Should I file for unemployment right away - Washington ESD timing questions?
Got laid off yesterday and I'm wondering if I should file for unemployment benefits immediately or wait a few days? I've heard conflicting advice about timing with Washington ESD. Some people say file right away, others say wait until you're sure you won't find work quickly. I'm honestly not sure what the best approach is. Does it make a difference when you file your initial claim? Also worried about messing something up if I rush into it.

File immediately! There's a one-week waiting period in Washington state, so the sooner you file the sooner that week starts counting down. Your benefit year starts when you file, not when you became unemployed.

•Thanks, I didn't know about the waiting period. So even if I find a job next week, filing now doesn't hurt?

•Exactly. You can always stop filing weekly claims if you find work. But you can't get benefits retroactively for weeks you didn't file.

definitely file asap, the system is slow enough as it is without adding extra delays

•Good point about the system being slow. How long did it take for your claim to get approved?

•took about 2 weeks but that was pretty fast compared to some people

I made the mistake of waiting two weeks to file thinking I'd find something quickly. Big mistake - lost out on those weeks of benefits even though I was unemployed the whole time. Washington ESD won't backdate your claim to when you lost your job, only to when you filed.

•Wait, they really won't backdate at all? That seems unfair if you didn't know the rules.

•Nope, very strict about it. The benefit year starts when you file your initial claim, period. That's why everyone says file immediately.

•There are some exceptions for good cause but they're really rare and hard to prove. Better to just file right away.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to file or check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Interesting, how does that work exactly? Do they call for you or something?

•They basically handle the calling and waiting part so you don't have to spend all day redialing. Pretty straightforward to use.

•I've heard mixed things about those services. Did they actually help you resolve your issue?

•Yeah, got through to an agent same day and got my adjudication issue sorted out. Worth it for me since I was getting nowhere on my own.

FILE NOW!!! I cannot stress this enough. The Washington ESD system is already overwhelmed and every day you wait is money you're losing. Even if you think you might find work soon, file anyway. You can always cancel if you don't need it.

•Okay you've convinced me, filing today. Do I need all my employment history ready or can I add details later?

Paolo Romano
•You'll need your last employer's info and your SSN to start. Have your W2 or pay stubs handy but you can always add more details later if needed.

Just be prepared for the website to be slow or crash. I tried filing on a Monday morning and it took me three tries to get through the whole application.

•Ugh that sounds frustrating. Any tips for getting through the application smoothly?

•Try early morning or late evening when fewer people are online. And save your progress frequently if the site gives you that option.

•Also make sure you have a stable internet connection. Nothing worse than losing all your info halfway through.

I waited 5 days to file because I was embarrassed about being unemployed. Stupidest decision ever - lost a whole week of benefits that I really needed. Don't let pride cost you money.

•I totally get that feeling but you paid into this system through your paychecks. It's your money, not charity.

•You're absolutely right. I wish someone had told me that at the time.

Question - if I file right away but then get called back to work within a few days, do I have to pay anything back to Washington ESD?
0 coins
Ava Thompson
•No, if you haven't received any benefit payments yet there's nothing to pay back. You just stop filing weekly claims.

Javier Torres
•Perfect, that makes me feel better about filing immediately.

The whole system is a joke anyway. I filed immediately and still waited 6 weeks for my first payment. But yeah, definitely file right away because waiting just makes it worse.

•6 weeks?? That's insane. Did you have any issues with your claim or was it just normal processing time?

Emma Wilson
•Normal processing apparently. They said they were backlogged. At least I eventually got all the back pay.

•That's exactly why services like Claimyr exist - to help people get through to actual humans when the system is backed up.

Pro tip: file your claim online at secure.esd.wa.gov rather than trying to call. The phone lines are usually jammed but the website works most of the time.

•Good to know, I was going to try calling first. Online it is!

•Way faster and you can do it anytime. Just make sure you have all your employer info ready before you start.

I keep seeing people mention Claimyr in these threads. Is it legit? Seems too good to be true that they can actually get you through to Washington ESD agents.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me. Check out their demo video if you want to see how it works before trying it.

•My sister used it last month and got through to an agent the same day. She'd been trying on her own for weeks with no luck.

•Huh, might be worth looking into if I run into problems with my claim.

Whatever you do, don't wait. I know someone who waited two months thinking unemployment was 'giving up' and by the time they filed they were in serious financial trouble. File today!

•Two months?! That's crazy. Yeah, I'm definitely filing this afternoon.

•That mindset is so common but so wrong. Unemployment insurance is exactly that - insurance you've been paying for.

Also remember you have to do job search activities even while your claim is being processed, so start keeping track of where you apply from day one.

•How many job applications do I need to do per week?
0 coins
ShadowHunter
•It's 3 job search activities per week in Washington. Can be applications, interviews, networking events, etc. Keep good records.

•And register with WorkSourceWA if you haven't already. That's a requirement too.

Filed mine 3 days after being laid off and regretted waiting even that long. Every single person I talked to at Washington ESD said the same thing - file immediately. There's literally no downside to filing early.

•That seems to be the universal advice. Thanks everyone, really helpful thread!
