Washington ESD - how to get more unemployment money if my benefits seem low?
My weekly benefit amount from Washington ESD seems really low compared to what I was making. I'm only getting $362 a week but I was making $55k annually at my last job. Is there a way to get more unemployment money or appeal the benefit calculation? I've been looking at my monetary determination letter but can't figure out why it's so low. Has anyone successfully gotten their weekly benefit amount increased?

Your weekly benefit amount is calculated based on your highest earning quarter from your base period. Washington ESD uses a specific formula - it's not just your annual salary divided by 52. Check your monetary determination letter to see which quarters they used for the calculation.

•I looked at it but the math doesn't seem right to me. My highest quarter was definitely higher than what they're showing.

•You can request a redetermination if you think there's an error in your wage records. You'll need to provide pay stubs or W-2s as proof.

had the same problem last year, turns out some of my wages weren't reported correctly by my employer. took months to fix

•How did you get it fixed? Did you have to contact Washington ESD directly?

•yeah had to call them like 50 times, kept getting disconnected

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $999 for 2025, but that's only if you were earning around $70k+ annually. If you were making $55k, your benefit should be higher than $362 though. There might be missing wages in your record. You should definitely appeal this - you have 30 days from your monetary determination date.

•Good to know about the 30 day deadline. I got my determination about 2 weeks ago so I still have time.

•I used claimyr.com to get through to Washington ESD when I had wage record issues. They have this calling service that actually got me connected to an agent who could look at my case. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!! I was making $48k and they gave me like $280 a week. Turns out my previous employer didn't report my last 3 months of wages correctly. Took forever to get Washington ESD to fix it but I eventually got back pay for the difference.

•How much back pay did you get? Was it worth the hassle?

•Got about $1,800 in back pay once they corrected my wages. Definitely worth it but was a pain to deal with.

•Did you have to provide documentation or did Washington ESD contact your employer directly?

Check if you had any employers during your base period that might not have reported wages. Sometimes if you worked multiple jobs or had a job change, wages can get missed in the system.

•I did have two different employers during that time period. One was a contract position that ended in March.

•Contract work sometimes gets reported differently. Make sure both employers' wages are included in your monetary determination.

just went through this whole mess myself. you need to file a petition for redetermination. i had to send in all my pay stubs and tax documents. took like 6 weeks but they increased my weekly amount by $180

•Where do you file the petition? Is it through the Washington ESD website?

AstroAdventurer
•yeah its on their website under appeals section. make sure you keep copies of everything you send

Important: You can't just 'get more money' beyond what your wages qualify you for. The system is designed to replace about 50% of your average weekly wage up to the maximum. But if there are wage reporting errors, you absolutely should get those corrected.

•Exactly this. A lot of people think they can somehow increase their benefits beyond what they qualify for, but that's not how unemployment works.

•I understand that, I just think my calculation is wrong based on what I actually earned.

Washington ESD phone lines are impossible to get through to. I tried for weeks before someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and connects you when they get an agent on the line. Worked great for me when I had benefit calculation issues.

•How much does that cost? Seems like something Washington ESD should fix themselves.

•Yeah they should, but when you need to actually talk to someone it's worth it. Much better than spending hours calling and getting hung up on.

Make sure you're looking at the right base period. Washington ESD uses the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. If you filed in January 2025, they're looking at wages from Q1 2024 through Q4 2024, not your most recent wages from Q4 2024.

•That might be part of the issue. I got a big raise in October but that wouldn't be included then.

Giovanni Conti
•Exactly. Recent raises don't count toward your current claim. You can request to use alternate base period if it would give you higher benefits.

honestly the whole system is messed up. i know people making way less than me getting more benefits somehow

•It depends on their wage history during the base period, not their current salary.

•still seems unfair

If you do file for redetermination, make sure you include ALL documentation. Pay stubs, W-2s, 1099s if you had contract work, and any employment records. Washington ESD will need proof of the wages you're claiming were missed.

•I have most of my pay stubs saved digitally. Should I send physical copies or can I upload them?

CosmicCrusader
•Digital uploads through their secure message system work fine. Just make sure the images are clear and readable.

Had wage issues too and used that claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Got connected to Washington ESD within like 20 minutes instead of calling for days. The agent was able to see exactly what wages were missing from my record and told me what documentation to send.

•That sounds way better than what I've been dealing with. Might have to try that.

•Is it legit though? Seems too good to be true for Washington ESD calls.

Dylan Campbell
•Yeah it's real. They basically just handle the calling and waiting part for you. Still talk to actual Washington ESD agents.

Check your online account to see the wage breakdown by quarter. If any quarter shows $0 or way lower than expected, that's where the problem is.

•Just checked and Q2 2024 shows way lower than it should. That was when I changed jobs.

•Job changes often cause wage reporting delays. Your new employer might not have reported those wages yet.

•Good point. I'll get my documents together this week and file the petition.

One more thing - if Washington ESD approves your redetermination and increases your weekly benefit amount, you'll get back pay for all the weeks you already claimed at the lower rate. So it's definitely worth pursuing if you believe there's an error.

Aisha Rahman
•That's great to know! I've already claimed about 6 weeks so the back pay could be significant.

•Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims while the redetermination is processing. Don't want to miss any weeks.

good luck with this. washington esd moves slow but they do eventually fix wage errors if you have the documentation
