Why is youth unemployment so high in NYS - struggling to find work at 22

I'm 22 and graduated college last spring but I've been unemployed for 8 months now. All my friends are having the same problem finding entry-level jobs. I finally qualified for NYS Department of Labor unemployment benefits but even the job search requirements feel impossible when there's literally nothing available for people without experience. My case worker keeps telling me to apply to retail but those places want 'experienced' cashiers now. Why is youth unemployment so ridiculously high? Is this normal or just a terrible time to be starting out? My weekly claims are going through but I'm worried about the 26-week limit approaching.

Youth unemployment has always been higher than general unemployment rates, but you're right that it's particularly challenging right now. Entry-level positions often require 2-3 years experience which creates a catch-22. For your NYS Department of Labor job search requirements, focus on documenting every application even if the posting seems like a long shot. The system counts quantity of applications, not just quality matches. Consider temporary agencies - they often lead to permanent positions and satisfy your work search requirements.

That's helpful about temp agencies! I didn't realize those applications would count toward my job search log. Do you know if NYS Department of Labor has any specific programs for recent graduates?

same boat here, been looking for 6 months since graduating. the job market is absolutely brutal for anyone under 25. even unpaid internships want experience now its insane

Have you tried reaching out to your college's career services? Many schools have alumni networks that can help with job placement even after graduation. Also check if your school has partnerships with local employers.

I had the same frustrating experience last year. Couldn't get through to NYS Department of Labor agents to ask about training programs or if there were any youth-specific resources. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Finally used claimyr.com after seeing their demo video (https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI) and actually got connected to speak with someone about apprenticeship programs I didn't even know existed. They had way more options for young people than what's obvious on the website.

Wow I had no idea there were apprenticeship programs through NYS Department of Labor! I'll definitely check that out. Did they mention anything about how those programs affect your unemployment benefits?

Yes, most approved training programs actually extend your benefit period and you don't have to do the regular job search requirements while enrolled. Definitely worth asking about when you call.

THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED AGAINST YOUNG PEOPLE! They want us to have experience but won't give us a chance to GET experience. Meanwhile older workers are taking entry level jobs because they can't find anything in their field. It's a complete mess and NYS Department of Labor just treats everyone the same regardless of age or circumstances.

I hear your frustration but there are actually some age-specific programs available. The WIOA youth program goes up to age 24 and can provide job training and support services.
