When do you apply for unemployment benefits after job loss in Washington?
Lost my job yesterday due to layoffs at my company and I'm wondering about timing for filing my unemployment claim. Should I apply right away or wait a few days? I heard there might be a waiting period but I'm not sure if that means I should delay applying or if Washington ESD handles that automatically. Also worried about missing some kind of deadline if I wait too long. This is my first time dealing with unemployment so any guidance would be helpful.

Apply as soon as possible! There's no benefit to waiting and you don't want to lose any potential benefits. Washington ESD recommends filing your claim the week you become unemployed or have your hours reduced. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed.

•Thanks! I was worried I might be jumping the gun but I'll file today then.

•Definitely don't wait - I made that mistake and lost a week of benefits that I couldn't get back.

The waiting period happens automatically - it's the first week of your claim where you don't get paid, but you still need to file that weekly claim. Washington ESD will handle all the timing on their end. Your job is just to get the initial application in and then file your weekly claims every week.

•Oh okay, so I still file weekly claims during the waiting week? I was confused about that part.

•Yes exactly! You file weekly claims starting your first week, you just don't get paid for that first week. It's automatic.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I first applied. Kept getting busy signals and getting hung up on when trying to check my claim status. If you run into phone issues, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a demo video too: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•Never heard of that but interesting. Did it actually work for you?

•Yeah it did! Saved me hours of calling and redialing. Got connected to a real person who could answer my questions about my claim.

just apply online its way easier than calling anyway. the website works fine most of the time

•Good point, I'll try the website first before calling anywhere.

Make sure you have all your employment information ready when you apply - dates of employment, employer addresses, reason for separation, etc. Washington ESD will ask for specific details about your last 18 months of work history.

•I have most of that but I'll need to look up some exact dates. Should I wait until I have everything perfect or just start with what I have?

Ava Williams
•Start with what you have - you can always provide additional information later if needed. Better to get your claim date established.

•Yeah don't wait for perfection, just get it filed. I spent too much time gathering paperwork and missed filing sooner.

Washington ESD is SO SLOW right now with processing claims. My friend applied 3 weeks ago and still hasn't heard anything back about approval. Be prepared to wait and keep filing those weekly claims even if you don't hear back right away.

•Oh no, 3 weeks? That's going to be rough financially. I guess I better apply today then.

•The system is definitely backed up but most claims do get processed eventually. Just stay on top of your weekly filings.

One thing to remember - your claim is backdated to when you first became unemployed, not when you apply. So if you lost your job Monday but don't apply until Friday, your claim still starts Monday. But there's no reason to wait!

•That's good to know! So I won't lose money by applying today instead of yesterday?

Raj Gupta
•Exactly right - as long as you apply within a reasonable timeframe, you're covered.

Zainab Mahmoud
•Ugh that sounds awful. Did you lose your information when it crashed?

Also worth mentioning - if your employer contests your claim, there might be an adjudication process that takes longer. Don't panic if that happens, just keep filing your weekly claims and wait for Washington ESD to make their determination.

•What would they contest it for? I was laid off due to downsizing, not fired for cause.

•Layoffs usually aren't contested, but some employers automatically contest all claims. If it happens, you'll get notice and can provide your side of the story.

•My employer contested mine even though it was a clear layoff situation. Took 6 weeks to resolve but I eventually got all my back pay.

Pro tip: start looking for work immediately even before your claim is approved. Washington ESD has job search requirements that kick in pretty quickly, and you want to be ahead of the game on documenting your search activities.

•Good point! I should probably sign up for WorkSource too right?

•Yes! Register with WorkSourceWA as part of your initial steps. It's required and helps with the job search documentation.

I waited 2 weeks to apply because I thought maybe my company would call me back. Big mistake - those were 2 weeks of benefits I never got back. Apply right away even if you think the layoff might be temporary.

•Yeah I was kind of hoping the same thing but you're right, better safe than sorry.

•Exactly! You can always stop claiming if you get called back to work, but you can't get those lost weeks back.

If you do have trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone later on, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really was a game changer for me. Worth checking out if you get stuck in phone hell trying to get answers about your claim status.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•I'd rather pay a little to actually talk to someone than waste entire days calling and getting nowhere. Check their site for details.

washington esd is the worst bureaucracy ever created. good luck getting through their system without wanting to pull your hair out. but yeah apply asap because the longer you wait the more painful it gets

•Well that's encouraging... 😅 Hopefully it won't be too bad.

•It's not as bad as some people make it out to be. Yes there are delays but most people do get their benefits eventually.

Quick question - do you have to apply during business hours or can you do it anytime online?
0 coins
Ava Williams
•Online application is available 24/7, which is one of the few convenient things about the system!

Zainab Mahmoud
•That's what I was hoping - I can apply tonight after I get all my paperwork together.

Make sure you understand the difference between your initial claim and your weekly claims. The initial claim is what you're doing now - establishing that you're unemployed and eligible. Then every week after that you file a weekly claim to actually get paid for that week.

Zainab Mahmoud
•So I file the big application once, then smaller weekly ones every week after?
0 coins
Eduardo Silva
•Exactly! The weekly ones are much shorter - just confirming you're still unemployed and looking for work.

Been through this process twice unfortunately. File today, don't wait. Set up your SecureAccess Washington account if you don't have one already. And definitely start documenting job search activities from day one even if benefits haven't kicked in yet.

•Thanks for the comprehensive advice! Sounds like everyone agrees - file immediately and start job searching right away.

•That's the best approach. Stay proactive on both the benefits side and the job search side.

One more thing about that Claimyr service - if you end up needing to call Washington ESD for any reason (claim issues, questions about eligibility, etc.), it's way better than spending hours on hold. Just something to keep in mind if you hit roadblocks.

•I might need to look into that. I've heard horror stories about trying to reach ESD by phone.

•I'll bookmark it just in case. Hopefully the online application goes smoothly though!

Bottom line: Apply today. File weekly claims every week. Start job searching immediately. Don't overthink it - just get the process started and you can figure out the details as you go.
