Why is unemployment so high in NY - NYS Department of Labor claim taking forever

I've been out of work for 6 months now and it feels like everyone I know is struggling to find jobs. Filed my NYS Department of Labor claim back in October and while I'm getting benefits, the job market seems absolutely terrible. I'm doing my required job searches through the system but most postings are either scams or want 5+ years experience for entry level positions. Anyone else noticing unemployment staying really high despite what the news says? Starting to wonder if there's something wrong with the job market or if it's just me.

The unemployment rate in NY has been fluctuating but there are definitely structural issues in the job market right now. Many companies are being more selective with hiring, requiring more qualifications for the same roles that used to hire with less experience. Your NYS Department of Labor job search requirements should be helping you track the market - are you seeing consistent patterns in the types of rejections you're getting?

Yeah most rejections are either no response at all or they say I don't have enough experience. Even for jobs that seem entry level they want 3-5 years minimum.

same here! been on unemployment since last summer and the job market is BRUTAL. feels like companies are just posting jobs but not actually hiring anyone. my job search log for NYS Department of Labor is full of applications with zero responses

I had similar frustrations when I was on UI last year. What helped me was expanding my search beyond the obvious job boards. The NYS Department of Labor workforce development centers often have connections to employers who are actually hiring, not just posting ghost jobs. Also make sure you're meeting your job search requirements properly - sometimes focusing on quality applications rather than just hitting the minimum number helps.

This is good advice. I was spinning my wheels applying to everything until I started being more strategic about it.

The whole system is messed up right now. Companies want unicorn candidates for basic jobs and pay nothing. Meanwhile NYS Department of Labor keeps asking me to prove I'm job searching when there ARE NO REAL JOBS. It's all just HR departments collecting resumes they'll never look at.

I get the frustration but there are legitimate opportunities out there. It's just much more competitive than it used to be. Have you tried reaching out to recruiters in your field?

Had to deal with something similar when my claim got stuck in adjudication and I couldn't get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor for weeks. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

Interesting, I might need to check that out if I run into issues with my weekly claims. Getting through to NYS Department of Labor is impossible most days.

honestly think a lot of it is just the economy adjusting after all the craziness of the past few years. companies got used to having their pick of desperate workers and now they're being super picky
