My husband's ESD claim got paid before mine - why am I failing at my own advice?

So this is actually pretty embarrassing but maybe someone will get a laugh out of this. I've been in this ESD forum group for months now and thought I was some kind of expert on unemployment claims. When my husband lost his job last month (construction slowdown), I was all confident showing him exactly how to file his UI claim. I was literally quoting advice I've seen here - "make sure to report your hours exactly this way" and "answer the able and available questions like this" and "don't forget to complete all 3 job search activities before Sunday." Fast forward to this morning - he checks his account and BOOM! $867 payment processed! Meanwhile, I check mine (laid off from admin position 3 weeks ago) and nothing. Still says "pending - issue on claim." So I'm sitting here like... am I seriously not following my own advice that I've been preaching to him?? 🤦‍♀️ Anyone else ever become the unemployment "expert" only to mess up their own claim? Please tell me I'm not alone in this irony!

That's actually pretty funny! But different industries and job types can trigger different review processes. Construction work has very standardized separation reasons that ESD processes quickly, while administrative positions often have more complex eligibility factors they need to verify. Your claim probably hit an identity verification or separation reason that needs manual review while his sailed through the automated system. It doesn't necessarily mean you did anything wrong on your application.

Thanks for not making me feel completely stupid! 😅 That makes sense about different industries. He was definitely a clear layoff case due to seasonal work. Mine might be getting more scrutiny because my employer listed "position elimination" rather than "layoff" on the paperwork. Still frustrating when I thought I knew exactly what I was doing!

lmaooo this happened with me and my roommate too!!! i was all "i got u bro, i know how this works" and then his claim went through in like 4 days and mine took 6 weeks. esd is weird like that sometimes, its like they flip a coin to decide who gets paid fast

It's definitely not a coin flip. ESD has specific algorithms that flag certain claims for review based on your work history, how you answer questions, and what your employer reports. If your separation reason doesn't match what your employer reported, or if your ID verification doesn't immediately clear, or if your base year wages have multiple employers - those all trigger reviews that delay payment. The system is frustrating but actually follows consistent patterns.

This is a perfect example of why unemployment is so frustrating! I've been helping friends with their claims for years, and sometimes there's just no rhyme or reason to why one claim sails through and another gets stuck in limbo. Have you checked your ESD account to see if there's any specific issue flagged? Look under "Notices/Letters" and "Decision Status" tabs - sometimes there's a specific hold reason listed that you need to address.

I checked the Decision Status tab and it says "Adjudication In Progress" with a note about "Employment Separation" - so I guess they're checking with my former employer? But it's been 3 weeks already! Meanwhile my husband keeps teasing me about being an "unemployment expert" 🙄

oh man adjudication can take FOREVER my claim was stuck there for like 2 months last year. its the worst part of the whole esd system imo

Adjudication is currently taking 4-6 weeks on average according to what I've been hearing from others. The main problem is that once your claim goes to adjudication, it just sits in a queue until an adjudicator can review it. When I was stuck in adjudication last year, I finally got through to an ESD agent using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they have a service that helps you connect with ESD without waiting on hold for hours. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent couldn't speed up my adjudication but at least explained what was happening and made a note on my account that I had called in about it.

THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME AND MY SISTER!!! I was all "let me show you how it's done" and then her claim went through in a week while mine got stuck for over a month. ESD hates me I swear. Eventually found out it was because I had worked for 2 different employers in my base year and they were verifying both employment records. So annoying!!!!

Omg that makes me feel better that I'm not alone! And now that you mention it, I did have two employers in my base year (switched jobs last summer). That might be exactly what's happening. My husband only had the one construction company for the past 2 years. Mystery solved maybe?

While this situation is amusing, it highlights an important aspect of the unemployment system that many people don't realize: each claim is uniquely evaluated based on multiple factors. The timing of payments depends on: 1. Your work history and number of employers in your base year 2. The reason for separation as reported by both you and your employer 3. Whether your identity verification cleared automatically 4. Whether any answers triggered automated flags in the system 5. Current ESD workload and staffing levels Your husband's claim likely had none of these complications, while yours might have one or more. It doesn't mean you gave bad advice - the core process is the same, but individual circumstances affect processing time.

Thank you for breaking it down like that. I definitely have factors 1 and possibly 2 affecting my claim. I reported "layoff" but my separation letter said "position elimination due to reorganization" - so maybe that created a mismatch? I appreciate the detailed explanation - makes me feel less like I completely failed at following my own advice!

so r u gonna tell ur husband u need help from him now with ur claim??? 😂😂😂 the student becomes the master lolololol

Absolutely NOT! 🤣 His ego is already too big about this whole thing. I'd rather sit on hold with ESD for 8 hours than admit I need his help hahaha

Since your claim is in adjudication for separation issues, there are a few things you can do: 1. Call ESD to check if they need any additional documentation from you. Getting through can be difficult, but services like Claimyr (claimyr.com) can help connect you to an agent without the long hold times. Their video demo explains how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 2. Continue filing your weekly claims during adjudication so you'll receive all eligible payments once approved 3. Check your ESD online account daily for any new correspondence requiring response 4. Make sure you're completing and documenting all required job search activities each week I went through something similar - my husband's claim was approved quickly while mine took 5 weeks due to separation verification. It's frustrating but common.

Thank you for the practical advice! I'll check out that service - calling ESD has been impossible. I've tried at different times of day and always get the "high call volume" message. And yes, I've definitely been doing my weekly claims and job search activities religiously. Don't want to miss out on any payments once this finally gets resolved!

i did this with my boyfriend's claim and guess what? i got disqualified for quitting my job (which i didn't, they eliminated my position!) and he got approved right away. took me filing an appeal and waiting 10 weeks to get it fixed. sometimes i think they just randomly pick people to torture with the system.

It's not random. Position elimination vs. quitting is a very different situation in ESD's system. When an employer reports that an employee quit (even incorrectly), it automatically triggers adjudication since voluntary quits are generally not eligible for benefits. You had to appeal because there was a factual dispute that needed resolution. The system follows specific rules, even though it seems arbitrary when you're caught in it.
