Mid-career accountant struggling to find work after a month on ESD unemployment - feeling discouraged
Never in my professional life did I think I'd be in this position. I have a CPA, 27 years of accounting experience, and until last month, I've always landed on my feet quickly after job changes. The last time I was unemployed was briefly in 2009 during the recession, but even then I found work within two weeks! Now I'm a month into collecting unemployment benefits and I've had zero promising leads despite applying to 25+ positions. I'm meeting all my job search requirements for ESD (logging 3+ activities weekly), but the silence from employers is deafening. Is the job market really this terrible for experienced accountants right now? Has anyone else in a professional field with decades of experience struggled this much recently? I'm starting to wonder if my age is working against me (I'm 52). Feeling really discouraged and questioning my worth after being so employable for nearly three decades.

•That's both comforting and terrifying to hear I'm not alone. Are you mostly applying online or using other methods? I'm wondering if I need to change my approach.

I think it's your age, tbh. I was a hiring manager before getting laid off myself and companies are looking for younger workers they can pay less. They see 27 years experience and automatically think you'll want too much $$$. Try removing graduation dates from resume and only listing last 15 years of experience!

•This advice might help for interviews but is TERRIBLE for your ESD claim!! If you misrepresent your work history and ESD finds out during cross-matching with employer records, they'll hit you with an OVERPAYMENT and possible fraud penalties!!! Be honest on all ESD forms while maybe adjusting your resume for applications.

I work in career services and can offer some perspective. The accounting industry has changed significantly since 2020. Many companies now use automated applicant tracking systems that screen resumes before human eyes ever see them. Your extensive experience could actually be working against you in these automated systems, as they're often programmed to look for specific keywords rather than evaluating actual experience. A few suggestions: 1. Modernize your resume with current industry keywords (look at job postings for clues) 2. Highlight any experience with modern accounting software and systems 3. Consider reaching out to accounting-specific staffing agencies 4. Network with former colleagues who might know of unadvertised positions Keep meeting your ESD job search requirements while broadening your approach. This challenging period doesn't diminish your impressive career accomplishments.

•Thank you for these specific suggestions. I've been focusing mostly on job boards and company websites. I'll reach out to my network and update my resume with current keywords. Do you think temporary accounting positions are worth considering, or would that potentially hurt my chances at permanent roles?

When I was struggling to find work last year, I actually called ESD directly to ask if they had any resources for professional job seekers. The career counselor I spoke with was really helpful and connected me with some industry-specific job fairs. The problem was getting through to an actual person at ESD - took me DAYS of calling. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent within about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it because the ESD WorkSource resources actually helped me land interviews in my field (marketing). Don't give up - the job market is tough right now but your experience is valuable!

•Wait you actually got useful career help from ESD?? All they ever did for me was send generic links to Indeed and tell me to check WorkSource. Did you talk to someone specific or just the regular unemployment people?

•I specifically asked to be transferred to someone who could help with professional job searching. The regular agents aren't career counselors, but they can connect you with the right department. You have to be super specific about what you need.

you should look into if you qualify for the Self Employment Assistance Program thru ESD!!!! with ur experience u could probably do freelance accounting or consulting while getting benefits. they let you work on starting ur own biz instead of the regular job search requirements. my friend did it and makes WAY more now working for herself!!!

•This is a good suggestion, but there are important details to understand about SEAP: 1. It's a competitive program with limited spots 2. You need to qualify for regular UI benefits and have a viable business idea 3. You must complete entrepreneurial training 4. You'll need to submit a business plan for approval It can be an excellent option for someone with specialized skills like accounting, but it does require careful planning. If interested, you should contact ESD specifically about SEAP eligibility. The program allows you to work full-time on your business while collecting benefits, without the usual job search requirements.

•I hadn't even considered this option! I do have a few former clients who have asked if I'd consider consulting. I'll definitely look into the SEAP program requirements. Thank you for this suggestion!

DONT FORGET that after 4 weeks on unemployment you're required to register with WorkSource and expand your job search to include positions that might pay 80% of your previous wage or be outside your exact job title. ESD will check this and can deny benefits if you're being too picky about only applying to senior accounting roles. Just something to watch out for as you hit the one-month mark.

•This is not completely accurate. The "suitable work" requirements do change after you've been on unemployment for longer periods, but there's no automatic requirement to take an 80% pay cut at exactly 4 weeks. ESD evaluates suitable work based on your skills, experience, training, and labor market conditions. Always best to check with ESD directly about your specific situation rather than following general advice from forums.

Have you had someone review your resume? I'm a recruiter (now on unemployment myself lol) and the resume formats that worked even 5 years ago are getting filtered out by ATS systems now. Happy to take a quick look if you want to DM me - no charge, just paying it forward while I have the time.

•That's incredibly kind of you. I'll send you a DM with my resume. It's probably been about 3 years since I last updated the format. Thank you!

•Just looked at what you sent - right away I can see some formatting issues that might be causing ATS problems. Will send detailed feedback tomorrow. And please update us if you land something - helps give the rest of us hope!

anybody else notice that ESD seems to be checking job search logs more carefully lately??? my friend got audited and had to provide proof of all her applications from the past 8 weeks or they were gonna cut her benefits!!

•Yes, ESD has increased job search verification in 2025. They're now randomly selecting approximately 15% of claimants for detailed job search reviews. This is why it's crucial to maintain thorough records of all job search activities - save confirmation emails from applications, take screenshots of submitted applications, and keep detailed notes of networking conversations. The job search log in your ESD account should be treated as an official document.

UPDATE: I wanted to thank everyone for the advice and support. I've implemented several suggestions - updated my resume with current keywords, reached out to my network, and called ESD about additional resources (using Claimyr really did help bypass the phone nightmare). I've got two promising interviews next week, one from a former colleague's referral. I'm also researching the SEAP program as a potential option. Will let you all know how things progress, but I'm feeling much more optimistic now. This community has been incredibly helpful during a really tough time.
