How to know if I'm eligible for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I just got laid off from my retail job after working there for 8 months and I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've never filed for UI before and honestly don't know where to start or what the requirements are. I worked full-time making $16/hour but I'm not sure if that's enough or if there are other things I need to meet. Can someone explain how to determine if you're eligible? I don't want to go through the whole application process if I'm not going to qualify.

The basic eligibility requirements for Washington ESD unemployment are: you must have earned at least $3,850 in your base period, be unemployed through no fault of your own, be able and available to work, and actively seek work. Since you worked full-time for 8 months at $16/hour, you should easily meet the wage requirement.

•What exactly is the base period? Is that just the time I worked at my last job?

Maya Lewis
•No, the base period is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim. So it includes wages from multiple jobs if you had them, not just your most recent one.

You should definitely apply! At $16/hour full-time for 8 months you'll qualify. The Washington ESD eligibility calculator on their website can give you an estimate of your weekly benefit amount too. Just make sure you were laid off and didn't quit or get fired for misconduct.

•Yeah I was laid off due to budget cuts, so that should be fine. Where do I find the eligibility calculator?

•It's on the Washington ESD website under the unemployment benefits section. You'll need your wage information from the past 18 months.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your eligibility or get help with your application, you might want to try Claimyr. It's a service that helps people get connected to ESD agents without sitting on hold forever. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

•Yeah I used it last month when I couldn't get through the regular phone lines. Saved me hours of calling.

wait do you have to have worked for a certain amount of time?? i only worked 3 months at my last job before getting laid off

•It's not about how long you worked at one job, it's about your total earnings in the base period. You could have worked multiple jobs - they look at all your covered wages.

•oh ok that makes more sense. i had another job before this one so maybe that counts

Another question - do they check if you're actually looking for work? Like how do they verify that?

•Yes, you have to keep a job search log and make at least 3 job search activities per week. They can audit you and ask for proof of your job search activities.

•The job search thing is such a pain. I spend more time documenting my searches than actually searching sometimes.

I've been on unemployment for 2 months now and the process isn't too bad once you get started. The hardest part was the initial application and waiting for it to get approved. Make sure you have all your employment history ready when you apply.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved?

•Mine took about 3 weeks but I didn't have any complications. Some people get stuck in adjudication longer if there are issues with their claim.

The Washington ESD website has a good breakdown of all the eligibility requirements. Just go to esd.wa.gov and look under unemployment benefits. They explain everything including the monetary and non-monetary requirements.

•Thanks, I'll check that out. Hopefully it's not too confusing.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any separation from work that wasn't a layoff, they'll investigate that during adjudication. Even if your most recent job was a layoff, they look at all separations in your base period.

•What if I quit a job like 6 months ago but got laid off from my recent job?

•They'll still look at why you quit the earlier job. If you quit without good cause, it could affect your eligibility. But if your recent layoff provides enough wages to qualify, you might be okay.

UGH the Washington ESD phone system is THE WORST. I've been trying to get someone on the phone for WEEKS to ask about my eligibility and I either get disconnected or the line is busy. It's so frustrating when you just need a simple answer!

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. They cut through all that phone system nonsense and get you connected to an actual agent.

•Might have to try that. I'm desperate at this point.

Don't overthink it too much. If you worked and earned wages in Washington, got laid off, and can work, you probably qualify. The worst thing that happens is they say no and you're in the same position you're in now.

•That's true. I guess I'm just worried about wasting time on the application.

Just to add - you also need to be a US citizen or have work authorization, and you need to register with WorkSource within 4 weeks of filing your claim unless you're union or have a specific return-to-work date.

•What's WorkSource? Is that different from Washington ESD?

Isaac Wright
•WorkSource is the state's job search and career services system. It's connected to ESD but it's where you'll do most of your job searching and career planning activities.

i applied last week and still haven't heard anything back. is that normal?? starting to worry they lost my application or something

•It's normal for the initial processing to take 1-2 weeks. You should get a determination letter telling you if you're approved or denied.

•ok good. was getting worried for nothing i guess

The eligibility rules are pretty straightforward but the system itself is confusing. I had to call multiple times just to understand what documents I needed to upload. Pro tip: keep copies of everything you submit.

•What kind of documents do you need besides your employment history?

Madison King
•Depends on your situation. I needed my separation notice from my employer and some identity verification documents.

Been through this process twice now. The key things are: earned enough wages (which you did), unemployed through no fault of your own (layoff counts), able to work, available for work, and actively seeking work. You sound like you meet all the criteria.

•Thanks, that helps. I feel more confident about applying now.

If you do apply and run into issues or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, I had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Way better than trying to call the regular number and getting hung up on constantly.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•It's worth it when you consider how much time you save not sitting on hold for hours. Check their website for details.

Make sure you apply soon after your layoff. There's no waiting period to apply and benefits are retroactive to when you file, not when you were laid off.

•Good point. I was laid off 3 days ago so I should probably get on this soon.

The system will calculate your benefit amount automatically based on your wages once you're approved. At $16/hour full-time you should get a decent weekly amount, probably around $400-500 depending on your exact earnings.

•That would definitely help with bills while I'm looking for another job. Thanks for the estimate.

Don't let the application intimidate you. It's mostly just entering your work history and contact information. The hardest part is gathering all your employment dates and wages, but if you have old pay stubs or tax documents it's not too bad.

•I think I have most of that information. I'll start putting it together tonight.

One last thing - even if you're not 100% sure about your eligibility, it's worth applying. The worst they can do is deny you, and then you'll know for sure. Plus if you wait too long you might miss out on benefits you could have gotten.

•You're right. I'm going to apply this weekend. Thanks everyone for all the help and advice!
