How soon should I file for unemployment with Washington ESD after job loss?
Lost my job yesterday due to company downsizing and I'm wondering about timing for filing my unemployment claim. Should I file immediately or wait a few days? I heard there might be a waiting period anyway but I don't want to miss out on benefits I'm entitled to. Also not sure if I need to have all my paperwork ready before I start the application process with Washington ESD. Any advice on the best timing would be really helpful.

File as soon as possible! There's no benefit to waiting and your claim date starts from when you file, not when you lost your job. Washington ESD processes claims based on the filing date so every day you wait is potentially money lost.

•That makes sense, thank you! I was worried about filing too early but sounds like sooner is better.

•This is correct - I waited a week to file thinking I needed more time to gather documents and regretted it. The sooner you file with Washington ESD the better.

You should file your claim within the first week of unemployment. Washington ESD has a one-week unpaid waiting period anyway, so filing immediately doesn't mean you'll get paid immediately. But your benefit year starts from your claim date, and you want to maximize that time. You can file even if you don't have all your employment history details - you can update information later if needed.

•Good to know about the waiting period - I thought maybe I should wait that week out before filing but sounds like I should file now.

•Wait, is there still a waiting period? I thought they eliminated that during COVID?

•The waiting period is back as of 2023. It was temporarily waived during the pandemic but Washington ESD reinstated it.

I tried calling Washington ESD to ask about filing timing but couldn't get through after hours of trying. The phone system is impossible. Finally used claimyr.com to get connected to an actual person who confirmed I should file immediately. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Game changer for actually reaching someone at Washington ESD.

•Never heard of that service but if it helps get through to Washington ESD it might be worth checking out. Their phone system is definitely frustrating.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already worried about money being tight.

•It's worth it when you consider how much time you save not sitting on hold for hours. Much better than spending entire days trying to get through on your own.

file today if you can! the online system is usually easier in the morning before everyone else gets on. you'll need your social security number and employment history for the last 18 months but don't stress if you don't remember exact dates - close enough is fine for the initial filing

•Thanks for the tip about morning filing - I'll try to get on early tomorrow.

•18 months? I thought it was just the last year they needed for employment history.

Ella Cofer
•they ask for 18 months to make sure they have enough wage history to calculate your benefit amount properly

The key thing is that your benefits are calculated based on wages from your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. So filing sooner vs later in the same quarter won't change your benefit amount, but it will affect when your benefit year starts and ends.

Miguel Harvey
•That's helpful context - so the timing affects the benefit year but not necessarily the amount I'll get.

Felicity Bud
•This is getting confusing with all the quarters and base periods. Is there a simple way to understand this?

Oliver Cheng
•Think of it this way - they look at your wages from about 5-17 months ago to calculate benefits. Recent wages don't count, which is why filing timing doesn't change the benefit amount much.

I'm in the same situation - got laid off last week and still haven't filed because I've been stressed about doing it wrong. This thread is making me realize I need to just do it already instead of overthinking it.

•Same here! Better to file imperfectly than not file at all.

•Exactly - you can always correct information later if needed. Washington ESD allows updates to your claim.

Does anyone know if you can backdate your claim if you file late? Like if I lost my job a week ago but file today, will it start from when I lost my job or from today?
0 coins
Taylor To
•Washington ESD generally doesn't allow backdating unless you have a valid reason for the delay in filing. Your claim typically starts from the Sunday of the week you file.

Felix Grigori
•Good to know - another reason to file ASAP then.

Max Reyes
•There are some exceptions for backdating but you'd need to show good cause for why you couldn't file earlier. Better to just file right away.

The Washington ESD website says to file during your first week of unemployment. I think that's pretty clear guidance - don't wait around.

•Yeah, seems like everyone is saying the same thing - file immediately.

I was hesitant to file immediately after my layoff because I thought I might get called back, but my HR person told me to file anyway. If you get called back to work, you just stop claiming benefits. There's no penalty for filing and then not needing the benefits.

•That's a good point - filing doesn't lock you into anything, it just starts the process in case you need it.

Adrian Connor
•Exactly. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Plus if you do get called back, you might get laid off again later and already have an active claim.

The one week waiting period is annoying but at least it gives you time to figure out the weekly claiming process. You'll need to file every week even during that first unpaid week.

•Good reminder about the weekly claims - I'll need to set a reminder to do that.

For what it's worth, I filed on a Friday and had my first phone interview scheduled for the following Tuesday. Washington ESD moves pretty fast on initial processing, so don't delay if you need benefits.

Miguel Harvey
•Phone interview? Is that normal for all claims?
0 coins
Adrian Connor
•Not always, but they sometimes do eligibility interviews if they need clarification about your job separation. Nothing to worry about if you were laid off through no fault of your own.

•I had one of those interviews too - just basic questions about why I lost my job and whether I'm able and available to work.

Here's what I wish someone had told me: file immediately, but also start job searching right away because Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week. Don't wait until you start getting benefits to begin looking.

Miguel Harvey
•Good advice - I should start tracking my job search activities from day one.

I called Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and they confirmed you should file within the first week. The rep said they see people lose out on benefits all the time because they wait too long to file. Worth the cost to get actual confirmation from Washington ESD directly.

•I'm skeptical of paying for something that should be free, but if it actually works to reach Washington ESD then maybe it's worth it.

•I was skeptical too but after spending 6 hours on hold over two days with no success, paying for help seemed reasonable. Got through in 15 minutes.

The bottom line is that Washington ESD benefits are there for people who lose their jobs, so use them! File as soon as you're unemployed and don't feel guilty about it. You or your employer paid into the system specifically for this situation.

•Thanks for that perspective - I do feel a bit guilty about filing but you're right that it's what the system is for.

One more vote for filing immediately. I lost my job on a Tuesday and filed that same day. Had my first benefit payment exactly two weeks later. The system works best when you work with it quickly.

•This was just a few months ago, and I think I got lucky with no adjudication issues. Simple layoff, clear documentation, no complications.

Don't overthink it - just file. The worst thing that can happen is they say you're not eligible, but you won't know unless you try. The best thing is you get benefits to help you while you job search.

Just to add one more practical tip: have your banking information ready when you file so you can set up direct deposit right away. Much faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail.

Miguel Harvey
•Good tip - I'll have my bank account info ready when I file later today.

•The debit card option isn't bad either though. Some people prefer it for budgeting purposes.

One last thought: if you run into any issues with your claim after filing, that Claimyr service people mentioned might be helpful. I used it when my claim got stuck in adjudication and it really helped speed things up. The video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ shows exactly how it works.
