wrong later, having documentation of what you submitted can be really helpful.

Isabella Silva
•Great tip! I'll make sure to do that.

•Also keep copies of all your employment documents, pay stubs, etc. Washington ESD might ask for verification later.

Honestly the hardest part for me wasn't filing the initial claim, it was remembering to file the weekly claims every single week. Set a reminder on your phone or calendar because missing even one week can mess things up.
0 coins
Isabella Silva
•When do you typically file your weekly claims? Is there a best day/time?
0 coins
Amara Eze
•I do mine every Sunday morning. The system is usually less busy then and it's a good way to start the week with that task done.
0 coins
Anastasia Romanov
•I set a recurring alarm for Sunday at 9am. After a few weeks it becomes routine.

Hope everything works out for you OP! The waiting and uncertainty is the worst part, but once you get into the rhythm of weekly claims and job searching, it becomes more manageable.
